Hynamics, a 100% subsidiary of EDF Group specialising in hydrogen, and EDF Renewables UK have been successful in being shortlisted for the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) for phase two of their Tees Green Hydrogen project.
This is the second time the project has received backing from government, with phase one of Tees Green Hydrogen awarded in Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) in 2023.
Tees Green Hydrogen is a pioneering project that will use electricity from low carbon sources to produce electrolytic renewable hydrogen. This hydrogen will then be supplied to local industry to support decarbonisation efforts, leading to a significant reduction in industrial pollution.
Phase two of Tees Green Hydrogen will see a 100MW electrolyser developed adjacent to the 8MW phase one electrolyser. This phased approach will enable the project to scale in-line with demand from industry for hydrogen.
Pierre de RAPHELIS-SOISSAN, CEO of Hynamics UK, said: “This long-awaited announcement is great news for Hynamics UK. It confirms the soundness of this project, which will help decarbonise local industries of the Tees Valley. Using hydrogen produced by electrolysis using electricity from EDF Group assets we will build a virtuous ecosystem that will benefit the area. We are grateful for the government’s confidence in this technology of the future.”
Jon O’SULLIVAN, Director of Onshore Wind and Hydrogen at EDF Renewables UK, said: “This is another great sign of confidence from the government in our pioneering Tees Green Hydrogen project and a step towards our ambitious plan to increase our investment in the Tees Valley.
We are grateful for the continued support we have received from local businesses and wider stakeholders in the area. Once operational, the project will contribute positively to the decarbonisation of the Tees Valley, helping to secure its long-term sustainability and attract more high-quality jobs to the area too.”
With the positive shortlisting announcement, Hynamics and EDF Renewables UK will continue to work with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero during the due diligence phase. Progress on phase one of Tees Green Hydrogen continues to be made and more details on this will be released in due course.
