powerplantOman: The GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has announced a direct electrical interconnection project with Oman, featuring two 400 kV transmission lines spanning approximately 530 km and two new 400 kV substations in Ibri and Al Bynouna. The system will include a dynamic compensator station and provide a total capacity of up to 1,600 MW.
The $700 M project is funded through Gulf partnerships, including $600 M from the Qatar Fund for Development and Sohar International Bank. It aims to accommodate rapid electricity demand growth, support renewable energy integration, enhance grid stability, and improve operational flexibility across GCC member states.
The interconnection will link the GCCIA’s Al Sila station in the UAE to Oman’s Ibri station, equipped with advanced protection, control, and communication systems following international standards. By enabling high-efficiency power exchange, the project will improve reliability, facilitate emergency support, and generate operational and economic savings.
Officials emphasised the strategic significance of the project. Undersecretary Mohsen Hamad Al Hadrami described it as a continuation of the long-term GCC vision for regional grid integration, energy security, and sustainable development. GCCIA CEO Ahmed Ali Al Ibrahim noted that the expansion represents one of the largest projects in the Authority’s history, translating GCC leadership’s strategic goals into operational infrastructure.
Fahad Hamad Al Sulaiti from the Qatar Fund for Development highlighted the initiative as a model of regional cooperation, supporting energy transition and economic growth while strengthening Gulf electricity systems.
The direct connection with Oman enhances the depth of the Gulf grid and marks a key step in creating a more resilient and integrated regional electricity network.
