State-owned gentailer Synergy is seeking planning approval for the 2 GW Tathra renewable energy project that is to combine up to 500 MW of solar alongside 1 GW of wind capacity and 500 MW of battery energy storage in Western Australia’s mid-west region.
The development application released for comment by the Shire of Carnamah shows the estimated $4.5 billion (USD 2.95 billion) Tahtra project is proposed for an almost 16,000-hectare site near the small town of Eneabba, about 300 kilometres north of the state capital Perth.
In planning documents, Synergy says co-locating wind and solar generation on the same site will enable shared use of infrastructure, such as grid connections and substations, and reduce both environmental impact and project costs.
“By integrating wind, solar, and BESS, the project aims to maximise the value of the project site, reflect the outcomes of technical investigations, achieve construction economies of scale, and optimise the use of network and asset infrastructure,” it said.
Synergy said the integrated approach “delivers a more flexible, efficient, and reliable electricity supply” that supports Western Australia’s future renewable energy goals.
Western Australia’s remaining coal-fired power stations are set to be retired by 2030, and because the state’s grid is isolated, it relies on internal resources to ensure it has the system services, and storage needs, to meet demand requirements.
Synergy said the Tathra proposal will “contribute significantly to the state’s renewable energy future” and is part of its ongoing development of renewable energy assets, including the Kwinana and Collie battery energy storage systems, the 40 MW Greenough River Solar Farm, and a fleet of large-scale wind assets.
The Tathra project is expected to connect into the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS) via Western Power’s 330 kV Eneabba to Three Springs transmission lines that traverse the project site.
Whilst the specific design is yet to be finalised, Synergy said it plans to build Tathra in stages with the solar farm to comprise an estimated 1 million PV panels spread across approximately 1,000 hectares.
The panels will be installed in areas identified by landowners as of low agricultural value and Synergy said the design will allow for agricultural activities to continue after construction.
The development application for the project is now open for public comment. Synergy said the project will go through Western Australia’s Development Assessment Panel pathway given the value of the works and will also be referred to the state’s Environmental Protection Authority. It will also seek approval under the federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Synergy Seeks Approval For 2 Gw Tathra Renewable+Bess Project In AustraliaThe Australian state-owned company Synergy is seeking planning approval for the 2 GW Tathra renewable energy project in Western Australia’s Mid-West region. The project will combine up to 500 MW of solar capacity, 1 GW of wind power, and 500 MW of battery energy storage.
In its planning documents, Synergy explains that co-locating wind and solar generation on the same site allows for the shared use of infrastructure such as grid connections and substations, improving efficiency and reducing costs. The AUD4.5bn (USD2.95bn) Tathra project is expected to connect to the South-West Interconnected System (SWIS) via Western Power’s 330 kV Eneabba to Three Springs transmission lines, which cross the project site. The development application is currently open for public comment.
Synergy is also in the process of commissioning one of Australia’s largest battery projects, a 500 MW/2,000 MWh facility in Collie (Western Australia). This project adds to two large battery installations at the site of Synergy’s Kwinana gas generator (formerly a coal plant), which together total 300 MW/1,100 MWh of storage capacity.

Ørsted Signs Mous For A 1.4 Gw Offshore Wind Park In South KoreaThe Danish energy group Ørsted has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to support the development of its 1.4 GW Incheon offshore wind project, located approximately 70 km off the coast of Incheon, South Korea.
The first MoU was signed with Korea South-East Power (KOEN) to explore potential collaboration on the project’s development. Discussions will include KOEN’s possible involvement in areas such as project planning and investment.
Ørsted has also signed a separate MoU with POSCO Group, South Korea’s leading steelmaker. Under this agreement, the two companies will explore cooperation in multiple areas including the supply of high-strength steel for offshore foundations and towers, engineering and construction services, and potential equity participation. The partnership may also extend to project development, as well as offshore wind park operations and maintenance.
The Incheon project, which was originally granted a 1.6 GW Electricity Business License (EBL) in November 2023, was adjusted to 1.4 GW in March 2025 following stakeholder consultations. Ørsted has already completed site investigations as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and is now progressing with the EIA process and final design work. Subject to final investment decision, the Incheon project is expected to become one of the largest offshore wind parks in South Korea.

India Adds 20.1 Gw Of Renewables Capacity In April-August, Says IcraFrom pv magazine India
India added 20.1 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first five months of fiscal 2026 (April to August 2025), a 123% increase from 9 GW in the same period last year, according to a report by ICRA. The total includes 17.5 GW of solar and 2.6 GW of wind capacity.
ICRA said the record growth, driven by a strong project pipeline and favorable market conditions, positions the sector to exceed 35 GW of new capacity in fiscal 2026.
The momentum follows fiscal 2025, when renewable additions rose to 28.7 GW from 18.5 GW in fiscal 2024. The firm noted the expansion is supported by a pipeline of 142.8 GW, as reported by the Central Electricity Authority, alongside lower solar module prices and strong electricity demand.
Despite the robust pipeline, bidding activity has slowed, with only 3.4 GW auctioned in the first half of fiscal 2026. ICRA attributed the shortfall to delays in the signing of power sale agreements by state distribution utilities, which has in turn stalled power purchase agreements with winning developers. Timely execution of these contracts and expansion of transmission capacity were identified as critical to sustaining growth.
ICRA maintains a stable outlook for the sector, citing strong policy support, the tariff competitiveness of renewables, and rising sustainability commitments from commercial and industrial customers.
Sector developments
Cost competitiveness: ICRA expects the recent cut in Goods and Services Tax on solar PV modules and wind turbines—from 12% to 5%—to reduce capital costs by about 5%. This is projected to lower generation costs by about 10 paise per kilowatt-hour for solar and 15–17 paise per kilowatt-hour for wind.
Commercial and industrial demand: The commercial and industrial segment, which accounts for 45% to 50% of India’s electricity use, has a strong demand outlook. Achieving 20% renewable penetration over the next five years would require about 100 GW of new capacity, implying a compound annual growth rate of nearly 30%.
Energy storage: Bid tariffs for battery energy storage systems (BESS) have declined significantly, improving the economics of hybrid projects. ICRA expects storage requirements to reach 50 GW by 2030, met through BESS and pumped hydro.
Module pricing: Imported n-type module prices remained low at about 8 to 9 cents per watt in August 2025, while domestic modules cost 15 to 17 cents per watt due to the Approved List of Modules and Manufacturers (ALMM) policy. The planned extension of ALMM to solar cells in June 2026 is likely to push prices higher in fiscal 2027. ICRA also noted that recent US tariffs of 50% on Indian solar exports are expected to weigh on competitiveness.
Sector resilience: The sector’s credit profile remains resilient. In the first five months of FY2026, ICRA recorded 15 rating upgrades against 13 downgrades, supported by timely project commissioning, satisfactory generation performance, and ownership changes.

India Adds 44.2 Gw Solar Module And 7.5 Gw Cell Capacity In H1From pv magazine India
India added 44.2 GW of solar modules and 7.5 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity in the first half of 2025, according to Mercom India.
Tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) dominated module manufacturing capacity additions with 39.9 GW, followed by 3 GW of monocrystalline modules. For the first time, 1.2 GW of heterojunction (HJT) module capacity was added in the country. No new capacity was added for integrated solar wafer/ingot or polysilicon production.
Mercom attributed the expansion to India’s 186 GW pipeline of large-scale projects scheduled between 2025 and 2027, 2030 solar installation targets, and policy-driven demand for modules under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
As of the report’s release, cumulative module capacity under ALMM List-I reached 109.5 GW, while cumulative cell capacity under ALMM List-II stood at nearly 17.9 GW.
By June 30, 2025, monocrystalline technology accounted for 54.5% of total solar cell capacity, followed by TOPCon with 41.5% and polycrystalline with 4%.
Indian manufacturers have 181.6 GW of module and 86.1 GW of cell capacity under construction, expected to be commissioned by 2027. In addition, 97 GW of module and 84.7 GW of cell capacity have been announced and are projected to come online by 2030 or earlier.
“Although companies have announced large manufacturing capacities, actual operational capacities can be 30 to 40% lower,” said Raj Prabhu, CEO at Mercom Capital Group. “New module lines typically take several months to stabilize before reaching full utilization while smaller facilities continue to operate at lower levels, constrained by outdated technologies, lack of scale, and lower-wattage modules that are no longer in demand. This has led to fewer orders and accelerated consolidation, where only larger manufacturers with scale, efficiency, and credibility remain competitive. DCR module shortages will persist until domestic cell capacity increases.”
Gujarat remained the leading state for module production, accounting for 41.6% of national capacity as of June 2025. Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh followed with module production capacities of 12.8 GW and 11.5 GW. Gujarat also held the largest annual solar cell capacity at 47.3%.
In the first half of 2025, India imported 44.6 GW of solar modules and cells. Modules made up 34% of imports, while cells accounted for 66%.
Domestic manufacturers exported nearly 3 GW of modules and 83 MW of cells in the same period, primarily to the United States.
“Exports have also been hit hard. Shipments to the United States, which accounted for more than 95% of Indian module exports, have come to a halt after the recent 50% tariff,” Prabhu added.

Offshore Wind: From 83 Gw Today To 2,000 Gw By 2050 – EqIn Short : Global offshore wind capacity, now at 83 GW, is projected to expand to 2,000 GW by 2050. Driven by advancing technology, lower costs, and supportive policies, offshore wind will become a cornerstone of clean energy. This massive growth is expected to cut carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and accelerate the global transition toward sustainable power systems.
In Detail :Offshore wind capacity continues to expand, with global capacity growing to almost 83 GW in 2024. This indicates an opportunity to scale up deployment and strengthen offshore wind’s role in the global effort to triple renewable power capacity by 2030.
Meeting climate goals requires scaling offshore wind capacity to 500 GW by 2030. Looking ahead, the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), launched at COP27, committed to reach 2 000 GW by 2050. The target is ambitious, but IRENA’s analysis shows that it is feasible, and a new podcast episode with IRENA experts breaks down why:
Offshore wind technologies such as larger turbines and fixed-foundation designs are the most common type of installation. These technologies have advanced and become the most mature of the offshore renewables’ technologies, leading to cost reductions and making offshore wind a competitive energy source. Between 2010 and 2024, installed costs offshore wind declined by 48%, leading to a 62% decline in levelised costs of electricity (LCOE) over the same period, reaching USD 0.079/kWh in 2024. With LCOE and 115 countries having the potential to generate offshore wind energy, the technology has a strong business case to be scaled up.
Public-private collaboration is a key lever for accelerating the deployment of offshore wind. Multilateral initiatives like GOWA provide a global platform for collaboration and alignment between governments, industries, and local communities. Through GOWA, public and private sector actors across the offshore wind value chain join hands to support member countries in reaching 2 000 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050. Together, they address the major building blocks such as framework conditions, financial de-risking, system integration, and socio-economic benefits. This in turn, can accelerate the uptake of offshore wind globally.
AI and digital technologies can address the unpredictability and intermittent nature of offshore wind energy. Digitalisation enables real-time performance monitoring and smart maintenance based on weather forecast and analysis. For example, digital tools can enable predictive maintenance by analysing turbine data to prevent failures and optimise power output, reducing emergency repairs and downtime at offshore wind farms. These innovations can reduce operational costs by minimising unplanned downtime, and maximise power output by extending the operational lifetime of offshore wind turbines. This resulting efficiency makes offshore wind more attractive for investors.
Ultimately, the most important driver that can push the scale up further is enabling policy frameworks. Governments must put in place specific targets for offshore wind capacity, as done by over 30 member countries of GOWA. Specific targets outlined in national energy roadmaps and/or Nationally Determined Contributions signal opportunities for investors. When those roadmaps are supported by streamlined permitting protocols, governments can mobilise investments as investors’ confidence to support offshore wind projects become higher.

Totalenergies Sells Stake In Us Solar Parks (1.4 Gw) And Buys Us Gas AssetsTotalEnergies will sell a 50% stake in a 1.4 GW solar portfolio in North America to the US-based investment firm KKR, receiving US$950m from the transaction, which includes proceeds from both the sale and associated bank refinancing. The deal covers six utility-scale solar projects totalling 1.3 GW, along with 41 distributed generation assets with a combined capacity of 140 MW, primarily located in the United States. The power generated by these assets is either contracted to third-party buyers or will be marketed directly by TotalEnergies. Following the transaction, TotalEnergies will retain a 50% ownership in the 1.4 GW portfolio, which has an enterprise value of approximately US$1.25bn.
In a separate move, TotalEnergies will acquire a 49% stake in Continental Resources’ onshore gas fields in Oklahoma (United States). The company expects these assets to yield approximately 150 mcf/d (4.2 mcm/d or 1.5 bcm/year) of natural gas by 2030.
TotalEnergies is currently the largest buyer of US LNG, with purchases of 10 Mt/year. However, its domestic production remains modest: in 2024, its US upstream assets produced 93,000 boe/d, just 3.8% of the company’s global output, which is otherwise concentrated in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.

Brazil’S Distributed Solar Power Surges To 40 Gw By 2025 – EiaBrazil has seen a remarkable transformation in its electricity generation mix, with distributed solar power becoming the fastest-growing source of new capacity. Since 2019, the rise of distributed solar has driven the overall growth in Brazil’s electricity generation capacity. From less than 1 gigawatt in 2018, distributed solar generation expanded to 40 gigawatts by June 2025, accounting for 43% of all new capacity added during this period.
The foundation for this rapid growth was laid in 2012, when the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (ANEEL) introduced net metering policies. These policies allowed owners of small renewable generation systems to sell excess electricity back to the grid in exchange for billing credits. Initially, systems up to 1 megawatt in size, including solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and cogeneration, were eligible. In 2015, the capacity limit was raised to 5 megawatts for solar and most renewable sources, while small hydropower was capped at 3 megawatts. Further changes came in 2022 and 2023, when new regulations limited systems with storage to 3 megawatts but maintained the 5-megawatt limit for solar without storage.
Compared with distributed solar, utility-scale solar capacity has grown at a slower pace. By June 2025, Brazil’s utility-scale solar capacity stood at 17.9 gigawatts, much lower than the distributed segment. In total, solar generation accounted for 23% of Brazil’s overall electricity generation capacity at mid-2025, showing its rising importance in the country’s energy mix.
The adoption of distributed solar has been especially strong among households and businesses. By June 2025, more than 3.7 million renewable distributed generation systems had been installed across Brazil. Solar photovoltaic dominates this sector, making up 99% of total distributed generation, while small hydro and wind share the remaining 1%. Unlike centralized power plants that send electricity long distances through transmission lines, these distributed systems produce energy near the point of use, typically on rooftops or commercial buildings, reducing transmission losses and boosting local energy independence.
Certain states have emerged as leaders in distributed solar adoption. São Paulo leads with 5.8 gigawatts, followed by Minas Gerais with 4.9 gigawatts, Paraná with 3.7 gigawatts, Rio Grande do Sul with 3.4 gigawatts, and Mato Grosso with 2.6 gigawatts. São Paulo overtook Minas Gerais in 2022, supported by favorable state-level energy policies and tax concessions encouraging solar installations.
Brazil’s solar growth story shows no signs of slowing, though its exact pace remains uncertain. ANEEL data lists 122 gigawatts of planned utility-scale solar projects as of June 2025. However, only 6 gigawatts are under construction, highlighting a significant gap between announced projects and those moving forward.

Final Green Light For 2.1-Gw Soo Green Transmission Line In Iowa (Us)SOO Green, a 2.1-GW transmission project jointly developed by energyRe and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), has secured approval of its final municipal franchise agreement, clearing the way for construction in Iowa (US).
The merchant transmission project will link the PJM Interconnection and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), delivering a mix of wind and solar power, balanced with energy storage, via a 525-kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line. The line will be buried underground along existing railroad rights of way.The bi-directional line will run between Mason City, Iowa, and Yorkville, Illinois, with converter stations located at each end. The project will operate under PJM’s control, enabling the grid operator to supply power into MISO during periods of extreme weather.
In additi on to its developers, the project’s key partners include Germany’s Siemens Energy, U.S.-based Jingoli Power and PPL Corp., and Italy’s Prysmian Group. Construction could begin as early as 2027, with commercial operations targeted for 2031.

China’S Solefiori To Build 6 Gw Hjt Solar Module Factory In Saudi ArabiaZhuhai-based SoleFiori Technology (Hongjun New Energy) has signed an agreement with its Saudi Arabian partners to set up a 6 GW HJT solar module factory in Saudi Arabia.
The new facility will supply high-efficiency HJT modules optimized for desert conditions. Although the exact site and equity split were not disclosed, the project is positioned as a regional hub serving Saudi Arabia and neighboring markets.
SoleFiori said its HJT modules offer bifacial performance above 95%, boosting energy yield by harvesting reflected sunlight, and a low temperature coefficient that ensures output stability in extreme heat.
The deal reflects Riyadh’s push to build a domestic clean energy supply chain under Vision 2030. The strategy targets 40 GW to 58 GW of installed solar by 2030 and requires that 75% of components be locally manufactured.
For SoleFiori, the Saudi plant expands its global footprint and hedges against tariff risks by embedding manufacturing closer to demand. For Saudi Arabia, it accelerates technology transfer, job creation, and industrial diversification.
More broadly, the Gulf is emerging not only as a solar deployment hotspot but also as a manufacturing hub. Chinese producers are shifting from exporting modules to building local capacity, a structural change that may rebalance global PV supply.
SoleFiori follows a wave of Chinese investment in Saudi Arabia’s solar sector. In July 2024, JinkoSolar formed a joint venture with Renewable Energy Localization Co. and Vision Industries to build a 10 GW cell and module plant. TCL Zhonghuan that same month announced a 20 GW ingot and wafer factory with the same partners.
