Norway-based aluminium and energy company Hydro Energi has entered a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with NTE to secure 660 gigawatt hours (GWh) from 2027 to 2029.
NTE, which focuses on the production and distribution of renewable energy, will begin delivering power to Hydro Energi from January 2027 through to December 2029 under the PPA.

The PPA will be included in Hydro Energi’s total power portfolio, which comprises 9.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of captive power generation annually and a long-term contract portfolio of 10TWh.
In addition to its role in the Nordic power market, Hydro Energi is responsible for procuring power for Hydro’s aluminium production.
NTE has established its presence in Trøndelag and northern Norway, where it generates 4.8TWh of clean energy annually.
NTE is also engaged in the development and management of energy infrastructure, while providing solutions that aid in the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Renewable power is vital for aluminium production in Norway, with a carbon footprint 75% lower than the global average, and key to Hydro’s net zero emissions target by 2050, according to the press release.
In December 2024, Axpo Nordic and Hydro Energi signed a ten-year contract to supply 2.63TWh of electricity to Hydro.
The long-term agreement, from 2026 to 2035, will see Axpo supply electricity in the SE2 price area, strengthening Hydro’s renewable energy portfolio.
Axpo Nordic had previously signed a power purchase agreement with Stegra to supply electricity to its integrated green hydrogen, green iron and green steel plant in Boden, Sweden.

These include five solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and two wind power projects, with a cumulative generation capacity of 15 GW.Â
The projects, with an estimated investment of $8.3 billion, are planned to add 12 GW of solar PV and 3 GW of wind energy to the national grid. The solar PV projects include the 3,000 MW Bisha plant in the Asir province, the 3,000 MW Humaij facility in Madinah, the 2,000 MW Khulis project in Makkah, and the 2,000 MW Afif1 and 2,000 MW Afif2 projects in Riyadh. The wind projects comprises the 2,000 MW Starah and 1,000 MW Shaqra projects, both located in the Riyadh province. The ownership of all seven projects will be shared between ACWA Power, Badeel, and SAPCO.
These projects are scheduled to become operational in phases between the second half of 2027 and the first half of 2028. Financial closure for the portfolio is expected by the third quarter of 2025. With the addition of these seven new plants, ACWA Power now has 21 solar and wind energy projects under development or operation in Saudi Arabia, totaling over 34 GW of renewable capacity in the kingdom.

India’S Solar Boom: 116 Gw Now Powers 24% Of Total Capacity In 484 Gw Energy MixIndia is steadily expanding its renewable energy sector while trying to balance its growing energy demands and climate commitments. As of June 2025, coal remains the dominant source of electricity, contributing 44.28% to the country’s total installed power capacity. However, the share of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, is rising quickly and becoming a key part of the national energy mix.
In just the first half of 2025, India added 18,383.11 megawatts (MW) of new solar capacity. This growth is being supported by government initiatives such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), which ensures the quality of solar modules and encourages local manufacturing. These efforts are helping the country move towards a cleaner and more self-reliant energy system.
By the end of June 2025, renewable energy sources accounted for 38.8% of the total installed power capacity in India. Solar energy played a leading role in this development. The total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity reached 116.247 gigawatts (GW), representing 62.97% of the total renewable energy capacity. Solar power now contributes 23.98% to India’s entire power mix. This marks a 36% increase in solar capacity compared to the previous year, reflecting the speed at which solar energy is being adopted across the country.
Overall, India’s total installed power capacity touched 484 GW in June 2025, showing an annual growth rate of 8.66%. Despite the fast growth in renewable energy, coal-based thermal power continues to supply nearly half of the country’s electricity. This shows the ongoing challenges in transitioning completely to clean energy sources. Ensuring a stable power supply and grid reliability remains a key concern as more variable renewable energy is added to the grid.
Apart from environmental benefits, the rise of renewable energy is also bringing socio-economic gains. Solar and wind energy projects are creating new jobs, especially in rural and semi-urban regions. These projects are supporting local economies, improving electricity access, and driving development in remote areas. This is enhancing the quality of life for many communities.
Renewable energy is also helping to strengthen India’s energy security. With more power being generated from solar and wind sources, the country is reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels. This also protects the economy from sudden fluctuations in global energy prices. At the same time, advancements in energy storage and grid technologies are making renewable power more reliable and easier to manage.
Global developments are also opening new doors for Indian solar manufacturers. For example, the United States has imposed revised tariffs on solar imports from countries like China. This shift could benefit Indian manufacturers by increasing export opportunities, as long as they maintain high standards and competitive pricing.

Iberdrola Proposes 1.32 Gw Pumped-Storage Hydropower Project In PortugalThe Spanish energy group Iberdrola has launched the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for the Minhéu Hydroelectric Power Project, a planned 1,320 MW pumped-storage hydropower facility that would become Portugal’s largest if built.
Designed to operate in reversible mode, the plant will use the elevation difference between two reservoirs—one to be constructed in the Cumeada area on Monte de Minhéu and hydraulically connected to the existing 1.2 GW Alto Tâmega dam, for which Iberdrola holds exclusive water rights. The project aims to enhance the overall efficiency and energy storage capacity of the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex, commissioned in 2023. Once operational, Minhéu is expected to generate between 2.5 and 3 TWh/year.
The Alto Tâmega complex already includes the 160 MW Alto Tâmega reservoir, the 880 MW Gouvães pumped storage plant, and the 118 MW Daivões plant, both of which have been commercially operating since 2022.

The domestic flexibility service sits alongside Kraken’s optimisation of large assets, such as grid-scale battery sites. The company powers around half of the UK’s grid-scale batteries through a broad network of partnerships with leading utilities, energy suppliers, and traders, enabling seamless route-to-market for battery sites.
Kraken is a co-founder of the Mercury Consortium, a public-private initiative that was set up with the goal of establishing a “Bluetooth for energy” - setting a common framework for the integration of devices such as EVs, heat pumps, home solar and batteries into the grid, no matter the manufacturer or energy provider. This will help to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies.

In Detail :India recorded a significant milestone in June 2025 by adding 7.3 GW of renewable energy capacity, marking a sharp increase from just 1.4 GW in the same month last year. This growth was primarily driven by large-scale solar and wind installations, reflecting accelerated momentum in the country’s clean energy transition.
Of the total addition, 5.4 GW came from solar energy projects, supported by faster approvals, favorable policies, and improved project execution. States such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra played a key role in driving this growth, reaffirming their position as renewable energy hubs.
With this addition, India’s total non-fossil fuel power capacity has reached 242.8 GW out of a total 484.8 GW. Notably, this means non-fossil sources now make up 50 percent of the country’s installed power capacity—achieved five years ahead of the government’s 2030 target.
Foreign direct investment in India’s clean energy sector has also surged, crossing ₹1.6 lakh crore. This reflects growing investor confidence and strong public–private collaboration in driving the country’s energy transition goals forward.
Despite the rapid increase in installed capacity, coal still remains the primary source for actual power generation. Bridging the gap between capacity and output remains a priority as India works toward a more balanced and sustainable energy mix.
To build on this momentum, India is focusing on areas like battery storage, green hydrogen, and recycling of renewable components. Upgrading the grid, improving financial stability in the power sector, and reducing fossil fuel dependence will be critical to sustaining progress toward a low-carbon future.

Saudi Arabia Signs For 15 Gw Of Solar And Wind ProjectsSaudi Arabia’s state-owned power procurement company, Principal Buyer, has entered agreements worth SR31bn ($8.3bn) with a consortium led by ACWA Power for the development of seven new solar and wind power projects with a combined capacity of 15GW. The ventures are part of the National Renewable Energy Programme overseen by the Ministry of Energy, and aim to strengthen the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The consortium includes the Water and Electricity Holding Company, owned by the Public Investment Fund, and Saudi Arabia’s Aramco Power. It will develop three photovoltaic solar projects, namely the 3 GW Bisha project in the Asir region, the 3 GW Humaij project in the Madinah region and the 2 GW Khulis project in the Makkah region. The Afif 1 and Afif 2 projects in the Riyadh region, with a cumulative capacity of 4 GW, will also be developed.
Wind energy projects include the 2 GW Starah project and the 1 GW Shaqra project in the Riyadh region.
This collective agreement marks the largest-ever single-phase commitment to renewable energy development internationally and underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to leading on climate action through affordable electricity production while simultaneously raising investor confidence within its borders.
The company has initiated renewable electricity generation projects with a combined capacity of 43.213 GW to date.

Poland Allocates 1.67 Gw Of Pv In Renewables AuctionsPoland’s URE has shared the results of seven renewables auctions that took place this month.
An auction for solar and wind installations greater than 1 MW selected 95 solar bids with a combined capacity of 1,623 MW and three onshore wind bids totaling 82.7 MW.
The minimum price for solar agreed under the auction was PLN 216.90 ($59.46)/MWh compared to a maximum price of PLN 329.68/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 389/MWh.
The minimum price for wind agreed was PLN 100/MWh compared to a maximum price of PLN 320/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 324/MWh.
Meanwhile, an auction for solar and wind installations of no more than 1 MW selected 83 solar bids with a combined capacity of 47.7 MW and no wind bids.
The minimum price for solar awarded under the auction was PLN 314.77/MWh, compared to a maximum price of PLN 374.77/MWh, against a reference price of PLN 414/MWh.
As happened last year, a further five auctions were held covering hydroelectric power plants, agricultural biogas plants and installations using biomass and biogas other than agricultural. These auctions were not resolved due to a lack of offers, as Polish law stipulates an auction must receive at least three valid offers to be contracted.
URE said 21% (16 TWh) of the total electricity allocated across the seven auctions was approved, for 30% (PLN 5.0 billion) of the total value available.
Poland’s solar capacity reached 21,994 MW by the end of the first quarter of 2025, according to a new report from the country’s Instytut Energetyki Odnawialnej (IEO).

Saudi Arabia Signs 5 Solar Ppas Totaling 12 GwIn Saudi Arabia, five solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) have been signed for a total capacity of 12 GW.
The PPAs were signed between the Saudi Power Procurement Company and a consortium led by ACWA Power acting as the main developer, in partnership with the Water and Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) and Aramco Power.
The solar projects include the 3 GW Bisha project in the Aseer region of southern Saudi Arabia, which has an agreed levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of SAR 0.0484 ($0.0129)/kWh.
The PPAs also cover the 3 GW Humaji project in the western Madinah region, with a LCOE of SAR 0.049/kWh, and the 2 GW Khulis project in the western Makkah region with a LCOE of SAR 0.051/kWh.
The five solar PPAs are rounded off by two 2 GW projects in the Riyadh region, Afif 1 and Afif 2, each with an agreed LCOE of SAR 0.047/kWh.
A further two PPAs, covering two wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 3 GW, were also signed. The seven agreements represent the largest capacity globally signed for renewable energy projects in a single phase, a statement from the Saudi Power Procurement Company says.
Together, the seven projects have a total investment of SAR 31 billion ($8.3 billion) under the country’s National Renewable Energy Program. Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power, commented that the agreements are the largest and most comprehensive under the program to date.
Scheduled to be operational across the second half of 2027 and the first half of 2028, the financial close of each of the seven projects is expected by the third quarter of this year.
The Saudi Power Procurement Company is a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company and is responsible for procuring, selling and trading energy within Saudi Arabia. Its work includes preparing feasibility studies and tendering electricity generation projects alongside signing PPAs with developer consortia.
According to data available on its website, the company has launched over 43 GW of renewable electricity generation projects since its inception. There are PPAs in place for over 38 GW of the capacity, with over 10 GW already connected to the grid.
Capacity connected to the grid is expected to reach 12.7 GW by the end of 2025 and surpass 20 GW by the end of next year.
Saudi Arabia's cumulative solar capacity surpassed 4.2 GW by the end of last year, according to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Iberdrola has initiated the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for the Minhéu Hydroelectric Power Project, a pumped storage facility with 1,320 MW of installed capacity. If built, it would be the largest pumped-hydro station in Portugal.
The Minhéu project is designed to complement Iberdrola’s Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex by increasing the system’s energy efficiency and storage capacity. It includes construction of a reservoir in the Cumeada area on Monte de Minhéu, hydraulically linked to the Alto Tâmega dam. Iberdrola holds exclusive rights to use the dam’s water resources.
The planned reservoir will not draw from any additional water basins. It will operate only with water already licensed for the Alto Tâmega reservoir.
The plant will run in reversible mode, using the elevation difference between the reservoirs for pumping and turbine operation. Iberdrola expects the project to add between 2,500 GWh and 3,000 GWh of annual output.
The project is open for public consultation from Friday through July 3.
Iberdrola commissioned the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric complex in 2023. The facility includes the Alto Tâmega reservoir (160 MW), the Gouvães pumped storage plant (880 MW), and the Daivões plant (118 MW). Gouvães and Daivões have been in commercial operation since 2022.
