Hitachi Rail and Easier have secured a contract from Colas Rail to provide the TransCity ticketing system for Abidjan’s first metro line in Côte d’Ivoire. The project aims to enhance mobility in the region and ease congestion in the metropolitan area, which currently depends on a single bus network.

The TransCity system will be designed to support future interoperability with other transport networks in the city. The metro’s northern line is expected to enter partial service in 2027, with full commissioning scheduled for 2028.

Hitachi Rail’s ticketing solution is designed to simplify access and payment for transport services, making travel more affordable and efficient. It also helps transport authorities manage operating costs while enabling revenue-sharing between operators of interconnected systems. In Abidjan, the TransCity ticketing system will include mobile phone and QR code payment options, along with an advanced back-office platform.

The system will be supported by 330 access control swing gates across 20 stations, supplied by Easier, to regulate fares and passenger movement. Each station will also be equipped with ticket vending machines (TVMs), ticket office machines (TOMs), and portable vending units (PVUs).

This project further demonstrates Hitachi Rail’s expertise in ticketing solutions across Africa, adding to its portfolio of projects in Algeria, Senegal, Egypt, and South Africa.

“This contract marks an important step in our commitment to improving public transport in Abidjan. Our ticketing solution will offer passengers in Abidjan a more efficient, sustainable and accessible transport service, and in turn support the economic development of this region,” Jean-Marc Reynaud, VP Hitachi Rail RCS, stated.

“We are very proud to be contributing to this large-scale project, which marks a major turning point in urban mobility in Abidjan. This project follows on from our work on emblematic projects such as the Grand Paris Express in France, where we are supplying almost 1,200 access gates for the four future metro lines, and the Egyptian railways, for which we have installed more than 300 gates,” Alain Combette, Easier Sales Director, added.
