Sustainable infrastructure investor Actis has bought the complete stake in Stride Climate Investments, a solar generation asset portfolio in India, in a deal the value of which has not been disclosed.
The stake has been acquired from a fund managed by Macquarie Asset Management.

The acquisition includes Stride’s 371MW (414MWp) portfolio of operating solar photovoltaic (PV) assets, which are distributed across 21 projects in seven Indian states, the majority in the state of Gujarat.
The Stride portfolio features long-term pay-as-produced power purchase agreements.
The agreements are with a diversified pool of off-takers, including central and state governments and the country’s private sector.
Actis Long Life Infrastructure head and partner Adrian Mucalov stated: “The acquisition of Stride aligns nicely with Actis’ long life infrastructure investment approach. The business has a 10-year operating history, compelling cash generation and low existing leverage.
“We believe Stride offers strong prospects to deliver cash yields to investors while also being in a dynamic, rapidly growing market.”
Actis has invested more than $7.1bn in Asia, and has built or operated 8GW of installed capacity, including 5.5GW in renewables, in the region.
The acquisition marks Stride as Actis’ third energy generation platform in India, joining BluPine Energy and Athena Renewables.
Actis Energy Infrastructure partner Abhishek Bansal stated: “Actis has a long experience of successful investment in the Indian renewable energy sector, exemplified by Ostro Energy and Sprng Energy previously, as well as by our current renewables platforms.
“The Indian economy is continuing to grow rapidly, and its energy transition is accelerating apace, with the government aiming to secure 50% of the country’s electricity from renewables by 2030. This environment is therefore creating ample opportunities, especially for an investor such as Actis with expertise in driving efficiency and creating value in this market.”
In September 2024, Actis signed a strategic partnership with Meralco Powergen and its subsidiary Solar Philippines New Energy Corporation (SPNEC) to invest $600m in the Philippines’ Terra Solar project.
The agreement entails Actis acquiring a 40% equity stake in the project via the issuance of new shares by SPNEC.

China To Deploy 253 Gw Of Pv For Desert Control In Arid NorthChina has approved a new plan to tap its vast desert solar potential while addressing land degradation.
The Photovoltaic Desertification Control Plan (2025-30) – released by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and the National Energy Administration (NEA) – aims to install 253 GW of solar capacity and rehabilitate 1.66 million acres (673,670 hectares) of desertified land by 2030.
The initiative targets the “Three North” region – northern, northeastern, and northwestern China – which includes eight major deserts and four sandy regions spanning more than 100 million hectares. These areas receive some of China’s highest solar irradiation but face extreme ecological fragility, with limited water, sparse vegetation, and high wind erosion.
Authorities said solar deployment must follow “ecological priority and coordinated development.” The plan divides the region into three climate zones and five priority development areas, including the fringes of the Taklimakan and Tengger deserts. It calls for pilot projects that integrate solar with land rehabilitation and includes safeguards for site selection, construction, and operations to limit ecological impact.
While the economic advantages are clear – desert solar farms offer low land costs, high irradiation, and favorable electricity prices – the plan also targets reduced afforestation costs. Conventional tree-planting can cost up to CNY 12,000 ($1,650) per acre, while solar-linked approaches can lower that to CNY 1,800 to CNY 3,000, due to revenue from electricity generation.
Additional income could come from carbon credits, government subsidies for land restoration, and co-located agriculture or livestock. The Kubuqi project in Inner Mongolia, for example, combines 2 GW of solar with tomato and desert herb cultivation, generating over CNY 1 billion per year. Battery storage and hydrogen facilities further boost the projects’ economic and energy value.
Challenges remain. Grid infrastructure in remote areas is often inadequate to handle added generation, and some developers focus on capacity rather than ecological integration.
To address this, Beijing directed local governments to adopt integrated planning, involve farmers and communities, and encourage innovation. If successful, the plan could serve as a model for sustainable development in fragile environments.
As with other major infrastructure projects in China, the plan’s rollout will be guided by detailed actions under the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan. Large state-owned energy firms are expected to lead implementation, potentially providing strong support for China’s solar supply chain.

Commercial breakthrough demonstrates viability
Commercial activity accelerated dramatically, with 47 new wells announced in Q1 2025 – an 80% increase year-on-year. This rise was largely driven by the expansion of low-carbon heating initiatives in Europe. The United States and Turkey led the way, together accounting for nearly half of all planned wells. Fervo Energy's 500 MW Cape Station project in Utah demonstrates commercial viability at $79 per megawatt hour without subsidy, signaling the technology's competitive potential against traditional power sources.

"With $1.7 billion in Q1 2025 funding alone and projects like Fervo's 500 MW Cape Station demonstrating commercial viability at $79 per megawatt hour, we're witnessing the emergence of a technology that could provide 15% of global power by 2050 while addressing the critical need for baseload renewable energy."
Massive untapped potential awaits development
Currently supplying less than 1% of global energy needs, geothermal could provide 15% of worldwide power by 2050. The US leads global geothermal power production, yet its 4 GW of installed capacity leaves vast resources untapped. Total potential US geothermal capacity exceeds 500 GW, with the best sites in western states featuring temperatures above 150°C and heat flow rates exceeding 80 milliwatts per square metre.
Canada shows significant potential for geothermal power generation, mainly in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Yukon, plus Nova Scotia.
Investment confidence has strengthened significantly, with 41% of the sector's nearly $2 billion total investment raised in 2024 alone. Major partnerships have emerged, including Canadian Deep Earth Energy's collaboration with SLB on Canada's first next-generation project in Saskatchewan.
Under a net-zero scenario, Wood Mackenzie estimates these next generation technologies could account for 46% of total geothermal output by 2050.
Technology breakthrough addresses traditional barriers
Three breakthrough technologies are driving this revolution. Enhanced geothermal systems access energy from hot dry rock using hydraulic fracturing techniques. Advanced geothermal systems employ closed-loop circulation without extracting formation fluids. Super-hot rock technology targets temperatures above 374°C at depths exceeding five kilometres.
These innovations address traditional barriers including high costs, location constraints, and technological limitations that previously restricted geothermal development to specific geological conditions.
Government support accelerates development
The US Department of Energy's $1.36 billion conditional commitment to Project ATLiS for lithium extraction from geothermal brines demonstrates the technology's expanding applications beyond power generation. Exploration activities expanded with new lease awards in Chile, Alaska and Utah covering over 100,000 acres.
Policy momentum builds across North America, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright advocating for next-generation technologies whilst federal initiatives streamline permitting and accelerate development. States including Colorado, Nevada, Utah and North Dakota emerge as development leaders, whilst Canada allocated over CA$50 million in 2024.
"The geothermal sector's 80% increase in new well announcements and nearly $2 billion in total investment reflects unprecedented confidence in technologies that unlock America's vast untapped resources," Adjei concluded.
Positioning for clean energy transition
The sector's transformation from niche applications to mainstream energy solution reflects technological maturation and growing recognition of geothermal's unique advantages: reliable 24/7 generation, minimal land footprint, and compatibility with existing grid infrastructure.
As costs decline and deployment scales increase, geothermal energy positions itself as a cornerstone technology for North America's clean energy transition, offering the baseload renewable generation essential for grid stability as intermittent sources expand.

MAHAGENCO will soon commission 1,071 MW of solar power projects. The installations will provide uninterrupted daytime electricity for irrigation, benefiting more than 300,000 farmers across the Indian state of Maharashtra and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.
The projects fall under the Maharashtra government’s Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0, which aims to support farmers’ financial growth through sustainable energy and reduce electricity service costs. Under the program, distributed solar projects dedicated to agricultural use are being connected to the grid.
The state plans to solarize about 30% of agricultural feeders by 2025 as part of Mission 2025. Solar plants ranging from 0.5 MW to 25 MW will be located within a 5–10 km radius of distribution substations with agricultural loads.
GEAPP India will provide a Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) and a digital platform to support implementation. The platform will manage data collection, track progress, and streamline project management.
A Joint Committee, including all key stakeholders, will oversee timely completion and provide guidance on the Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0. GEAPP India and MAHAGENCO will jointly develop a central dashboard to monitor land acquisition and project execution. Stakeholders will receive training to use the dashboard effectively.
MAHAGENCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Co. Ltd, is one of India’s largest state-run power producers, with an installed capacity of about 13,880 MW. It operates thermal, gas, hydro, and solar generation assets and is increasing its focus on renewables to lower electricity costs and reduce carbon emissions.
GEAPP India is the Indian arm of GEAPP LLC, a global initiative backed by the Rockefeller Foundation, IKEA Foundation, and Bezos Earth Fund. It supports developing nations in accelerating just energy transitions and focuses in India on scalable, distributed clean energy deployment.

Gcl Optoelectronics Finishes 1 Gw Perovskite Pv Module Factory In ChinaGCL Optoelectronics, a unit of GCL Group, has officially commissioned its perovskite photovoltaic module base in Kunshan, China's Jiangsu province. It is the world’s first gigawatt-scale manufacturing facility for perovskite solar modules.
The first phase of the plant, with a nameplate capacity of 1 GW, broke ground in May 2024 and was completed in just over a year. The second phase will expand capacity to 2 GW, depending on market demand. With a total planned investment of CNY 5 billion ($696.9 million), the facility will serve as GCL’s global R&D headquarters and the future listed platform for its perovskite operations.
The Kunshan plant builds on GCL’s early position in perovskite technology, following the launch of its 100 MW pilot line in 2021. The company has since achieved several technical breakthroughs, including certified single-junction module efficiency of 19.04% and tandem cell efficiency of 29.51%, placing it among global frontrunners.
GCL’s large-format modules, measuring up to 1.2 meters by 2.4 meters, are the largest of their kind and have passed TÜV Rheinland’s triple IEC stability certification.
To accelerate innovation, GCL has partnered with Suzhou Laboratory and Soochow University to establish the world’s first AI-driven high-throughput perovskite research center, located on-site. The lab integrates artificial intelligence with high-throughput experimentation to optimize materials formulation and process design.
The company said its modules have already undergone field validation in diverse environments, including high-altitude sites in Qinghai province, demonstration projects in the Gobi Desert, and coastal building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) pilots. These projects reportedly demonstrate the adaptability of GCL’s perovskite technology to extreme UV radiation, temperature swings, and saline or dusty conditions.
GCL plans to scale up production through a dual-track strategy of mass manufacturing and application-specific demonstrations. It is also exploring integration of perovskite modules with long-duration storage and green hydrogen systems to support a vertically integrated low-carbon energy ecosystem covering solar power, green chemicals, and data computing.

Bw Ess And Ibersun Join Forces For 2.2 Gw Bess Project In SpainBW ESS and Ibersun have formed a joint venture to develop utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Spain. The joint venture of the companies is targeting greenfield, four-hour duration assets. It will progress with an initial 2.2 GW pipeline of eight projects.
The two companies will have equal ownership in the projects. Ready-to-Build status for the projects is expected to be achieved within two years. Furthermore, the partners anticipate pursuing a diverse range of revenue generation strategies.
Earlier in May 2025, BW ESS secured debt financing for the 100 MW/331 MWh Bramley battery energy storage system asset in Bramley, Hampshire. Under this agreement, the Australian bank Westpac and UOB will contribute 50 per cent each for the debt facility. The BESS project benefits from a market-first seven-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe. It was inaugurated in February 2025.

Ireland’S Solar Capacity Hits 1.76 GwThe new “Scale of Solar 2025” report by Solar Ireland claims Irish solar has grown by almost 160% since 2023, with the country’s installed PV capacity increasing by 156.8% in two years. The report is based on grid-connection and capacity data from Ireland's distribution system operator, ESB Networks, dating to May 31 of this year.
Despite the promising growth, Ireland currently remains well behind its 2030 target of 8 GW of installed PV. Its total installed solar capacity was 1.76 GW at the end of May.
Utility-scale solar farms make up the backbone of the new capacity, delivering power directly to the grid. The report said micro-generation and small-scale solar power is also making a difference to the sector’s overall growth, particularly as government support schemes incentivize people to install solar for self-consumption.
Ronan Power, CEO of Solar Ireland, said “2025 marks a pivotal moment – not just for solar, but for how we define its place in Ireland’s energy future … In just a few years, we’ve seen solar move from the sidelines to the center of national energy policy.”
Utility-scale solar’s growth trajectory is strong. Ireland’s first large-scale solar farm was energized in County Meath in 2022. In 2025, there is currently 885 MW installed across 19 sites, compared to 349 MW in 2023. There is currently 752 MW in the pipeline across 30 projects.
Solar Ireland’s report notes that installations in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector are particularly impactful because they are large enough to provide cost reductions in energy bills and carbon footprints but small enough – 200 kVA to 1 MW – to avoid grid connection challenges. As of mid-2025, 2.29 MW of capacity is connected across seven sites, up from 0.3 MW in 2023.
Small scale solar (50 kVA to 200 kVA) installed by businesses, schools, farms and on public buildings is also growing thanks to government support schemes such as Solar for Schools, a subsidy program targeting solar for rooftops on schools nationwide. As of mid-2025, Ireland has 40 MW of connected capacity across 328 energized connections in the small-scale category.
Mini-generation systems (17-50VA) designed for self-consumption provide energy independence for small businesses and homes, making a positive impact on the rural economy. According to Solar Ireland, users include dairy and tillage farms, rural agricultural food producers, cold storage facilities, community buildings and sports clubs.
As of mid-2025, Ireland has 55 MW of mini-generation capacity connected across 2,050 energized connections, more than double the number of sites recorded the year before. This growth has been driven by improved grant access, simplified grid connection options and growing awareness in the agricultural sector.
A tennis club saved €6,000 per year on electricity bills and recorded a 20% drop in grid energy consumption thanks to a fully grant-supported installation of 19 solar panels and a Huawei hybrid inverter as part of a partnership with Irish installer Ohk Energy in 2024.
By mid-2025, Ireland had 135 MW of operational auto-production capacity (solar solely for self consumption) across 840 energized connections, up from 95 MW in 2023. This type of generation is mainly used by data centers, water treatment plants, large commercial campuses, land-rich businesses not suited to rooftop installations and agricultural businesses with high thermal or refrigeration loads.
In the micro-generation bracket, by mid-2025 more than 138,000 homes were generating their own electricity, representing 576 MW of installed capacity. National estimates suggest that more than a million rooftops in Ireland are suitable for solar. However, estimates say that just 13.8% of Ireland’s solar-ready rooftops have already been adapted.

New Jersey Launches 2 Gw Energy Storage ProgramThe New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has approved phase 1 of the Garden State Energy Storage Program (GSESP). It is a multi-phase program designed to deploy 2,000 MW of energy storage by 2030. The program aims to expand the amount of grid-scale energy storage capacity in New Jersey.
Phase 1 of the program will procure at least 1,000 MW of larger projects directly connected to the main power grid through competitive bidding. The first phase consists of two tranches. The first solicitation aims to award 350-750 MW. The second solicitation will be prepared for the first half of 2026. It will secure the capacity remaining to reach the 1,000 MW target for phase 1 of the program.
Furthermore, the second phase is expected to be launched in 2026. It will focus on incentives for smaller energy storage systems connected to local distribution grids. GSESP may have a potential third phase to introduce a performance-based incentive for transmission-scale systems. The third phase is currently being evaluated.
