The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, along with Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), has inaugurated a $270m consolidated cargo handling centre at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City, US.
This facility, the first new cargo centre at JFK in 25 years, consolidates operations from four separate cargo zones into one modern location, aiming to reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency.

Operated by WFS, the new centre is expected to enhance JFKâs status as a key hub for global trade, particularly for high-value cargo such as pharmaceuticals and electronics.

Spanning 350,000ft² and replacing two older facilities, the new centre is part of the Port Authorityâs wider redevelopment plans for the airportâs north cargo area.
It accommodates future cargo growth while improving logistics and freeing up land for development.
Innovative features of the centre include an advanced truck dock management system that optimises the flow of goods, reducing wait times for truck drivers and minimising congestion.
The facility also includes dedicated cooler space for temperature-sensitive goods and emphasises sustainability with electric forklifts and vehicle chargers.
The new centre is projected to generate 100 permanent jobs, prioritising hiring from the surrounding community.

Avialliance Announces ÂŁ350 Million Investment In Ags AirportsAviAlliance has announced new plans to invest 350 million GBP in both the growth and decarbonisation of AGS Airports over the next five years.
The announcement, which comes after the operatorâs recent acquisition of the group comprising Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports, will see significant projects initiated to aid in the facilitation of AGSâ accelerated growth.
Among plans announced, AviAlliance has stated it will begin a major transformation of Glasgow Airportâs main terminal building, as well as provide funding for the expansion of airfield infrastructure and energy efficiency initiatives at the airport.
Southampton Airport will undergo a number of redevelopment works within its terminal building whilst Aberdeen Airport will see similar levels of investment in its airfield infrastructure.
The programme itself aligns with the UK Governmentâs industrial strategy to attract investment within the country, as well as supporting the Scottish Governmentâs ambition to develop both the connectivity and quality of Scottish exports.
AGS plays a critical role in driving economic and social prosperity across Scotland and the UK. We have ambitious plans for the long-term, sustainable growth of our airports including the strengthening of our connectivity which underpins the success of the regions we serve.
This significant investment will not only enhance the fabric of our airports, it will enhance the role they currently play in facilitating trade and tourism, and, importantly in generating meaningful employment across the country.
In addition to the new investment plans, AviAlliance also named Charles Hammond OBE as the new Chair of AGS following his recent step down as Chief Executive of Forth Ports in 2023.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), today celebrated the opening of a new state-of-the-art $270 million consolidated cargo handling center at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). As the first new cargo facility at JFK in 25 years, this new cargo center will consolidate operations from four separate cargo zones into a single modernized location, reducing congestion, streamlining operations and unlocking space for future development.
The JFK air cargo sector plays a vital role in the regional and national economy, supporting more than 93,000 direct and indirect jobs and generating $11.4 billion in economic activity annually. The new consolidated cargo handling center enhances JFKâs role as a premier hub for global trade and is expected to generate new jobs and economic development opportunities while improving service for industries reliant on high-value cargo such as pharmaceuticals, electronics and perishables.
âWe are in the midst of historic overhauls across all of our airports, and this new cargo center is yet more proof of the transformation that is underway,â said Port Authority Chairman Kevin OâToole. âThis new consolidated cargo center reduces truck congestion, lowers emissions and creates good-paying jobs, all while supporting the industries that power the region and the nation.â
âBy replacing outdated facilities with a modern cargo center, weâre preparing for the future and improving efficiency and sustainability at JFK,â said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. âJFK plays a central role in global commerce, and this modern consolidated cargo center strengthens its position as a key gateway for high-value goods and international trade.â
Operated by WFS, JFKâs primary cargo handler, the 350,000-square-foot facility spans 26 acres and replaces two older facilities. The new cargo center is the first step in the Port Authorityâs broader redevelopment plans for the airportâs north cargo area to accommodate recent and future long-term cargo growth through modern and efficient cargo facilities. Consolidation of cargo facilities in the north area aims to reduce congestion, improve logistics flow, and free up land for future development needs at the airport. In the United States, JFK is the nationâs busiest entry point for low-value international e-commerce packages, handling about one-quarter of all such incoming shipments, as well as a key high value international cargo hub. In 2024, JFK handled 1.67 million tons of cargo, a 5 percent increase from 2023 and 25 percent more than in 2019, making it the eighth-busiest cargo airport in the U.S. and 21st globally.
Several innovations in the new cargo center are expected to streamline the airportâs cargo operations, reducing wait times for truck drivers and minimizing queuing outside the facility. These include an advanced truck dock management system designed to optimize the flow of goods in and out of the facility, leveraging real-time scheduling, automated check-ins, and digital communication between drivers and dock operators. The system automatically allocates the most efficient doors based on the size, type, and contents of each delivery, maximizing throughput and reducing delays. The system also ensures that trucks arrive only when a dock is available, greatly reducing idle wait times and on-site congestion. This coordination ensures that fewer trucks are on the road or waiting in nearby neighborhoods, leading to reduced noise, emissions and traffic congestion for the surrounding community.
The new consolidated cargo handling center also includes 3,000 square feet of cooler space for goods requiring 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius environments, making it JFKâs first dedicated on-airport facility for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and perishables.
The facility also sets a new benchmark for sustainability, advancing the Port Authorityâs industry-leading commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to facilitate the same goal for its operational partners. The new cargo handling center features electric forklifts, electric vehicle chargers, and an automated unit load device system to optimize power usage.

The project also exceeded its goals for participation by minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs), with more than 42 percent of construction contracts awarded to MWBE firms, creating significant economic opportunities for local communities. The new facility is expected to generate 100 permanent new jobs, with a priority on hiring from the airportâs surrounding community through ongoing and targeted local hiring events and outreach in partnership with the Council for Airport Opportunity and other workforce development organizations.

Norfolk International Airport Earns 4-Star Rating At 2025 Passenger Terminal ExpoNorfolk, VA (April 16, 2025) â Norfolk International Airport (ORF) has been awarded a 4-Star Regional Airport Rating after a recent rigorous onsite audit by London-based Skytrax. Skytrax aviation research ratings are known as a global benchmark of airport standards, developed through many years of professional experience and qualitative knowledge of the airport industry.
Additionally, at the World Airport Awards, Skytrax revealed the results of their annual airport customer satisfaction survey at the Passenger Terminal Expo 2025 on April 9 in Madrid, Spain. ORF was one of more than 575 airports rated in the survey and was recognized as the #4 airport in the world among the Worldâs Best Domestic Airports and the top-ranked U.S. airport in this category surpassing Dallas Love Field, Chicago Midway, and Kansas City. ORF was also acknowledged as the only U.S. airport among the global top ten best airports handling less than 5 million passengers.
Norfolk Airport Authority President and CEO Mark Perryman states âWe engaged Skytrax for an intensive two-day airport audit in February. We were extremely pleased to receive a certified 4-Star rating for the third consecutive year. Skytrax apply ratings between 1-Star and 5-Star for up to 800 customer-facing areas of airport product and service. Product ratings include the airport website, wayfinding, terminal design and dĂŠcor, maintenance and cleanliness, passenger flows and efficiencies, and features such as seating, restrooms, family facilities, accessible travel, leisure and entertainment, Wi-Fi, shopping, and dining.
The report concluded that ORF is continuing to deliver a 4-Star Airport experience across various frontline product and service categories, demonstrating ongoing progress. Customer satisfaction levels in most touchpoints are generally above the 4-Star Rating level. L2 Aviation Now Open At Cvg AirportErlanger, KY (April 16, 2025) â L2 Aviation, a leading provider of global avionics services (think flight control systems and other electronics installed in an aircraft) held a grand opening ceremony at CVG Airport today. The ceremony took place inside the companyâs hangar and included remarks from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear as well as L2 Aviation and CVG officials. After remarks, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place outside of L2 Aviationâs accompanying office building near the hangar. Guests were treated with tours of the facilities.
Over the last several months, L2 Aviation remodeled an office building and hangar space and expects to be fully operational by the end of this year, adding 250 jobs and investing $12.2 million at CVG. The company is now hiring, and its services include engineering, certification, installation, fleet modernization, and manufacturing, which complement existing and future aircraft maintenance and repair services on CVGâs campus.
âKentuckyâs aviation and aerospace industry has seen tremendous growth in the last few years,â said Gov. Beshear. âThis investment from L2 Aviation will bring hundreds of quality job opportunities to the Northern Kentucky region and is yet another example of a company believing in what this great state has to offer. Airports Authority Names Ashley K. Carvalho New General CounselWill Succeed Retiring General Counsel Johnna Spera
The Airports Authority board of directors approved the selection Wednesday of Ashley K. Carvalho as senior vice president and general counsel, succeeding Johnna Spera, who retires at the end of this week. Carvalho currently serves as senior legal counsel at the Massachusetts Port Authority, or âMassport,â which operates Boston Logan International Airport, Worcester Regional Airport, Laurence G. Hanscom Field, the Conley Container Terminal and Flynn Cruiseport.

Carvalho has been with Massport since 2017, focusing on regulatory compliance, policy development, contract negotiations, litigation and other legal matters. Her prior work includes serving as an attorney with the City of Boston, the Committee for Public Counsel Services in Boston, the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney in Florida and private law practice. She holds a law degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and a bachelorâs degree from Campbell University in North Carolina.

Istanbul Makes Runway HistoryÄ°GA Istanbul Airport is the first airport in Europe to successfully implement the triple runway operations system.
The new system was officially launched on April 17 by Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir UraloÄlu. He gave the first command to Turkish Airlines pilots, from the ATC tower, enabling the simultaneous take-off of three scheduled flights.
With this new system â expected to make a significant contribution to the Turkish economy â iGA Istanbul Airport now has the capacity for simultaneous take-off and landing operations on three independent runways. As a result, the airportâs hourly air traffic capacity has increased from 120 to 148 aircraft movements. This operational transformation not only optimises traffic management in Istanbul but also across European airspace, making it faster, safer, and more efficient. The additional 28 aircraft movements per hour mean shorter waiting times for airlines, fewer delays for passengers, and reduced carbon emissions for the environment.
This system plays a crucial role in supporting iGA Istanbul Airportâs vision of accommodating 200 million passengers per annum. A key component is the airport collaborative decision making (A-CDM) system, which will enhance the predictability of air traffic movements, improve slot allocation, and ensure more efficient runway usage.
The transformation process at Ä°GA Istanbul Airport began in 2022. A comprehensive safety analysis and airspace design process was carried out in close cooperation with the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), Turkish Airlines (THY), EUROCONTROL, and other international authorities. During this period, 500 air traffic controllers undertook 4,500 hours of training based on specially developed operational scenarios for the new system.
The new operational structure is supported by cutting-edge solutions such as advanced radar systems, full A-CDM integration, improved slot management, and digitally optimised taxi times.
In addition, close coordination with EUROCONTROL ensures seamless integration with European airspace, reduces delays, and optimises traffic flow. Air traffic control teams use the latest radar systems, navigation tools, and predictive analytics to ensure smooth operations. Real-time data enables controllers to make quick, informed decisions, while predictive tools help visualise flight patterns and prevent potential runway conflicts â a critical advantage, especially during peak travel periods.

Mr. Lyttle will oversee Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Executive Airport (ORL). MCO is one of the nationâs Top 10 airports, welcoming more than 57 million annual passengers in 2024. ORL provides vital general aviation access to the heart of the Central Florida region.
In addition to day-to-day operations, Mr. Lyttle will lead a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program to enhance both airports. These improvements include extensive renovations of Terminals A and B, construction of a Consolidated Rental Car (ConRAC) Facility, and installation of a state-of-the-art parking guidance system, among other projects.

RESTROOMS RENOVATION PROJECT
In a significant step toward upgrading the MCO passenger experience, the Board also signed off on a major restroom renovation and addition project for the airsides at Terminals A and B.
Balfour Beatty Construction was selected as the Design-Builder of this important project.
The $71.9 million project will improve the passenger journey by renovating all existing restrooms, and adding new restrooms or expanding existing restrooms where space permits. This project includes all four airsides, providing additional capacity to meet anticipated future passenger demands. Additional improvements will include renovations to companion restrooms and service animal relief areas.
Funding for the project will come from a combination of Federal Aviation Administration Grants, Capital Expenditure Funds, and a line of credit reimbursed by General Airport Revenue Bonds.
Restroom renovations and expansions are part of a broader renovation project in the Terminals. The renovation projects are set for substantial completion between 2027 and 2028, marking a new era of comfort and convenience for passengers at Orlando International Airport.airport

Lufthansa Innovation Hub (LIH), the Berlin-based innovation arm of Lufthansa Group, and Munich Airport Terminal 2 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance aviation innovation. As the industry faces growing pressures on operational efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience, both parties have committed to exploring joint initiatives that digitalise, automate, and optimise airport operations.
The collaboration aims to enhance operational stability and customer satisfaction through pilot projects with startups, including those supported by LIH Ventures. A key example is the deployment of two autonomous robots by robotics startup Ottonomy at Munich Airport Terminal 2. These robots operate at the gates and baggage claim area, helping passengers with information, promoting Lufthansaâs services, and directing them to digital self-service tools via QR codes.
âOur mission is to offer our guests the best travel experience in Europe,â said Marcus Schnabel, Vice President Ground Operations Hub Munich. âEmbracing digital solutions is crucial to this endeavour, and we are delighted to be a testing ground for pioneering innovations.â
The Ottonomy robots also feature integrated containers for transporting goods, such as bottled water, offering future potential to streamline passenger services. âOur robots, powered by Contextual AI, are enabling enterprise customers to drive innovation, delivering better customer experiences and operational efficiencies in the aviation industry,â said Ritukar Vijay, CEO of Ottonomy.
This pilot is part of Startup Gate, Lufthansa Groupâs venture clienting programme, which connects internal teams with promising startups to enable lean, cost-effective tech adoption.

Ä°GA Istanbul Airport boosts capacity and efficiency with Europeâs first triple runway operations, supporting future growth and global aviation leadership.
On 17 April 2025, Ä°GA Istanbul Airport became the first in Europe to successfully implement Triple Runway Operations, a move hailed as a milestone in aviation history. From the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, TĂźrkiyeâs Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir UraloÄlu, gave the inaugural command to Turkish Airlines pilots, enabling the simultaneous take-off of three scheduled flights.
With this new system, Ä°GA now supports simultaneous take-off and landing on three independent runways, increasing its hourly air traffic capacity from 120 to 148 movements. This innovation is expected to reduce delays, improve efficiency across European airspace, and lower carbon emissions, marking a significant advancement for TĂźrkiyeâs strategic aviation role.
Aimed at realising Ä°GAâs vision to handle 200 million passengers, the new operations bolster the airportâs capacity to manage growing passenger and cargo traffic. Enhanced by Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM), the system improves slot allocation, optimises runway usage, and boosts predictability of movements.
Commenting on the milestone, Mehmet Kalyoncu, Board Member of Ä°GA Istanbul Airport, said:
âI am proud to state that as of today we are officially launching triple independent runway operations at Ä°GA Istanbul Airport, setting a precedent in Europe and once again elevating TĂźrkiye to the top in the field of aviation. This is not only a technical achievement for us, but also a strategic milestone⌠Istanbul is no longer just a destinationâit is now a global air transport hub.â
The transformation began in 2022 in collaboration with the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), Turkish Airlines, Eurocontrol, and other international stakeholders. A safety analysis and redesigned airspace supported implementation, while 500 air traffic controllers underwent 4,500 hours of scenario-based training.
Advanced radar systems, full A-CDM integration, optimised taxi times, and predictive analytics underpin the new structure. Real-time data helps controllers manage complex traffic flows, especially during peak hours. Designed for future demands, Ä°GAâs infrastructure supports seamless integration with European airspace, reinforcing its status as a global aviation hub.

Developed in collaboration with Hello Lamp Post, the AI-powered tool is accessible via QR codes across the terminal and supports passengers with vital information directly on their mobile devices. It caters to a wide range of travellers, including those with accessibility needs and international visitors.
The system helps reduce routine enquiries directed to airport staff, enabling operational teams to focus on more complex matters. âHello Aberdeenâ also collects valuable data on passenger needs, providing insights that inform service improvements.

Asia-Pacific and Middle East airports will invest $240 billion to expand capacity, modernise infrastructure, and support future passenger and cargo growth.
Airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are set for a combined investment of US$240 billion between 2025 and 2035, targeting both the upgrade of existing facilities and construction of new airports. This was revealed by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), representing over 600 airports across 46 countries and territories.
A recent ACI APAC & MID survey of more than 30 key airports outlined two strategic focuses: brownfield (modernising existing infrastructure) and greenfield (new airport development). Brownfield projects will account for US$136 billion, creating capacity for 680 million additional passengers and 14 million tonnes of cargo. Greenfield projects will see US$104 billion invested to add capacity for 562 million passengers and 57 million tonnes of cargo.
The total increaseâ1.24 billion passengers and 71 million tonnes of cargoâis equivalent to 13 Dubai International Airports in passenger volume and 14 times Hong Kong International Airportâs cargo throughput. This growth will help meet anticipated demand in the region.
SGK Kishore, President of ACI APAC & MID, said: âThe US$240 billion investment is not just about concrete and runways, itâs about socio-economic development in the region.â
Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI APAC & MID, added: âIn todayâs increasingly complex economic landscape, we need the continuous support of governments to further liberalise air transportation and streamline visa policies across region.â
By 2053, airports in these regions are projected to serve nearly 11 billion passengers, up from 3.9 billion in 2024. The investment strategy remains closely aligned with market demand, ensuring sustainability and operational efficiency. Financial sustainability will also rely on balanced adjustments to airport charges to recover capital costs while remaining affordable.
Looking ahead, sustainability and digitalisation will define airport evolutionâenabling reduced carbon footprints and more efficient passenger experiences. This investment marks a pivotal shift in infrastructure planning, balancing resilience, innovation, and growth across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

Kansai International AirportâS New-Look T1 Ready For World ExpoKansai International Airportâs fully refurbished Terminal 1 has opened to accommodate the millions of passengers expected to pass through the iconic building to attend World Expo in Osaka.
The new Terminal 1 includes a 60% increase in the size of the international departure lounge and retail offerings, the introduction of innovative retail layouts based on passenger experiences, and the creation of a seamless processing experience.
Kansai Airports and global design firm Populous have been working for more than seven years to completely reimagine the airportâs floor plan, bringing a new level of efficiency and experience for travellers to western Japan.
Populous led the architecture and interior design of the redevelopment, as well overseeing the project throughout construction.
The project was completed in four phases to allow for continued operations of the airport, which is expected to accommodate more than 40 million passengers a year from 2025 and almost double international capacity.
In October 2022, KIX opened the new Phase 1 domestic area followed by the new international area.
Phase 2 of the project was completed in December 2023, and included 6,650 square metres of additional airside retail outlets, 1,130 square metres of food and beverage space and a new centralised immigration area.
Phase 3 was completed on March 27, 2025, allowing the consolidation and extension of the security screening area to be ready before World Expo 2025 begins in April in Osaka.
Phase 3 includes faster, more comfortable and smoother security inspection with additional smart lanes capable of processing between 4,500 and 6,000 passengers an hour.
The new queuing management system is the first of its kind in Japan, automatically controlling flapper gates to switch waiting lines by utilising real-time passenger flow data.
The system enables passengers to be automatically guided to the security inspection lanes based on the number of passengers and their flow.
A new commercial area includes 13 stores across international departures, international arrivals and a street food court.
The project has already been recognised for its architectural vision as a finalist in the 2023 World Architecture Festival Awards for Future Projects â Infrastructure.
Regarded as part of the high-tech architecture movement of the 1990s, KIXâs industrial design is famous for its asymmetrical clear-span sweeping aerofoil roofline.
At 1.7km long, it is one of the longest airport passenger terminal buildings in the world.airport

Huge Investments Planned For Asia-Pacific And Middle East AirportsAirports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions are poised to undergo extensive development, with combined investments of $240 billion dedicated to both upgrading existing facilities (brownfield projects) and building new airports (greenfield projects) between 2025 and 2035.
This capital expenditure, revealed today by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), the trade association representing over 600 airports from 46 countries/territories, highlights the regionsâ commitment to meeting the increasing demand for air travel and cargo.
ACI APAC & MID conducted a comprehensive survey, comprising over 30 key airports from the region to assess airport development needs.
The findings indicate a strategic focus on both modernisation of the existing airports and development of new airport infrastructure.
â Brownfield Development (Modernisation of existing airports): More than $136 billion would be invested to upgrade existing airports, creating an additional 680 million passenger capacity and 14 million tonnes of cargo capacity.
â Greenfield Development (Development of new airports): In excess of $104 billion will be allocated to build new airports, adding 562 million passenger capacity and 57 million tonnes of cargo capacity.
This combined investment will create additional capacity for 1.24 billion passengers â the equivalent of more than 13 airports the size of Dubai (DXB) the worldâs busiest airport for international passengersâand 71 million tonnes of cargo capacity, which equals nearly 14 times the cargo throughput of Hong Kong (HKG), the top ranked airport for Cargo in the world.
This significant increase will ensure airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are well-equipped to handle anticipated future growth.

These are proven drivers of economic development. In contrast, protectionist measures ultimately hinder progress and limit opportunity.â
Between 2025 and 2035, airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are projected to invest approximately $240 billion in infrastructure, reflecting a pragmatic and demand-responsive approach to capacity planning.
Rather than overextending, airports in these regions continue to align investment closely with market conditions and passenger demand forecasts, ensuring capital is deployed efficiently and sustainably.
According to ACI APAC & MID, this disciplined approach reflects a broader commitment to resilient and adaptive infrastructure planning, positioning the sector to support regional growth while maintaining financial prudence and operational agility.
By 2053, the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions are expected to serve nearly 11 billion passengers, close to a three-fold increase from the 3.9 billion passengers in 2024.airport

The robots will also provide information such as tax refunds and lost and found services.
In addition to passenger assistance, the robots are equipped with integrated containers for transporting goods, with plans to distribute bottled water to passengers in the future.

Passenger Counts Continued To Grow At Ontario International Airport In MarchCargo tonnage increased 11% at Southern California gateway
(Ontario, California â April 16, 2025)Â â The number of passengers who chose Ontario International Airport (ONT) rose for the 49th straight month in March as the airport welcomed nearly 560,000 travelers.
The Southern California gatewayâs passenger count totaled 559,619 last month, up 0.5% from March 2024. During the first three months of 2025, ONT welcomed almost 1.5 million air travelers, 0.6% higher than the same period in 2024.

Elkadi noted that airlines are increasing the number of seats on flights to and from ONT by 8% in April, a hopeful sign heading into spring and summer travel.
Meanwhile, Ontario saw strong growth in air cargo last month, increasing by 11%. From January through March, air cargo tonnage was 8.2% greater than the same period last year.

Edmonton International Airport (YEG) has officially unveiled its new sensory room, an immersive space designed to support passengers with sensory sensitivities, including autism, anxiety and other cognitive or neurodivergent challenges.

Located post-security near Gate 49 in the domestic-international departures lounge, Edmonton International Airportâs new sensory roomâdeveloped in partnership with Autism Edmontonâoffers a quiet, calming space where passengers can relax away from the busy airport atmosphere.
Inside the sensory room, passengers will find a quiet space with:
âAt YEG, we believe airports should be accessible and welcoming for all passengers. We also understand that the airport environment can be overwhelming for some individuals. Working with the guidance of Autism Edmonton, we designed our sensory room to offer respite for neurodivergent passengers, including those with autism, anxiety or other sensory processing challenges. Long Beach Airport Celebrates Completion Of Terminal Roadway ImprovementsLong Beach, CA â Long Beach Airport (LGB) officials today marked the completion of the Airportâs Terminal Roadway Improvements Project, which has resulted in improved vehicular and passenger flow and additional enhancements for those with mobility challenges.
âOur award-winning Long Beach Airport is making it even easier for travelers to get on their way with these roadway upgrades,â said Mayor Rex Richardson. âFor more than a century, LGB has been committed to smooth travels, and the completion of this critical road work ensures an even more seamless and convenient experience.â
Underway since January 2024, the Terminal Roadway Improvements Project provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) enhancements, including more curb space, crosswalks, ramps, signage, handrails and lighting in front of the main drop-off and pick-up area. These enhancements will improve traffic flow and make the area safer and more easily navigable for pedestrians. Some underground work was also done to upgrade several utilities, including sewer lines connected to the Historic Terminal.
âThe Airportâs continued investment in modern infrastructure is delivering real benefits,â said Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr. âWith these terminal roadway upgrades, we are excited to see travelers experience better traffic flow and improved pedestrian access.â
The total cost of the project was $16.6 million, with $10.6 million funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and the remainder funded by Airport revenue.
âAt Long Beach Airport, we like to say âthe going is easyââand now, itâs even easier,â said Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. âWith these roadway improvements complete, travelers can enjoy even more convenience from curb to gate.â

Aci Reveals World'S Busiest Airports In 2024Airports Council International (ACI) World has released preliminary data on the worldâs busiest airports for 2024, highlighting a resilient recovery in global air travel despite ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
The early rankings provide an overview of global airport performance across passenger traffic, cargo volumes, and aircraft movements.
According to ACI Worldâs early estimates, nearly 9.5 billion passengers travelled through airports worldwide in 2024, representing a 9% increase compared to 2023 and a 3.8% rise over pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The ten busiest airports accounted for 9% of global traffic, serving a total of 855 million passengersâan 8.8% increase from 2023.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its position as the worldâs busiest airport, followed by Dubai International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Notably, Shanghai Pudong International Airport rose from 21st to 10th place in the global rankings. The airportâs ascent was supported by policy changes easing visa access, growth in international flight services, and a broader recovery in the Asia-Pacific aviation sector.
Istanbul Airport and New Delhi International Airport also maintained strong positions in the rankings, reflecting sustained growth driven by their infrastructure developments and airline expansions.
Airports continued to face a complex operating environment in 2024. Factors such as supply chain disruptions, aircraft production delays, and geopolitical tensions contributed to rising operational costs and uncertainty around flight planning. In some regions, proposed trade tariffs and global construction inflation presented additional risks to passenger and cargo growth.
Despite these pressures, ACI World projects that global passenger traffic will reach approximately 9.9 billion in 2025, with an annual growth rate of 4.8%. However, growth is expected to transition from post-pandemic recovery to more gradual, long-term expansion.
In advanced economies, capacity constraints and slower economic growth may influence this trend, while emerging markets are anticipated to drive further expansion due to increased infrastructure investment and rising travel demand among middle-income populations.
Global air cargo volumes reached over 124 million metric tonnes in 2024, marking an 8.4% year-on-year increase and a 3.9% gain compared to 2019. The top ten cargo airports handled approximately 32.3 million metric tonnesâaround 26% of total global cargoârepresenting a 9.3% year-on-year increase.
The growth in air cargo was largely attributed to continued e-commerce demand, disruptions in maritime shipping, and reduced jet fuel costs. Hong Kong International Airport remained the worldâs busiest cargo hub, followed by Shanghai Pudong and Memphis International Airports.
An estimated 100 million aircraft movements occurred globally in 2024, reflecting a 4.3% increase from 2023. This figure is approximately 97.4% of the movement levels recorded in 2019.
The ten busiest airports accounted for more than 6% of global movements, with a total of 6.4 million flights. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Chicago OâHare, and Dallas Fort Worth ranked as the top three airports for aircraft movements.
The rankings are based on preliminary data collected from over 2,700 airports worldwide. Final figures will be published by ACI World in July 2025. This data contributes to a detailed understanding of trends in global air travel and helps inform planning and investment decisions across the airport industry.airport
