The record additions significantly strengthened India’s total installed renewable energy base. Higher clean energy capacity improves long-term energy security and supports more predictable power supply for industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.
Policy support played a crucial role in enabling this achievement. Clear targets, transparent bidding mechanisms, and improved regulatory processes helped developers execute projects at scale and within shorter timelines.

The New York Solar Energy Industries Association has recommended nine ways for the administration of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to speed solar and storage deployment in the city, in a “solar+storage playbook.”
The playbook’s top proposal is for the city of 8.5 million people to raise its solar goal to 2 GW by 2035 and create a new storage goal of 2 GW by 2030. That “matters,” the playbook says, because the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) projects that New York City could have reliability shortfalls over the next several years, and distributed solar and storage “are our fastest and cheapest tools” to meet the city’s needs for clean, reliable power.
The playbook calls for Mamdani to lift a “de facto ban” on residential batteries in the city by supporting a city council bill that would align the city’s fire code with New York State’s recently enacted fire code. The bill would enable “safe residential and medium[-sized]” batteries that meet rigorous UL safety standards, and help provide resilience to power outages, the playbook says.
Describing New York City as a “load pocket,” with high density and high peak electrical demand, the playbook also asks Mamdani to call on utility Con Edison to grant community-scale batteries “transparent and fair access” to the distribution grid.
Rooftop solar
The city’s Department of Buildings, the playbook says, should enable owners of large buildings to purchase renewable energy credits from owners of small buildings who install solar, which would help the large building owners comply with the city’s Local Law 97, which requires them to reduce their buildings’ greenhouse gas emissions.
To speed electrical inspections for solar projects, the playbook says the Department of Buildings should either enable self-certification of projects, or authorize the use of special inspection agencies.
The playbook recommends detailed action items for each recommended policy. In two programmatic strategies, it recommends launching public education campaigns to promote clean energy adoption and acceptance, and scaling up solar-plus-storage at city-owned buildings.
Distributed solar and storage “will play a critical role” in the mayor-elect’s commitment to affordability, the report says. “These technologies lower energy costs for families, improve resilience against outages, and advance climate goals – all while creating good-paying jobs in New York City.”

India Tenders 1 Gw Of Pumped Storage To Bolster Grid-Scale Energy StorageFrom ESS News
Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI), a public sector company of the Indian government and the nation's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has announced a new pumped storage initiative for sites across the widespread country.
SECI has started accepting bids to develop 1 GW/8 GWh, or an eight-hour pumped storage capacity resource aimed at providing large-scale, on-demand energy storage services to power distribution companies and other buying entities.
Bidders may quote a minimum cumulative capacity of 100 MW/800 MWh and a maximum of 1 GW/8 GWh, with all projects designed for eight hours of storage. Developers with existing or under-construction pumped storage projects and untied capacity are also eligible, with provisions for extended power purchase agreement tenures.

Taiwan On Track To Deploy 31.2 Gw Of Solar By 2035Taiwan is on track to reach 31.2 GW of solar by 2035, according to figures from UK consulting company GlobalData.
The island is expected to add 1.1 GW of solar this year, taking cumulative capacity to 15.4 GW. GlobalData is then projecting annual growth additions between 1 GW and 2 GW over the analyzed period, helping Taiwan to surpass 20 GW of solar in 2029 and 30 GW in 2035.
This growth trajectory would see solar extend its position as Taiwan’s leading form of renewables. The island’s total renewable power capacity is on course to reach around 50.7 GW by 2035, up from 19.1 GW in 2024, with solar accounting for over 61% of the 2035 figure.
GlobalData said Taiwan’s solar growth will be supported by rooftop deployment programs, floating solar projects and utility-scale installations. The country completed its phase-out of nuclear power in May this year and is now shifting its focus to expanding renewable energy and flexible gas-fired generation to replace lost baseload supply. Gas-based power capacity is expected to increase from around 20.1 GW in 2024 to approximately 40.9 GW in 2035, according to GlobalData's figures.
Mohammed Ziauddin, power analyst for GlobalData, said that Taiwan’s policy focus has intensified on solar, energy storage, offshore wind and grid upgrades in order to maintain system reliability while meeting the rising industrial electricity demand of a fully isolated power system.
“Offshore wind and solar PV are reshaping the generation mix, while gas remains essential for reliability in an isolated and import-dependent system,” Ziauddin explained. “This balanced pathway supports Taiwan’s net-zero ambitions while safeguarding power system resilience through 2035.”

Tata Power Renewable Completes 1 Gw Dcr-Compliant Pv Project For SjvnFrom pv magazine India
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commissioned SJVN’s 1 GW DCR-compliant solar power project in Rajasthan. This milestone represents the largest solar project commissioned by TPREL to date and one of the most expansive renewable energy developments in India.
All 2.4 million modules used in the project have been manufactured at TP Solar’s solar cell and modules manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli.
Spanning the Bandarwala and Karnisar Bhatiyan sites in Bikaner, the project is designed to deliver clean, reliable power across multiple states. The project’s capacity is allocated to serve key state utilities, including 500 MW for Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Ltd. (RUVITL), 300 MW for Jammu & Kashmir Power Ltd. (JKPL), and 200 MW for Uttarakhand Power Corp. Ltd. (UPCL).
In its first year of operation, the project is expected to generate approximately 2,454.84 million units of green electricity and offset nearly 1.74 million tonnes of CO₂, making a significant contribution to national decarbonisation goals.
“The project stands out for its robust engineering and innovative execution, having been delivered in one of India’s most challenging environments, with temperatures soaring to 50°C in peak summers and dropping to as low as 3 C in winters, compounded by difficult terrain and restricted vehicle movement,” stated TPREL. “Despite these constraints, TPREL ensured timely and safe completion through the deployment of advanced DCR-compliant cells and mono bifacial DCR modules, precision ramming techniques, and high-performance inverters engineered to operate efficiently under extreme heat.”
With this commissioning, TPREL’s total renewable utility-scale capacity has reached 11.6 GW, including 4.9 GW executed as third party EPC. Currently, 5.8 GW of Tata Power’s own capacity is operational, comprising 4.7 GW solar and 1.1 GW wind. An additional 5.8 GW is under various stages of implementation, evenly split between 3 GW solar and 2.8 GW wind projects, expected to be commissioned over the next three to 24 months in phases.

Ørsted completes sale of 50 per cent stake in 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind project Ørsted has completed the divestment of a 50 per cent stake in the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm to funds managed by Apollo, following an earlier announcement in
. The transaction establishes joint ownership of the project and shared responsibility for future construction payments.
The total value of the deal is around DKK 39 billion, of which approximately DKK 20 billion is payable at closing. This includes a share purchase component of about DKK 10 billion and an initial construction payment of a similar size, with the remaining amount linked to future construction milestones. Total investment in the Hornsea 3 project remains in the range of DKK 70–75 billion.
Ørsted will remain responsible for the construction of Hornsea 3 under a full-scope engineering, procurement and construction contract. The company will also operate and maintain the wind farm from its East Coast base and provide electricity balancing services, as well as a long-term route to market for the power produced.
Hornsea 3 has a planned capacity of 2.9 GW and is located around 160 kilometres off the Yorkshire coast. Once operational, the wider Hornsea zone, comprising Hornsea 1, 2 and 3, is expected to exceed 5 GW of installed offshore wind capacity.

Gujarat Notifies Three Clean Energy Policies To Establish 100 Gw Of Re Capacity By 2030The Gujarat government has rolled out three renewable energy (RE) policies to establish 100 GW of RE capacity by 2030. These are namely, the Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025, the Pumped Storage Project Policy and the Green Hydrogen Policy with aim of building an integrated renewable energy ecosystem and attracting investments of around Rs 5 trillion.
According to the state government, the pumped storage projects are projected to attract investments of about Rs 750 billion. Under the Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025, Gujarat has set a target of establishing 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. A key feature of the policy is the introduction of rooftop wind projects, allowing consumers to install mini and micro wind turbines of up to 50 kW capacity on rooftops or within their premises.

Waaree Energies Expands To 20.17 Gw Manufacturing Strength As Mnre Approves 16.444 Gw From Chikhli FacilityWaaree Energies Limited has strengthened its position as a leading player in India’s solar manufacturing sector with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) releasing its updated Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). The new listing reflects a significant expansion in the company’s approved capacity. According to the latest MNRE notification, Waaree’s manufacturing plant in Chikhli, Gujarat, has been listed with an ALMM-approved capacity of 16.444 GW. When combined with the capacity of Indosolar, this brings Waaree’s total solar module manufacturing capacity in India to 20.17 GW.
This development marks an important step in the company’s efforts to scale up domestic production to meet growing demand for high-quality solar modules. The revised ALMM list also features several new high-efficiency module models manufactured at the SG Chikhli facility. These include G12R TOPCon, G12 TOPCon, and G12 HJT modules. Icra Reports India’S Electricity Demand Set For Strong Fy2027 Recovery, Backed By 31.2 Gw Renewable Additions In Fy2026Rating agency ICRA expects India’s electricity demand to pick up again in the financial year 2026-27, projecting growth of 5 to 5.5 percent. This marks a recovery from the much slower expected growth of 1.5 to 2 percent in FY2026. The power sector continues to play a central role in supporting India’s economic expansion, especially as the country works toward a more sustainable and stable energy system.
Recent data shows early signs of improvement in electricity demand. Between December 1 and 25, 2025, all-India power demand increased by 5.1 percent year-on-year, with daily usage averaging 4.4 billion units. This rebound was supported by seasonal factors and follows a sharp decline of 0.8 percent in November and a 6 percent contraction in October 2025.
Sharing ICRA’s outlook, Ankit Jain, Vice President and Co-Group Head of Corporate Ratings at the agency, noted that the expected recovery in FY2027 aligns with strong activity in the renewable energy sector. He highlighted that India added 31.2 GW of renewable capacity in the first eight months of FY2026—an annual increase of 109 percent—driven by a healthy project pipeline and lower solar module prices.
However, he also pointed out that the pace of new project auctions slowed, with only 8.6 GW bid out in the same period due to delays in signing power purchase and power sale agreements. Jain emphasised that transmission infrastructure remains a critical area of focus, as grid curtailments during peak renewable generation hours reveal the urgent need for better storage capacity and stronger transmission networks. These developments will be key areas to watch in FY2027 to ensure the sector maintains its growth momentum.
On the supply side, the sector is witnessing strong activity, mainly led by renewable projects. From April to October 2025, India added 29.8 GW of new power generation capacity, more than double the 12.5 GW added during the same period in the previous year. This surge was largely the result of developers rushing to commission projects before the complete waiver of interstate transmission system charges expired on June 30, 2025. Overall, net capacity additions for FY2026 are expected to reach around 46 GW, significantly higher than the 33 GW added in FY2025, supported by a strong renewable pipeline.
Electricity demand growth has varied widely across states in FY2026. Gujarat recorded the highest growth at 8.5 percent, followed by Karnataka and Bihar at 6.5 percent each. In contrast, major states such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal saw minimal growth, all close to or just above 1 percent. Several states experienced a drop in demand, including Haryana (-4.0%), Punjab (-6.2%), Rajasthan (-2.1%), Uttar Pradesh (-3.4%), Madhya Pradesh (-2.0%), and Telangana (-2.5%). This uneven trend has been influenced by a high base in the previous year and adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, which affected consumption patterns.
Overall, the outlook suggests that while short-term challenges persist, India’s electricity demand is expected to regain strength in FY2027, supported by rapid renewable capacity additions and ongoing efforts to upgrade transmission and grid infrastructure.

Global Solar Generation Topped 540 Gw In April, Says SolcastA new analysis from Solcast data scientists using Microsoft's Global Renewables Watch dataset offers a detailed look at solar generation across the planet in 2025. Drawing from a model based on Microsoft’s satellite-derived database of 86,410 commercial PV assets worldwide, the Solcast API was used to simulate hourly production data for the entire calendar year. The study reveals the global peak of solar output occurred on April 29 at 06:00 UTC, reaching an estimated 540 GW, and highlighting seasonal variability and geographic patterns in solar output. These findings are based on a large scale data analysis completed using Solcast irradiance data and the Solcast API.
To build this global generation model, Solcast applied a set of regional assumptions to Microsoft's high-resolution satellite segmentation of PV assets. These market-based assumptions included estimates for each system's capacity, azimuth, tilt, efficiency, and ground coverage ratio. Where possible, these estimates were cross-referenced with grid capacity data and scaled to national installed capacities to improve the robustness of capacity estimates and include behind the meter generation. The Solcast API was then queried to simulate hourly generation profiles for each site, producing an extensive global dataset of solar output.
The model shows that global solar generation reached its peak on April 29, 2025. At 06:00 UTC, modelled generation peaked at 539 GW, marking the most productive hour of the year for solar assets worldwide. This time of day aligns with solar noon in India, early afternoon in China and East Asia, and morning in Central Europe, collectively representing many of the world’s largest solar-producing regions. The surrounding dates May 1, May 3, and May 11 saw similar peaks all at similar time of day, reinforcing that late April and early May likely delivered the most favorable combination of daylight and clear-sky conditions across key global markets. Total daily generation on April 29 reached approximately 6 TWh, roughly one-tenth of global daily electricity consumption. In contrast, daily generation dipped below 3 TWh during the Northern Hemisphere winter, with January registering the lowest totals.
Beyond peak output, the dataset also illustrates the extent of solar generation variability. Using a metric that identifies days with national generation deviating more than 25% from seasonal averages, Solcast highlighted the degree of inter-day variability faced by grid operators. The most stable solar outputs can be observed to be associated with climatically stable regions, most typically arid areas, and in in countries with geographically dispersed solar fleets, such as India, Australia, the United States, and Brazil, where regional weather differences tend to average out. Still, the occurrence of high-variability days across all regions underscores the importance of accurate short-term forecasting in balancing grids dominated by variable renewables.

Poland Projected To Reach 59.1 Gw Of Solar By 2035Poland is on course to reach 59.1 GW of cumulative solar capacity by the end of 2035, according to analysis by UK consulting company GlobalData.
GlobalData said it expects Poland to add 3.7 GW of solar in 2025, taking total capacity to 24.9 GW. The consultancy is forecasting around the same amount of solar will be deployed in 2026, 2027 and 2028, with annual deployments of 3.7 GW and 3.8 GW, before the figure begins to drop slightly. This trend is expected to continue into the early 2030s, with annual deployments slowing to 3.2 GW and 3.1 GW by 2034 and 2035.
This trajectory would see Poland surpass 30 GW of solar in 2026, 40 GW in 2030 and 50 GW in 2033, before being less than 1 GW away from 60 GW threshold by the end of 2035.
During this time period, solar is expected to increase its position as Poland’s leading form of renewables. GlobalData’s figures indicate solar will account for almost 65% of the 91.5 GW of renewables in Poland’s electricity mix in 2035.
GlobalData said Poland’s solar growth will be driven by utility-scale project development, continued expansion of distributed generation and auction-based support mechanisms under the country’s Renewable Energy Sources Act.
Mohammed Ziauddin, a power analyst at GlobalData, added that Poland’s updated National Energy and Climate Plan is providing long-term visibility for renewable deployment, while investments by the state-owned transmission system operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. are critical to integrating higher volumes of variable generation into the power system.
While coal still plays a significant role in Poland’s power system today, GlobalData’s analysis adds that coal-based generation is expected to decline steadily over the next 10 years, falling from around 32.2 GW in 2024 to around 20.5 GW in 2035.
Ziauddin concluded that Poland’s power sector is moving toward a more diversified generation mix, with solar and wind reshaping the system as coal capacity declines. “This approach strengthens supply security and supports Poland’s long-term decarbonization objectives,” he said.

China Commissions World’S Largest 1 Gw Open-Sea Offshore Solar ProjectChina has fully commissioned the 1 GW HG14 offshore PV project, developed by Guohua Investment under China Energy Investment Corp. (CHN Energy), off the coast of Dongying, Shandong province.
The plant achieved full-capacity grid connection in late December 2025 and occupies roughly 1,223 hectares of shallow coastal waters, 8 km from shore, with depths of 1 meters to 4 meters.
The installation is China’s first gigawatt-scale fixed-pile offshore PV project and the first offshore solar facility approved under a national three-dimensional sea-use rights framework. Total investment is reported at about CNY 8.1 billion ($1.2 billion).
HG14 comprises 2,934 steel PV platforms measuring 60 meters by 35 meters each, supported by 11,736 steel piles. The fixed-pile design ensures stability against wind, waves, tides, and seasonal sea ice, addressing key engineering challenges for northern coastal offshore solar deployment.
The plant uses over 2.3 million 710 W n-type bifacial modules mounted at a 15-degree tilt. Project data indicates offshore conditions raise generation efficiency by 5% to 15% compared with comparable onshore systems, aided by lower temperatures and sea-surface reflectivity.
Electricity is transmitted via a 66 kV subsea cable system combined with onshore cabling to a 220 kV substation. A co-located 100 MW/200 MWh energy storage system enhances grid stability and dispatch flexibility. The transmission design is reported to increase capacity by 20% while reducing unit costs by 15%.
HG14 is expected to generate about 1.78 TWh annually, meeting roughly 60% of electricity demand in Kenli district, avoiding 1.34 million tons of CO₂ emissions and saving more than 500,000 tonnes of coal. The project also integrates aquaculture under a “PV-above, farming-below” model, enabling dual use of marine space and additional revenue streams.
