Water is the crucial link between the climate system, human society and the environment. As we mark World Water Day, it is a reminder of the importance of taking action for water conservation. With global water challenges on the rise, responsible water management has never been more essential.

Driving UAE’s sustainable vision, the country continuously supports global efforts towards water security and conservation. Initiatives such as the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 are essential in encouraging corporations to work together to achieve our shared goal. Corporations need to inspire action by taking action and staying true to a solid sustainability strategy.

At GMG, we pride ourselves on embracing sustainability as a journey, not a destination. Our ‘Planet Forward’ pillar aims at ensuring the company’s actions are geared towards building a better planet for everyone by tackling energy, waste disposal, recycling and water management.

The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 presents a long-term strategy that aims to ensure sustainable water supplies to meet the needs of the community and the economic prosperity of the UAE. To aid this goal and the community, GMG strives to reduce pressure on freshwater resources and is committed to investing in solutions that reduce water scarcity. With the participation of all entities and authorities, we can effectively create real change, aiding both water security and the UAE’s strategy.

In alignment with the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 and GMG’s commitment to sustainability, GMG has made remarkable strides in wastewater treatment and water conservation. In 2023, GMG established advanced wastewater treatment plants at Dubai Industrial Park (DIP) and Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), reinforcing GMG’s commitment to sustainable water usage and environmental conservation.

Over the past year, GMG’s logistics arm, “Trilogi” has treated approximately 9.8 million imperial gallons of wastewater, marking a 37.4% increase compared to the previous year. This treated water has been effectively utilised for irrigation, including the irrigation of 1,300 Ghaf trees using recycled water from our Mega DC facility. We commit to recycling all our wastewater and achieving 100% water circularity within our business operations.

Additionally, GMG has introduced water-saving upgrades across its operations, including sensor-activated systems and enhanced water management practices in its factories, warehouses, and retail stores.
