South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDIʼs U.S. subsidiary has signed a major supply contract. The company stated that the agreement will remain confidential until January 2030. South Korean media reports suggest that the order may be related to Teslaʼs energy storage system (ESS) business.
In November 2025, Samsung SDI had informed Korea Exchange that it was negotiating with Tesla to supply batteries for ESS projects. The company made this statement in response to media reports about a potential order valued at around the equivalent of more than two billion US dollars. In December 2025, Samsung SDI signed an ESS supply contract worth around 1.37 billion dollars with an unnamed U.S. infrastructure company. With the now suspected Tesla contract, Samsung SDI has received another major order within a month in the same market segment. The strategic shift toward the ESS market is occurring amid stagnating demand in the electric mobility sector.
