, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority and Maryland Department of Transportation officials this morning were set to break ground on a $705 million project to build a new train maintenance facility and make other upgrades at the Ivy City Rail Yard in Washington, D.C.

The project is designed to support the introduction of Amtrak's new state-of-the-art

Airo trains

set to enter service on the Northeast Corridor in 2027, Amtrak officials said in a media release.

When completed, the new facility will speed up train maintenance and reduce turnaround times, which should result in more reliable and frequent train service, Amtrak officials said.

The project is funded entirely by the Federal Railroad Administration.

A Clark-Herzog Joint Venture has been awarded the contract to design, construct and renovate new and existing facilities at the yard, which also supports Amtrak Northeast Regional, the state-supported Amtrak Virginia service, Acela, long distance and commuter trains that operate out of the yard.

Work will be conducted in phases, with full project completion expected in 2030, according to Amtrak.
