UK: Denmark’s NKT has secured the biggest contract in its history, winning a cable package valued at almost $2.7 B (£2 B).
The agreement covers the design, manufacturing and installation of a 525 kV HVDC system for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) power cable project in the UK. The contract was finalised this week by project partners National Grid and SSEN Transmission.
The project will require the production and installation of about 675 km (420 mi) of cable, both offshore and on land. Once completed, the new connection is expected to deliver clean and affordable electricity to as many as two million homes.
Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT, described the agreement as an important step for both the company and the UK power system. “Signing the contract for EGL3 is a significant milestone for NKT and for the reinforcement of Great Britain’s power system,” he said.
“With our proven expertise in HVDC technology, we look forward to delivering the power cable system that will strengthen the grid and help ensure a cleaner and more reliable energy supply,” concluded Westerlind.
According to NKT, the EGL3 project represents the largest investment of its kind in electricity transmission ever undertaken in the UK and is expected to greatly improve grid reliability and performance.
The 525kV HVDC link will enable renewable electricity generated in northern Scotland to be efficiently transported to regions in the south where demand is higher.
