Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday (August 14) announced that the Coastal Road project, designed to reduce travel time between south Mumbai and the suburbs, will be extended up to Bhayandar in Thane district. This extension will cover the entire western sea-facing stretch of Mumbai.
During a meeting with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, Goyal outlined that the extension will be divided into 4-5 construction packages. He emphasized that once completed, the road will significantly alleviate commuting challenges for Mumbai residents.
“The Coastal Road will now be extended till Bhayandar. There will be 4-5 packages to distribute the construction work. Once the entire stretch is operational, it will be a huge relief for Mumbaikars who commute daily by vehicle,” Goyal said.
Goyal also noted that discussions have taken place with Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, to expedite environmental approvals. The environmental clearance report for the extended Coastal Road segments is expected by August 23.
“The environmental clearance report for the extended stretches of Coastal Road will come out by August 23. I also held a meeting with Yadav to speed up the clearance of the Coastal Road-related proposals,” he said.
The Coastal Road, estimated at approximately Rs 14,000 crore, will connect directly with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time across the city. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently reported that the nearly 12-km stretch from Marine Drive to Worli is 91% complete.
Addressing Mumbai’s traffic issues, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal mentioned requesting the Tata Group’s operational and research report to help alleviate congestion. He also plans to involve IIT Bombay, leveraging their expertise in solving local train service problems to address traffic concerns.
“IIT B has successfully addressed issues with Mumbai’s local train services, demonstrating their expertise. I believe their knowledge can be valuable in this situation as well,” he said.
Additionally, Goyal outlined a collaborative project between the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Maharashtra government to develop a 37-acre sports complex in North Mumbai.
“A new sports complex equipped with modern facilities is being planned. It aims to serve the youth of Mumbai as well as talented individuals from the rural and tribal areas of Thane and Palghar districts. The funding for this project will be sourced from the existing budget, ensuring that the complex can become a reality without requiring additional financial resources,” he said.
This facility will support the youth of Mumbai and the surrounding rural and tribal areas. Funding will come from the existing budget to avoid extra financial burden. Goyal recently discussed this project with Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports.
