Angola’s national oil company (NOC) Sonangol announced that it expects to achieve 22% of its goal to increase the country’s refining capacity to 445,000 barrels per day (bpd) by the end of this year.
Announced by Joaquim Kiteculo, CEO of Sonangol Refining in Cape Town on April 9, the NOC aims to achieve this milestone through the conclusion of Phase 1 of the Cabinda oil refinery, which is currently under construction and targets a refining capacity of 60,000 bpd.
“We aim to reduce imports of derivatives by 14% by 2026,” Kiteculo stated.
In addition to the Cabinda refinery, Angola has three other oil refineries in various stages of development. The Luanda refinery is operational and has a production capacity of 65,000 bpd. The Soyo refinery is in the financing stage and will have a production capacity of 100,000 bpd, while the Lobito refinery is under construction and will have a capacity of 200,000 bpd.
Meanwhile, Kiteculo also announced that Sonangol is working with energy major Eni and multinational energy group Honeywell to develop a bio-refinery in the country. Work on the bio-refinery is expected to begin by the end of 2026.
