Germany’s latest offshore wind auction for 2.5 GW of capacity has closed without a single bid, prompting calls from the country’s offshore wind associations for urgent reform.
The auction covered two centrally predeveloped areas in the North Sea, zones N-10.1 and N-10.2, which together span approximately 182 km
2
. These sites were scheduled to begin operation in 2030 and 2031. No investors submitted offers by the 1 August 2025 deadline. According to current regulations, the Federal Network Agency is now required to relaunch the tender for the same sites.
In June 2025, Germany awarded offshore area N-9.4 to the French energy group TotalEnergies. The concession was granted for a period of 25 years, extendable to 35 years, with a potential capacity of 1 GW.
Germany has a total installed capacity of 257 GW (end 2024), of which offshore wind capacity accounted for 8.85 GW (3%). The country targets 30 GW of wind offshore by 2030, 40 GW by 2040, and at least 70 GW by 2045.

Germany’S Uniper Targets €5Bn Investment To Reach 15–20 Gw By 2030Germany’s state-owned energy utility Uniper has released a strategy update and will invest €5bn (US$5.8bn) by 2030, mainly in renewables and gas-fired power plants. The bulk of the investment will go toward expanding Uniper’s renewable and gas-fired power portfolio. The company targets 15–20 GW of capacity by 2030, with at least half expected to be renewable, low-carbon, or decarbonizable —covering solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, and new gas plants designed to eventually operate carbon-neutrally via green hydrogen or carbon capture.
Uniper also plans to expand its gas and LNG portfolio to 250–300 TWh/year in the medium term. It aims to consolidate its sales volumes of 180–200 TWh/year in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while selectively growing LNG sales in Asia. In July 2025, Uniper signed an eight-year natural gas supply deal with Canada’s Tourmaline Oil Corp, starting in November 2028, for around 4.8 Mt/year (~68 TWh). In April 2025, it signed a contract with Australia’s Woodside for up to 2 Mt/year (~28 TWh) of LNG, with significant volumes destined for Europe.
In 2024, the company postponed its €8bn transformation plan to the early 2030s due to weak renewables returns and slow hydrogen market growth. It confirmed this timeline in its latest strategy update.

Adani Power Announces 2.4 Gw Coal-Fired Plant Worth Us$3Bn In Bihar (India)India’s Adani Power will build and operate a 2.4 GW coal-fired power plant worth US$3bn in the state of Bihar (India). The project involves a greenfield 3x800 MW ultra-supercritical (USC) power plant, developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model. The first of the three units is expected to be commissioned within four years (2029), with the final unit coming online within five years (2030). The company will supply 2,274 MW power to North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SBPDCL).
Adani currently operates 18.1 GW of coal-fired capacity across 12 plants in eight states. It recently won bids to build and operate a 1.5 GW plant in Uttar Pradesh (May 2025) and a 1.6 GW facility in Maharashtra (September 2024).
Coal remains central to India’s energy mix, accounting for 50% of installed capacity and 70% of power generation in 2024. India aims to have 50% of its installed capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030 and has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070.

Stellar Pv Secures Aud 4.7 Million For 2 Gw Solar Wafer Plant Study In AustraliaFrom pv magazine Australia
Ingot and wafer manufacturer Stellar PV is closer to bringing advanced solar manufacturing back to Australia with the help of a AUD 4.7 million Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) fund to conduct a feasibility study for a 2 GW low-emissions polysilicon ingot pulling and wafering facility near Townsville, Queensland.
Stellar PV Chief Executive Officer Louise Hurll told pv magazine the project is planned for the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct near Townsville.
“This location has been strategically chosen as there is work underway on a potential polysilicon site nearby, which could create an integrated value chain, from quartz mining through to wafer production, all in one area,” Hurll said. “Additionally, Townsville is located in Queensland, known as our ‘Sunshine State,' and around us there is abundant solar energy resources, which will be critical for producing solar ingots with a low carbon footprint.”
The funds allocated to Stellar are part of the federal government’s AUD 1 billion Solar Sunshot program, that seeks to commercialize solar innovations and enhance supply chains.
ARENA’s recent AUD 45.5 million funding round drawn from SunShot’s $50 million Round 1B for feasability and engineering studies, issued AUD 35.5 million to Tindo Solar and AUD 11 million shared between Solquartz, Energus and Stellar PV.
Stellar PV’s aim is to produce high purity silicon ingots and wafers on home soil to support a cleaner and more secure global energy future while strengthening supply chain resilience and diversity in the solar industry, but the process is not without its challenges.
“As the first project of its kind in Australia, one of the key challenges is the longer timeline and complexity involved in getting such facilities fully commissioned compared to established operations in Asia,” Hurll said. “However, we are fortunate to have several team members with decades of experience which positions us well to overcome these challenges.”
The Townsville facility will process polysilicon to produce silion ingots using the Czochralski method then convert the ingots to silicon wafers using a wire sawing process.
“The Czochralski (CZ) method is the most widely used and advanced technology globally for producing high-purity silicon ingots for solar cells,” Hurll said. “It enables excellent crystal quality and uniformity, translating into better performance and is why it is our preferred method.”
The feasibility study will cover technical feasibility, economic viability, environmental impact, workforce development strategies, engineering work and community engagement.
To align with the Round 1B objectives, Stellar PV will potentially provide a pathway to the development and operation of a sustainable and commercial scale solar manufacturing facility and provide a pathway towards domestic supply of ingots and wafers.
“We are delighted to have the support of ARENA through this $4.7 million feasibility study grant. It is a strong signal of confidence in the role domestic manufacturing can play in advancing Australia’s renewable energy ambitions,” said Hurll.

Acwa Power, Sec, And Kepco Secure $3.4 Billion Financing For 3.6 Gw Saudi Power ProjectsACWA Power and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), in partnership with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), have announced the signing of senior debt financing agreements for the Rumah 1 and Nairyah 1 Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects. The total senior debt raised amounts to SAR 12.8 billion (USD 3.4 billion).
The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) serves as the principal buyer for both projects, overseeing the tendering process and power offtake. Project ownership is split among ACWA Power (35%), SEC (35%), and KEPCO (30%) through the project companies Remal Energy Company and Naseem Energy Company.
With a combined generation capacity of 3,600 MW, the projects are a key part of the Ministry of Energy’s optimal energy mix strategy, aimed at ensuring reliable power supply and boosting local content in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. They also contribute to the Kingdom’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, as well as ACWA Power’s own goal of reaching net zero by 2050. “ The successful dry financial closure of the Rumah 1 and Nairyah 1 IPP projects underscores the investor confidence in ACWA Power’s strategic vision and our proven track record in delivering sustainable power solutions. India Adds Record 22 Gw Renewable Energy In First Half Of 2025, Highest Biannual Growth EverIndia achieved a significant milestone in its clean energy journey by adding a record 22 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in the first half of 2025. This marks a 57% increase compared to the 14.2 GW installed during the same period in 2024, making it the country’s highest-ever addition within a six-month span. The new capacity includes 18.4 GW of solar energy, 3.5 GW of wind power, and 250 megawatts (MW) of bioenergy generated from plant and animal waste.
A key driver behind this surge is the government’s Interstate Transmission System (ISTS) charge waiver, which currently stands at 25% and will gradually increase each year until full implementation by June 2028. This policy has significantly lowered project costs and motivated developers to fast-track installations.
With this growth, India is steadily advancing toward its target of sourcing 50% of its installed power capacity from clean energy sources. The country now has a total renewable capacity of 234 GW, which includes large hydropower projects. However, while the addition of renewables is impressive in terms of emissions reduction potential, fossil fuels still dominate electricity generation. Coal, oil, and gas-fired plants accounted for about 75% of the country’s electricity in the first half of the year, underlining the ongoing challenge of transitioning away from fossil-based energy.
Nuclear energy is also beginning to expand its footprint. The recently commissioned Unit 7 of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project—a 700 MW reactor—has been connected to the northern grid. Additionally, the government has approved the development of India’s first small modular reactor (SMR) in the state of Bihar. While nuclear power is being explored as a clean alternative, it continues to spark debate due to concerns about high costs, safety, and long-term waste management.
The first half of 2025 also saw a notable rise in battery energy storage systems (BESS). A total of 5.4 GW of collocated solar-BESS and 2.2 GW of standalone BESS were awarded to developers, making it the highest BESS allocation in India to date. This growth reflects increasing attention to grid reliability and better integration of renewable energy. According to Rystad Energy, this momentum is expected to continue.
Tariff trends also show promise: standalone BESS projects received average quoted prices of INR 4,000 ($48.02) per megawatt-hour (MWh), while collocated solar-BESS projects saw lower rates at INR 3,208 ($38.50) per MWh. This pricing trend may encourage more developers to prioritize integrated solar-storage projects over standalone solar installations.
Sushma Jaganath, Vice President, Renewables & Power Research, Rystad Energy, said in a statement, “India installed 22 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first half of 2025, a new record. However, the country is still banking heavily on coal to meet growing power demand, with plans to install an additional 80 GW of new thermal projects. India is not yet undergoing a true energy transition; instead, it is focusing on building up installed capacity from both conventional and renewable energy sources to ensure energy security. Without urgent action to improve affordability and sustainability, particularly through grid upgrades and energy storage, coal will remain central to electrification efforts, jeopardizing progress toward India’s net-zero goals.”
Several major energy players were awarded large capacities in the recent auctions. Jindal Group secured 990 MW of collocated solar and storage, while NTPC and ReNew Power each won 900 MW. In the standalone storage segment, JSW Energy was allocated 625 MW, and Reliance Power secured 525 MW of collocated capacity. Adani Green Energy, which has traditionally focused on standalone solar and wind, also participated, winning a 510 MW collocated solar-BESS project, indicating a strategic shift in its development approach.
India’s western states continue to lead the renewable energy rollout. Rajasthan holds the top position with 37.4 GW of installed capacity, comprising 32 GW of solar and 5.2 GW of onshore wind. The state’s success is supported by high solar irradiance and expansive desert land. Gujarat ranks second with 35.5 GW, including 21.5 GW of solar and 13.8 GW of wind. Tamil Nadu follows with 11.8 GW of wind and 10.6 GW of solar capacity and also leads in bioenergy with 1 GW of the national total of 11.6 GW. Onshore wind power is also significant in Karnataka (7.7 GW), Maharashtra (5.3 GW), Andhra Pradesh (4.4 GW), and Madhya Pradesh (3.2 GW).
Overall, India’s renewable energy sector is experiencing accelerated growth, driven by supportive policies, increased developer participation, and growing demand for energy security and sustainability. However, challenges remain, particularly in reducing dependence on coal and scaling up supporting infrastructure to ensure a smooth energy transition.

Netherlands Installs 4.32 Gw Of Solar In 2024The Netherlands installed about 4,320 MW of solar capacity in 2024, according to official statistics from CBS, the national statistics agency.
The 2024 total compares to 4,765 MW installed in 2023 and 4,713 MW in 2022.
Last year’s new capacity included about 3 GW from commercial and industrial PV systems and utility-scale plants, and about 1.3 GW from residential installations.
The country’s total installed PV capacity reached 28,621 MW by the end of December 2024.
DNE Research said the Netherlands could reach 59 GW by 2030 and 98 GW by 2035, with projections for 2050 ranging between 100 GW and 180 GW.
Netbeheer Nederland, the Dutch association of national and regional electricity and gas network operators, said in a recent report that the country could reach between 100 GW and 180 GW of total solar capacity by 2050.

Aep Forecasts 24 Gw New Load By 2030USA: American Electric Power (AEP) projects 24 GW of new customer load by 2030, a 14 % increase from the previous quarter, largely fuelled by surging data centre demand. The utility now plans to boost its five-year capital investment plan from $54 B to up to $70 B, reflecting rapid growth in high-intensity power users like crypto facilities, manufacturers, and hyperscale digital hubs.
In its Q2 earnings call, AEP noted that all 24 GW is underpinned by signed agreements. Looking further ahead, the company reports 190 GW of customer interest in connecting to its grid—five times its current 37 GW system size.
CEO William Fehrman called the load growth “unprecedented,” with more than half of the 24 GW concentrated in ERCOT (Texas), 9 GW in PJM (primarily data centres), and 2.5 GW in SPP.
To address this, AEP is investing nearly $10 B in renewables, all of which currently qualify for federal tax credits. It is also securing up to 1 GW of Bloom Energy fuel cells to provide interim, customer-sited power while long-term infrastructure is developed.
AEP operates the largest transmission network in the US, spanning 11 states, making it attractive for large energy users. However, to protect other ratepayers, AEP has introduced dedicated large load tariffs. The PUCO recently approved a requirement for data centres to pay for at least 85 % of their subscribed energy, even if usage is lower.
These developments position AEP as a central player in the grid modernisation effort needed to meet the explosive growth in digital demand.

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released the ALMM for PV cells. The list features six domestic manufacturers: FS India (First Solar’s India arm), Jupiter, Emmvee, Mundra (Adani), Premier Energies, and ReNew. They have a combined annual solar cell production capacity of 13 GW.
Mundra (Adani) has an approved cumulative capacity of 3,832 MW, including 1,939 MW of bifacial monocrystalline silicon passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC) and 1,893 MW of bifacial n-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon).
FS India has 3,212 MW, Premier Energies has 1,925 MW of bifacial monocrystalline silicon PERC, Emmvee has 1,553 MW of bifacial n-type TOPCon, ReNew has 1,766 MW of bifacial monocrystalline silicon PERC, and Jupiter International has 779 MW of monocrystalline PERC bifacial.
All projects covered under ALMM with bid submission dates on or before Aug. 31, 2025, must use ALMM-listed solar panels but are exempt from using ALMM-listed cells, even if commissioned after June 1, 2026.
Projects with bid submission dates after Aug. 31, 2025, must use only ALMM-listed modules and cells, regardless of commissioning date, including those commissioned before June 1, 2026.
