TARMAC have appointed Mick Stovin as general manager – industrial minerals within their Circularity team, reinforcing the company’s focus on resource efficiency, value creation, and the increased use of recycled and secondary materials across its operations.

In his new role, Mr Stovin will lead the development and delivery of Tarmac’s industrial minerals strategy, with a remit to maximize the value of materials already within the business and reduce reliance on externally sourced virgin products. A key priority will be increasing the internal supply of low-carbon, recycled and secondary minerals for use across Tarmac’s asphalt, construction and industrial applications.

Mr Stovin brings more than 40 years’ experience across industrial minerals, building products, logistics, and agriculture. He has held senior commercial and leadership roles across the UK and Europe, most recently as European commercial director at LKAB Minerals, and has extensive experience in mineral extraction, processing, logistics and specialist industrial applications. He has also previously run his own logistics and minerals consultancy.

At Tarmac, Mr Stovin will support the company’s wider circular economy ambitions by identifying opportunities to internalize material supply chains, valorize secondary materials and introduce recycled products into new industrial markets. This includes increasing the use of recycled asphalt fillers, expanding accredited recycled materials to replace virgin minerals, and supporting the development of new circular product offerings for both internal and external customers.

Mr Stovin is also chairman of the British Calcium Carbonate Federation and the Agricultural Lime Association, and sits on the Mineral Products Association Council, where he represents Tarmac across key industry bodies and contributes to discussions on sustainable mineral use, standards, and best practice.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Stovin said: ‘Tarmac has a real opportunity to unlock significantly more value from the materials it already produces and handles, while reducing carbon impact at the same time. My role is about looking at minerals differently – recognizing their true value, keeping materials in use for longer, and finding smarter, lower-carbon ways to supply both our own operations and wider industrial markets. It’s an exciting challenge and one that aligns perfectly with Tarmac’s circularity ambitions.’

Steve Birch, circularity director at Tarmac, added: ‘Mick [Stovin] brings an exceptional depth of knowledge across industrial minerals, logistics and circular material use. His experience and industry leadership will be invaluable as we continue to embed circular principles across the business, reduce our reliance on virgin materials and create higher-value, lower-carbon solutions. We’re really pleased to welcome him to the Circularity team.’
