On 21st May 2026, the German Federal Parliament approved three railway projects in northern, southern and eastern Germany submitted by DB InfraGO, thereby giving the go-ahead for further planning. The approvals relate to the planned new cross-border line between Dresden and Prague, featuring a tunnel around 30 km in length through the Ore Mountains, the upgrade of the Niebüll – Westerland line on Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the new line between Augsburg and Ulm. The cost of the link to Prague is estimated at EUR 5.6 billion, and construction is scheduled to begin at the end of 2032, with completion in 2044. The project on Sylt involves the double-track expansion of the line between Niebüll and Klanxbüll and between Morsum and Tinnum and is estimated to cost EUR 426 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2032, with completion planned for autumn 2039. Just under EUR 8.2 billion has been budgeted for the new high-speed rail (HSR) line between Augsburg and Ulm with speeds of up to 300 km/h.
