thyssenkrupp Steel has signed four power purchase agreements (PPAs) to secure around 230 GWh of green electricity to support the decarbonisation of its steel production. The agreements have been concluded with Quadra Energy, Statkraft, Centrica Energy, and Sunnic Lighthouse. The electricity will be sourced from a mix of onshore wind farms and newly commissioned solar projects located across Germany that are no longer covered by state subsidy mechanisms.

The contracted green power will meet the electricity requirements of subsidiaries including thyssenkrupp Rasselstein, thyssenkrupp Precision Steel, and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel. Additionally, the procurement of this renewable electricity is expected to avoid more than 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

thyssenkrupp Steel’s Hohenlimburg subsidiary has been receiving renewable power from a nearby wind farm in Hagen-Hohenlimburg since 2024 through a dedicated 3 km cable connection. This arrangement reportedly represents the first instance in Germany of direct wind power supply to an industrial consumer. At least 30 per cent of the electricity supplied to the three aforementioned thyssenkrupp Steel subsidiaries will now be sourced from renewable energy, supporting the production of steel used in packaging, transformers, electric motors, and precision applications.
