Integrated subsurface, wells, and facilities specialist, Elemental Energies, announces its acquisition of the specialist geoscience company, Applied Petroleum Technology AS (APT).

APT provides petroleum geochemistry, basin modelling and subsurface analysis to support well exploration, production and P&A decisions, with a long-established track record supporting operators across complex basins of varying maturity. The strategic move strengthens Elemental Energies’ existing subsurface capability, creating an integrated and unrivalled team spanning geoscience, reservoir engineering, geochemistry and petroleum engineering.

The acquisition meets rising demand for deeper subsurface insight as operators increasingly seek integrated, operator-level technical support to underpin critical decisions across the full well lifecycle, from exploration to CCS and late-life P&A operations. APT’s laboratory-based geochemical analysis adds a critical layer of subsurface insight to Elemental Energies’ offering alongside traditional geoscience and reservoir engineering workflows. Together, the combined capability will give operators clearer evidence of fluid connectivity, more realistic reservoir models enabling improved production and reduced costs, and greater confidence in exploration, development, production and abandonment decisions.

The acquisition forms part of Elemental Energies’ strategy to build broad, operator-level capability across key technical disciplines, with the scale and geographic footprint required to support complex global portfolios. The deal increases Elemental Energies’ global workforce by around 10%, taking the company to over 300 people worldwide, with teams across Norway, the UK and North America.

Mike Adams, CEO of Elemental Energies, said: “As subsurface decisions become more complex across mature assets, decommissioning and CCS, we are continuing to invest in specialist capabilities that help our clients make more informed decisions. Bringing APT into Elemental Energies expands our subsurface and geochemistry expertise, creates new opportunities for our teams and strengthens our ability to support clients at every stage of the asset life cycle.”

APT will also bring established digital tools to Elemental Energies, such as Girasol, used for wellsite gas interpretation and P&A decision-making. These capabilities will strengthen the company’s existing subsurface and wells workflows, enabling more joined-up analysis through integrated geochemistry, sustained annular pressure assessment, and containment assurance for late-life assets.

Helge Nyrønning, CEO of APT, added: “APT has always focused on delivering high-quality geochemical insight to support critical subsurface decisions. Becoming part of Elemental Energies is an exciting next step for our business and our people. It gives us the scale, reach and multidisciplinary environment to grow our capabilities, work more closely with clients we already know well, and apply our geochemistry expertise within fully integrated subsurface and wells teams, particularly from our strong base in Norway.”
