PipeSense, a U.S.-based developer of pipeline monitoring solutions, announced the official launch of PipeTrack, a new sensor and signal-processing system designed to provide real-time visibility into pipeline pigging operations.

The technology aims to replace traditional tracking methodologies, such as Above Ground Markers (AGM), acoustic monitoring, and manual spot checks.

Unlike these conventional methods, which often require personnel to be stationed at various intervals above the pipeline, PipeTrack utilizes a series of pressure sensors installed at small-bore branch locations.

By integrating established leak detection software with AI-enabled data analysis, the system monitors pressure pulses generated as a "pig"—a device used for cleaning or inspecting the interior of a line—moves through the pipe.

This allows operators to determine the tool’s average speed and precise location from a remote, bespoke dashboard.

Stuart Mitchell, President and Chief Technology Officer at PipeSense, said the industry has long relied on outdated and ineffective tracking processes.

"Operators have long been overdue a solution that shakes up pig-tracking and meets the modern demands of the industry," Mitchell said.

"PipeTrack will help empower the industry with a field-proven and reliable solution that transforms time-consuming and resource-heavy manual efforts into an adept platform that offers live feedback."

According to the company, early field trials indicate that the system can reduce operational downtime and minimize personnel exposure in hazardous environments.

By maintaining a continuous view of the pig from within the pipeline, the technology addresses common safety challenges posed by lost or stuck equipment.

PipeSense, a subsidiary of pipeline construction specialist Charps, developed the hardware and software in-house over the last two years.

The company’s engineering team focused on creating a "set-and-forget" installation process that eliminates the need for teams to repeatedly move equipment along the pipeline right-of-way during a run.

The company is scheduled to demonstrate the PipeTrack technology at the upcoming 21st Pipeline Technology Conference in Berlin, where industry leaders will gather to discuss the future of midstream infrastructure.
