The Scottish energy company SSE has received approval from the Scottish government to develop the 4.1 GW Berwick Bank offshore wind park, located in the outer Firth of Forth off the East Lothian coast in Scotland (United Kingdom). This marks the final major regulatory consent required for the project to proceed.
The next steps depend on SSE securing a contract through the UK’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme for low-carbon electricity, and reaching a final investment decision (FID). The company plans to take part in an upcoming government auction (AR7 auction round) that supports renewable energy initiatives. A successful bid would allow it to sell electricity at fixed prices for at least 20 years. If fully realised, Berwick Bank would become the world’s largest offshore wind installation, capable of supplying clean electricity to over six million homes each year.
In June 2025, the Scottish Government launched a public consultation on raising the national offshore wind target to 40 GW by 2040, up from 8–11 GW by 2030. It estimates a potential of 40 GW by 2035 and remains committed to net-zero emissions by 2045.

Us Residential Solar Faces 46% Drop By 2030 Under Obbba, But Long-Term Market Poised For 1,500 Gw Growth – Wood MackenzieThe One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), recently passed in the United States, is expected to reduce the adoption of residential solar systems significantly in the coming years. According to a new analysis by Wood Mackenzie, the elimination of key market drivers, including the Section 25D investment tax credit (ITC) for customer-owned residential solar systems after 2025, will lead to a potential drop of up to 46% in residential solar capacity by 2030 compared to earlier projections.
This policy change will make it more difficult for homeowners to afford solar installations, creating a major disruption in the near-term market. Wood Mackenzie’s latest report, titled “Near-term challenges but long-term potential: evaluating the US residential solar addressable market,” highlights the extent of the impact. Without the ITC, many companies in the solar sector may not survive the next few years. However, the industry is expected to adjust over time.
Zoe Gaston, principal at Wood Mackenzie, stated that many companies may not stay in business, but the market will adapt. She added that the remaining solar companies are likely to diversify their offerings and find new ways to reduce costs. Despite the removal of certain incentives, rising retail electricity rates will continue to support the economic benefits of residential solar.
The long-term outlook remains positive. The total addressable market (TAM) for residential solar is projected to grow to nearly 1,500 GW by 2050. Using data from the US Census Bureau and internal modeling, Wood Mackenzie estimates that there will be around 92 million single-family, owner-occupied homes in the country by mid-century. Of these, more than 70 million homes could potentially install solar systems over the next 25 years, excluding unsuitable properties and homes that already have solar.
Even in a conservative scenario where only 12% of the addressable market adopts solar, the sector could still add 150 GW of capacity by 2050. Technological advancements, new business models, and falling costs are all factors that could further accelerate adoption beyond current low-case estimates. The report concludes that while the short-term challenges are significant, the residential solar market in the US holds strong long-term potential.

Syria Will Receive Azeri Gas Via Türkiye For 1.2 Gw Power FacilityAzerbaijan has begun swap-based natural gas shipments to Syria, whereby volumes are delivered to Türkiye and equivalent Turkish supplies are then exported to neighbouring Syria to fuel a 1.2 GW gas-fired power plant in Aleppo. A swap agreement between Türkiyes state pipeline operator BOTAŞ and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR enables the transfer of Azeri gas to the Turkish-Syrian border. The gas is routed through Türkiye’s Kilis province and delivered to Aleppo via the Yavuzlu station, at a rate of up to 6 mcm/d (up to 2.2 bcm/year). Following the restoration of damaged pipeline infrastructure, the cross-border connection was completed in May 2025. It allows for a potential export capacity of up to 2 bcm/year of natural gas. For now, the planned delivery volume stands at 1.2 bcm/year.
In parallel, Türkiye is increasing its electricity exports to Syria. Power is currently transmitted through eight interconnection points, with capacity expected to grow by 25%. There are also plans to reactivate the Birecik–Aleppo transmission line, which previously had a capacity of 500 MW. Once fully operational, combined electricity exports could reach up to 900 MW. Türkiye has also announced broader energy cooperation with Azerbaijan to support future gas deliveries to Syria.

Siemens And Cscec Start Building The 1 Gw Beiji-2 Gas-Fired Power Plant In IraqIraq has launched the first phase of construction of the Beiji Gas Power Plant 2, which will have a total installed capacity of 1,014 MW. The project is being carried out by a consortium comprising Germany’s Siemens Energy and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). It involves the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbines, each with a capacity of 169 MW, bringing the total to 1,014 MW. The project also includes the development of seven 400 kV transmission lines and a new 132 kV network that will be constructed to serve Salah al-Din Province. The first two units are expected to become operational within 27 months, with the remaining units to be commissioned one by one every two months thereafter, according to the Iraqi government.
In May 2025, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to develop 14 GW of new gas-fired generation capacity in Iraq, and to renovate and upgrade the 340 MW Dibis gas-fired power plant and the Al-Musayyib thermal power plant (rehabilitation of existing units of 750 MW and addition of 150 MW). In April 2025, the Ministry had signed a similar agreement with GE Vernova for the development of 24 GW of new gas-fired power capacity in the country.

New York Power Authority Doubles Renewables Target To 6.6 GwFrom pv magazine USA
The New York Power Authority doubled the capacity in its renewables plan following the backlash it received to an earlier draft released in January.
The Renewables Updated Strategic Plan calls for 7 GW of solar, wind and energy storage. The previous draft called for a combined capacity of 3.3 GW of solar, storage and wind projects, including 2.8 GW from solar.
The new draft adds 17 solar arrays, three wind projects and 156 energy storage systems (four of which are standalone energy storage projects), adding 3.8 GW to its total capacity planned. It also increases NYPA’s renewable energy efforts in downstate New York.
The increase comes amid mounting public pressure for NYPA to increase its renewables plan. The strategic plan’s earlier draft was a fifth of what many organizations and public comments had called for.
Public Power NY Coalition said NYPA’s earlier strategic plan lacked justification for only 3.3 GW.
NYPA was given the authority to develop, own and operate renewable energy projects as part of the Build Public Renewables Act in the 2023–2024 state budget, which was the result of about four years of clean energy policy initiatives. NYPA used this authority for the first time earlier this year, acquiring its first fully owned project.
New York expanded NYPA’s authority to help the state build at least 15 GW of public renewables by 2030, as mandated by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
“NYPA’s initial plan under CEO Justin Driscoll failed to put the state on track for New York to meet its legally mandated climate targets of 70% renewables by 2030,” Public Power NY Coalition said in a statement. “New Yorkers submitted an unprecedented 5,300 public comments in just two months calling for the state to build more.”
“Instead of cutting deals with Trump or gutting New York’s climate mandates the way he is federally, Governor Hochul must ensure NYPA leads the nation on lowering energy bills, slashing pollution, creating good green jobs, and protecting our planet now,” Public Power NY Coalition said in a statement.
The NYPA Board of Trustees and New York State Canal Corporation Board of Directors held a joint meeting July 29 to discuss its renewable efforts, among other things.
During the meeting, a board member noted the pushback NYPA received following its initial draft and NYPA’s response to double its renewable plans.
Christopher Hutson, NYPA senior vice president of Development said within the projects they have in queue, there are several that NYPA thinks are far enough along to meet the July 2026 deadline to receive federal incentives.
“We’re trying to pull those projects forward and make sure that those get awarded to be able to support that particular [investment tax credit] requirement,” he said. “Past that point, beyond storage and evaluating other solar and wind projects, we will continue to deep-dive evaluate and determine which projects have the viability for us to advance the portfolio.”
However, Hutson said NYPA expects there to be some attrition to the projects in its queue through various means. “Some of them may progress on their own. Some of them just do not fit the viability for us to move forward,” he said.
In June, the backlash that followed NYPA’s prior draft led New York lawmakers to pass The Public Renewables Transparency Act. Were Gov. Hochul to sign off on the legislation, the act would create more oversight in NYPA’s efforts and progress it makes toward its renewable energy strategic plan.
“Since the enactment of [the Build Public Renewables Act], what’s often missing are the transparency and accountability measures the public deserves in return for the unique power such authorities are granted,” said Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha (D), one of the bill’s sponsors.
NYPA simultaneously initiated its mandated annual conferral process upon the release of its new drafted plan. NYPA said the timing is so people can consider it during discussions with NYPA about its renewable energy development program. The conferral reports from 2023 and 2024 are available here.
Public comment
The public comment period for the updated plan is open until Sept. 12, 2025. Public comments may be submitted through NYPA’s strategic plan comment portal.
Upon releasing its previous draft plan, NYPA reopened a request for qualifications to additional private developers, including community-based developers and investors, who are interested in working with the Power Authority to develop solar, storage and wind projects. NYPA said so far, 94 developers and investors have been pre-qualified. Submissions can be made here, which NYPA will review on a rolling basis until Sept. 30.
NYPA will host virtual public hearings on August 19 and 20. Those who are interested in speaking at one of the public hearings may RVSP on NYPA’s public hearings page. The Board of Trustees will vote on the plan Dec. 9, 2025.
NYPA generates 22% of the state’s power and is the largest public power organization in the country, according to NYPA.
New York state also recently released the draft to the state’s energy plan, which is currently open for public comment as well.

Spain’S Cox Acquires 2.6 Gw Of Iberdrola’S Mexican Power Assets For Us$4.2BnThe Spanish water and renewable energy company Cox has announced the acquisition of Iberdrola’s power assets in Mexico for US$4.2bn. The deal includes 2,600 MW of operational capacity across 15 power plants, comprising 1,368 MW from combined-cycle and cogeneration plants, and 1,232 MW from renewable sources (six wind parks and three solar parks). It also covers a 12 GW project pipeline and the acquisition of Mexico’s largest qualified user supplier, which holds a 25% market share and supplies over 20 TWh annually to more than 500 large customers.
Mexico is a strategic market for Cox, which plans to invest over US$10.7bn in the country between 2025 and 2030, including this acquisition. In February 2024, Mexico’s antitrust regulator, the Federal Economic Competition Commission (Cofece), approved the acquisition by the Mexican Government of 13 Mexican power plants owned by Iberdrola for US$6bn (MXN102.34bn). The transaction included 12 CCGT power plants with a total 8,436 MW installed capacity (Monterrey I & II, Altamira III & IV, Altamira V, Escobedo, La Laguna, Tamazunchale I, Baja California and Topolobampo II & III, operated under the Independent Energy Generator regime, plus the private CCGT plants Monterrey III & IV, Tamazunchale II and Enertek) and the 103 MW La Venta III wind park.
