The development of Germany’s hydrogen infrastructure reached a new milestone this week as the scoping process for the planned HYBOR hydrogen pipeline officially commenced across Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, and Thuringia.

The project, a 120-kilometer (75-mile) artery of the nation’s emerging energy grid, is being spearheaded by the network operator GASCADE.

As part of the broader "Flow – making hydrogen happen" initiative, HYBOR is designed to bridge a critical gap in the regional network, connecting existing pipelines slated for hydrogen conversion to industrial hubs and storage facilities.

With the primary goal being to define the breadth of environmental assessments required for the project’s subsequent planning approval, the current scoping phase serves as a collaborative effort between GASCADE, regulatory authorities, and public interest groups.

This stage builds upon preparatory work that began in late 2025. Field teams have been active along the proposed route, conducting ground investigations and mapping local flora and fauna.

By identifying site-specific conditions early, GASCADE aims to align technical requirements with environmental protection standards.

The pipeline is scheduled to run from Bobbau in Saxony-Anhalt through Saxony to Rückersdorf in Thuringia.

Once operational—with a completion target set for 2029—it will facilitate the reliable transport of hydrogen to a variety of industrial consumers, supporting the transition toward a climate-neutral energy supply in Central Germany.

Documentation from the current scoping and field investigations will be integrated into the formal planning approval procedure, which is expected to begin in 2027.

In a move toward transparency, GASCADE has announced a series of public information events scheduled for May 2026.

These sessions will allow residents and stakeholders in the affected federal states to review planning details and address concerns directly with the project team.

"The aim is to assess local conditions at an early stage and to align further planning responsibly," GASCADE stated in a release, emphasizing that the project is essential for securing the region’s future energy demands.
