Swissport Leads Global Eco-Friendly Technology And Fleet Electrification With Around âŹ1.5 Billion Investment Over 5 Years
As part of its ongoing fleet renewal strategy, Swissport has purchased more than 1,000 new hybrid and electric GSEs over the past 18 months which are being deployed across 28 countries. Over the next five years, the company is planning to invest over âŹ1.5 billion to double down on its efforts to achieve its ambitious target of 55% electric GSE by 2032.  âWe are delivering on our sustainability commitments with concrete actions,â says Warwick Brady, President & CEO of Swissport International. âThis investment in eco-tech is a decisive step and reflects our industry-leading position on sustainability and innovation. Over the next five years we will be building the worldâs largest electric GSE fleet. Our strong commitment to clean energy also supports our airline customersâ climate goals by helping to reduce global supply chain emissions.â  Swissport operates the largest GSE fleet in the world, with approximately 14,500 motorized units and itâs the largest purchaser of new electric equipment. With this scale, the company is uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change in airport operations. The current rollout raises Swissportâs share of electric GSE to 25.0% globally, with strong progress in key European hubs and a clear roadmap for continued acceleration. Switzerland stands out as a showcase of progress: all three Swiss airportsâZurich (43%), Basel (51.4%), and Geneva (59.4%)âare on track to reach the 55% electrification benchmark by the end of 2025.  At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, all support vehicles have been fully electric since February 2025. In the UK, Swissport has doubled its eGSE footprint over the past two years across all four major London airportsâHeathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton.  The newly deployed unitsâranging from electric baggage tractors and belt loaders to passenger steps and pushback tractors âare being introduced in collaboration with top-tier manufacturers under long-term agreements. These partnerships ensure sustained equipment availability, consistent quality, and optimal operational performance. Swissport is also working closely with airport authorities to facilitate the rollout of supporting infrastructure, including charging stations and power supply optimization.  The transition to electric not only reduces carbon and particulate emissions but also enhances operational efficiency and reliabilityâdelivering multiple benefits to airlines, airports, and employees. These include quieter, more comfortable vehicles, lower maintenance costs that boost equipment availability, increased automation potential, and enhanced safety through advanced features such as anti-collision systems.  As Swissport expands its electrification program across all regions, the company remains committed to close collaboration with airport partners, regulators, and manufacturers. With a clear investment roadmap and ambitious targets, Swissport is setting new standards for efficiency, safety, and environmental performanceâhelping shape a more sustainable future for aviation ground operations.  RENEWABLE ENERGY  In addition, Swissport is committed to advancing renewable energy use across its global air cargo operations as part of its sustainability strategy. Our cargo warehouses in Barcelona and Madrid now run entirely on renewable energy, cutting CO2 emissions by 305 tons annually. In Nairobi, a 100 KW solar grid installed in 2017 powers 35% to 40% of the energy needs for perishable cold rooms, supporting critical temperature-sensitive logistics with clean energy. Frankfurtâs warehouse features the largest photovoltaic system at the airport, generating over 1.5 million kWh of sustainable solar power each year. These initiatives demonstrate Swissportâs dedication to reducing environmental impact and driving the green transition within the air cargo industry.  TOP RANKING  Swissportâs credentials have been recognized internationally. It is the only global aviation services provider to have received Platinum status by EcoVadis, placing it among the top 1% of companies globally for sustainability performance. EcoVadis is a global sustainability ratings platform that evaluates firms on their environmental, social and governance performance (ESG). It provides scorecards and rankings based on how well companies integrate sustainability into their business practices.

Indy Airport Officially Breaks Ground On New $205.8 Million Hotel
Officials mark major milestone in development of new Westin hotel âThe original plans for the Midfield Terminal complex included a terminal-connected hotel, and through the years weâve proceeded with careful and strategic planning to ensure the right build at the right time to increase the value of the airport to the public and increase our contribution to the Central Indiana economic landscape,â said Mario Rodriguez, IAA executive director. City officials and community leaders joined Rodriguez and IAA Board President Barbara Glass in the ceremonial shovel event, signifying the hotel development is officially underway. Approximately 200 guests from throughout the city attended the event and received ceremonial vials of dirt to mark the occasion. Rodriguez said the new hotel will serve as âthe front door to the front door,â welcoming travelers from around the globe to the Best Airport in North America â and surrounding them with the world-class customer experience the Indy airport is known for. Glass said that in addition to the elegance and grandeur the hotel will add to the terminal campus, it will also deliver an economic impact. âThe hotel will help cement the Indy airportâs reputation as âThe Best Airport in North Americaâ for decades to come,â said Glass. âThis hotel will not only be an iconic addition to the airport, but itâs the biggest investment directly benefiting the traveling public since the new terminal itself was built, and it will also be a revenue and job generator for Indianapolis.â In February, the IAA board approved the project and respective contracts, setting the project budget at $205.8 million and ratifying the project for bond funding. Over the past four years, the IAA has gone through iterations of financial analysis and then fully designed the hotel to have a detailed budget to design, build, inspect, furnish and operate the hotel.  Elegant design with customer-experience top of mind The Westin Indianapolis Airport hotel will feature 253 guest rooms, along with a full-service restaurant, serving three meals per day, a fitness center, a 7th-floor bar and lounge area, an approximate 10,000 square-foot meeting space, a pedestrian passage through the hotel to the airport garage, and hotel-specific parking with valet option. Hotel guests who also join the Marriott Bonvoy program, which is a free-to-join loyalty program, can experience benefits like free Wi-Fi, discounted rates, and the ability to earn points toward free nights and other rewards. With approximately one-third of passengers flying out of the Indy airport before 9 a.m. and coming off record-breaking passenger traffic, this new hotel will give weary travelers a convenient overnight option to save time before their early morning flight, with elevated amenities compared to a 45-minute to an hour drive. Construction Underway Construction of the new hotel has begun. Currently, the construction barricade fencing is transformed into a playful art exhibit, thanks to the creative talents of Greenfield artist and Red Nose Studio founder Chris Sickels. Key milestones in the coming weeks also include rerouting the pedestrian pathways from the Park & Walk and employee parking lots. CSO, Inc., developed the construction drawings for the hotel, which included architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and interior design services. Shiel Sexton Company, Inc., developed the construction program and guaranteed maximum price. Wischermann Partners, Inc. is the hotel operator and assisted CSOâs design team with overall programming of the hotel. âWe are looking forward to becoming an integral part of the world-class Indianapolis airport travel experience,â said Paul Wischermann, president and chief executive officer of Wischermann Partners. âWe both share a relentless commitment to excellence, human connection and guest experience.â The IAA anticipates the new Westin Indianapolis Airport hotel will be completed in December 2027.

Port Authority, Realterm And Worldwide Flight Services Celebrate Opening Of New $270 Million State-Of-The-Art Consolidated Cargo Handling Center At John F. Kennedy International Airport
New Facility Streamlines Operations, Reduces Truck Congestion and Supports Growth of High-Value Cargo Sector JFKâs Cargo Operations Support More Than 93,000 Direct and Indirect Jobs and Generate More Than $11 Billion in Economic Activity Annually First Step in the Port Authorityâs Redevelopment of Airportâs North Cargo Area to Modernize and Consolidate Cargo Handling Centers Photos from the Opening and of the New Facility are Available Here  The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in partnership with Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), today celebrated the opening of a new state-of-the-art $270 million consolidated cargo handling center at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). As the first new cargo facility at JFK in 25 years, this new cargo center will consolidate operations from four separate cargo zones into a single modernized location, reducing congestion, streamlining operations and unlocking space for future development. The JFK air cargo sector plays a vital role in the regional and national economy, supporting more than 93,000 direct and indirect jobs and generating $11.4 billion in economic activity annually. The new consolidated cargo handling center enhances JFKâs role as a premier hub for global trade and is expected to generate new jobs and economic development opportunities while improving service for industries reliant on high-value cargo such as pharmaceuticals, electronics and perishables. âWe are in the midst of historic overhauls across all of our airports, and this new cargo center is yet more proof of the transformation that is underway,â said Port Authority Chairman Kevin OâToole. âThis new consolidated cargo center reduces truck congestion, lowers emissions and creates good-paying jobs, all while supporting the industries that power the region and the nation.â âBy replacing outdated facilities with a modern cargo center, weâre preparing for the future and improving efficiency and sustainability at JFK,â said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. âJFK plays a central role in global commerce, and this modern consolidated cargo center strengthens its position as a key gateway for high-value goods and international trade.â Operated by WFS, JFKâs primary cargo handler, the 350,000-square-foot facility spans 26 acres and replaces two older facilities. The new cargo center is the first step in the Port Authorityâs broader redevelopment plans for the airportâs north cargo area to accommodate recent and future long-term cargo growth through modern and efficient cargo facilities. Consolidation of cargo facilities in the north area aims to reduce congestion, improve logistics flow, and free up land for future development needs at the airport. In the United States, JFK is the nationâs busiest entry point for low-value international e-commerce packages, handling about one-quarter of all such incoming shipments, as well as a key high value international cargo hub. In 2024, JFK handled 1.67 million tons of cargo, a 5 percent increase from 2023 and 25 percent more than in 2019, making it the eighth-busiest cargo airport in the U.S. and 21st globally. Several innovations in the new cargo center are expected to streamline the airportâs cargo operations, reducing wait times for truck drivers and minimizing queuing outside the facility. These include an advanced truck dock management system designed to optimize the flow of goods in and out of the facility, leveraging real-time scheduling, automated check-ins, and digital communication between drivers and dock operators. The system automatically allocates the most efficient doors based on the size, type, and contents of each delivery, maximizing throughput and reducing delays. The system also ensures that trucks arrive only when a dock is available, greatly reducing idle wait times and on-site congestion. This coordination ensures that fewer trucks are on the road or waiting in nearby neighborhoods, leading to reduced noise, emissions and traffic congestion for the surrounding community. The new consolidated cargo handling center also includes 3,000 square feet of cooler space for goods requiring 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius environments, making it JFKâs first dedicated on-airport facility for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and perishables. The facility also sets a new benchmark for sustainability, advancing the Port Authorityâs industry-leading commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to facilitate the same goal for its operational partners. The new cargo handling center features electric forklifts, electric vehicle chargers, and an automated unit load device system to optimize power usage. âWe are thrilled to see this project come to life as a showpiece for cargo operations not just at JFK, but for airports worldwide,â said David Rose, managing director of Realterm. âThis modern and one-of-a-kind facility exemplifies what can be achieved through strong public-private partnerships and demonstrates Realtermâs commitment to creating infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of the air cargo industry while supporting local economic development.â âWFS is proud of its 41 years of service to our customers at JFK,â said Mike Simpson, Gateway Services chief executive officer, Americas, at WFS. âThis new facility marks a new era for WFS and air cargo at one of the main gateways to the United States. This cutting-edge facility reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence in our drive to serve customers better. This new development sets new standards for efficiency and safety and is a showpiece not just for JFKâs aviation ecosystem, but to the air cargo industry worldwide. The facility embodies our dedication to connecting the world through logistics and embraces new levels of digitalization and sustainability that will act as a model for other new cargo operations around the world.â âQueens continues to grow and with it, so must our airports,â said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. âAs we invest nearly $20 billion into the redevelopment of Kennedy Airport, upgrading the facilityâs ability to handle cargo here in the nationâs biggest city, both by population and by economy, is just as important as adding new passenger amenities. With Building 260, weâre doing just that, and I couldnât be more excited to cut the ribbon on it today.â The project also exceeded its goals for participation by minority and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs), with more than 42 percent of construction contracts awarded to MWBE firms, creating significant economic opportunities for local communities. The new facility is expected to generate 100 permanent new jobs, with a priority on hiring from the airportâs surrounding community through ongoing and targeted local hiring events and outreach in partnership with the Council for Airport Opportunity and other workforce development organizations.
