Australia: South Africa-based Trafo Power Solutions has designed and delivered a turnkey mobile substation solution to an opencast mining operation in Queensland, Australia, highlighting the company’s growing strength in export markets.
According to Managing Director David Claassen, the project involved the supply of a robust skid-mounted transformer substation that steps up generated power from 400 V to 6.6 kV. The mobile unit is designed to move easily with the customer’s generator set as operations shift around the mine site.
The 2,000 kVA substation includes both low voltage and medium voltage switchgear, offering a simple plug-and-play solution. Claassen explains that this allows the unit to be relocated quickly without the need for time-consuming cable terminations. To support mobility, the skid is fitted with dragging hooks and push bars for accurate positioning.
Given the harsh operating environment, special attention was paid to managing high vibration levels. Components were rigidly mounted for durability, with anti-vibration measures included in the design. Compliance with Australian national standards was also a key requirement.
“The design was completed in line with Australia’s specifications, which we know well from previous projects,” says Claassen. “The customer also requested equipment commonly used in the local market, to ensure reliable technical support after commissioning.”
This flexibility reflects Trafo Power Solutions’ adaptable design approach, which can meet different national standards while incorporating customer-preferred equipment, particularly for low voltage protection and monitoring systems.
Despite the distance involved, inspections and witness testing remained a priority. Using remote communication technologies developed during the Covid period, the customer was able to complete factory acceptance testing to their satisfaction.
Claassen says the contract reflects the company’s evolution from a transformer supplier into a full turnkey electrical power solutions provider, supported by strong in-house design and engineering expertise.
