The Netherlands, Rotterdam: Activity is increasing on Maasvlakte beach as work advances on connecting new offshore wind farms to the Dutch grid. Grid operator TenneT, together with its contractors, has moved into the next stage of the project for the IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma and Nederwiek 2 wind farms.

Temporary work areas have been set up following the completion of underground land cables by contractor NRG. These cables carry direct current from the landing point at Slufterstrand to converter stations further inland. With that phase finished, contractor NKT is now preparing to install the subsea cables.

The current focus is on building raised work platforms on the beach. These will support horizontal directional drilling (HDD), allowing cables to be routed beneath the beach and seabed before reaching the sea. Because the shoreline slopes gently, large cable vessels cannot operate close to land. Drilling underground reduces disruption to the beach, nature and visitors.

Drilling rigs, generators and other equipment will stand on the elevated platforms to ensure stable and safe operations, even in poor weather. Drones are also being used for survey flights, gathering detailed data on soil conditions, elevation and the subsurface. All flights are closely monitored by certified pilots.

Drilling is due to begin in spring. Protective ducts will then be installed for the future cables. Subsea cable installation is planned for 2027, with offshore works continuing until 2030.

Most of the beach will remain open, with any temporary closures announced in advance.
