SAN ANTONIO [MAR. 3, 2025] – San Antonio International Airport (SAT)’s momentum continues into 2025 as, San Antonio International Airport launches its first-ever nonstop to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) on American Airlines.
The new air service is a significant step in SAT’s commitment to meeting the increasing demands of air travel and is the culmination of more than a decade of efforts to secure this vital connection.
“This is a vital connection between our community and the heart of our nation’s capital,” said Jesus H. Saenz, Jr., IAP, Director of Airports. “It will strengthen opportunities for our residents, businesses and visitors while enhancing the travel experience at SAT. We are committed to providing seamless, customer-focused service and will continue to transform SAT into a world-class airport that reflects the needs of San Antonio and our region.”
In December 2024, the United States Department of Transportation formally approved American Airlines’ application to become the only carrier operating nonstop service between DCA and SAT. The flight will operate daily. To commemorate the city’s rich history and significant military contributions, American Airlines flight 1718 recognizes the year San Antonio was founded, while flight 1947 celebrates the year the U.S. Air Force was established.
“SAT continues to rise to the occasion and meet the demand of our region’s expansion,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “When the airport thrives, San Antonio thrives. Our airport’s success fuels growth and prosperity for our entire region, driving economic development, creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life for our community. This nonstop route between SAT and DCA will do exactly that.”
“The nonstop connection is a powerful economic driver for our city and region,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “By strengthening ties between San Antonio and one of the most influential cities in the world, we’re creating access that will increase opportunities for business development, partnerships, and open doors for our local industries, entrepreneurs, and workforce.”
The event was attended by U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, Congressman Joaquin Castro and Henry Cuellar and American Airlines’ Vice President of Global Government Affairs, Steve Neuman.
The City of San Antonio is the fastest-growing city in the United States, is home to one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the country and is proudly known as Military City USA®. Before this launch, it was the largest city in Texas lacking nonstop service to DCA and the largest city in the U.S. with a majority Hispanic population without nonstop service to DCA.
With this addition by American Airlines, SAT now offers travelers nonstop access to all three commercial airports serving the Washington, D.C. area.
