oil-gasEuropean energy consortia have launched a critical two-month public consultation phase for the "BarMar" subsea pipeline, a key segment of the Mediterranean H2Med green hydrogen corridor designed to link Iberian renewable energy with northern European industrial hubs.
The consultation period, which began May 6, features 25 public discussions aimed at addressing the environmental and regional impacts of the pipeline’s construction.
Led by transmission system operators Enagás of Spain, alongside France’s NaTran and Teréga, the BarMar pipeline will stretch underwater from Barcelona to Fos-sur-Mer in France.
The infrastructure will feature specialized compression stations on both sides of the subsea crossing to safely propel the hydrogen payload.
BarMar is part of the broader H2Med trans-European pipeline network. The multi-billion-euro project also includes the "CelZa" pipeline, a corresponding overland link connecting Portugal and Spain.
Together, the network aims to tap into the Iberian Peninsula’s abundant wind resources and high solar irradiance to generate low-cost green hydrogen.
The pipeline network will serve as an energy artery, transporting this clean fuel to high-demand industrial centers in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
The infrastructure comes as Spain and Portugal prepare for massive upstream production.
Flagship green hydrogen developments are already slated for the peninsula, including Moeve’s 1-gigawatt hydrogen hub and the 500-megawatt Catalina project, a joint venture between Enagás and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
Recognizing its strategic importance to continental energy security and decarbonization goals, the European Union has designated H2Med as a Project of Common Interest.
The initiative has already secured €35.56 million (approximately $41.8 million) in direct funding through the Connecting Europe Facility to back development across both the BarMar and CelZa interconnectors.
Project leaders expect the ongoing public forums to streamline regulatory approvals and refine the construction roadmap as Europe accelerates its transition away from fossil fuels.
