State-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has picked Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group to build the 2 GW Dukhan solar power project.
An agreement for the construction of the project, to be located 80 kilometers west of Doha, was signed between the two parties earlier this week. Samsung C&T has said that the project is the largest solar power plant ever to be built by a Korean construction company.
The 2 GW Dukhan project, first announced in September 2024, is to be developed in two phases. The first phase is expected to add 1 GW of solar to the grid by the end of 2028, with the second phase scheduled for completion by mid-2029.
QatarEnergy’s solar portfolio features the 800 MW Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, which began operations in 2022, and an 875 MW project across Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, also built by Samsung C&T, which was switched on earlier this year.
“When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al Kharsaah, Mesaieed and Ras Laffan solar power plants will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand,” said Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy.
Qatar’s cumulative solar capacity stood at 1,860 MW at the end of 2024, according to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The country has set a target of deploying 4 GW of renewables by the end of the decade.

South Africa Cancels A 3 Gw Gas-Fired Plant In Richards BaysThe South African Supreme Court of Appeal has cancelled a government permit allowing the state-owned power utility Eskom to build a 3Â GW CCGT gas-fired power plant in Richards Bay, after the company failed to properly consult affected communities. Eskom will have to restart the approval process for the projects after conducting public consultations.
Initiated in 2019, the project has been dormant since then, due to the opposition of environmental groups. A LNG import plant was also proposed in Richards Bay, but has been also cancelled in 2024, as well as several other gas-fired plants.
Eskom owns and operates 15 coal power plants with a capacity of 40 GW, 1 nuclear plant (1.9Â GW Koeberg), 4 gas/oil fired plants (2.4 GW), 5 hydropower plants (3.3 GW, including 2.7Â GW of pumping stations), and 1 wind power plant (Sere, 100 MW).

Netherlands Unveils €1Bn Plan For 2 Gw Of Offshore Wind In 2026The Dutch government has presented its Offshore Wind Energy Action Plan, allocating nearly €1bn from the national Climate Fund to support the development of 2 GW of new offshore wind capacity in 2026.
Back in May 2025, the government postponed tenders for two offshore wind parks due to worsening market conditions affecting the sector. However, these projects were not cancelled and will be re-tendered later.
In the longer term, a draft law is being prepared to introduce contracts for difference (CfDs), while the action plan also includes the creation of a guarantee fund to facilitate long-term power purchase agreements.
Previously, in 2024, the Netherlands delayed its target to expand offshore wind capacity from 4.7 GW to 21 GW — pushing the deadline from 2030 to the end of 2032 — citing rising costs and supply chain constraints.

Cps Energy Acquires 1.6 Gw Of Natural Gas Power Assets In Texas (Us)CPS Energy and PROENERGY have signed a definitive agreement under which CPS Energy will acquire four gas-fired power generation facilities with a combined electric capacity of 1.6Â GW in Texas (United States), for approximately US$1.4bn, subject to customary net working capital adjustments. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025.
The assets, located within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)Â market, include recently constructed peaking gas-fired power plants situated in Harris, Brazoria, and Galveston Counties. The acquired assets are capable of operating on dual fuels, allowing for a potential future transition to a hydrogen blend, which could lead to lower CO
2
emissions.
In addition to the acquisition, CPS Energy and PROENERGY have entered into Operations and Maintenance (O&M)Â and Total Care Services Agreements (TCSA). Under these agreements, PROENERGY will continue to staff, operate, and maintain the facilities, ensuring their safe, efficient, and reliable operation.

China Completes 1 Gw Solar-Wind-Storage Complex In Qinghai DesertChinese state-owned rolling stock manufacturer CRRC has switched on a 700 MW photovoltaic plant in Delingha, Qinghai province, in northwestern China.
The project was tendered by Chinese authorities in 2022. Construction began in August 2024, and grid connection was completed in May 2025.
It is linked to the network of State Grid Corporation of China and forms part of a hybrid renewable energy complex that also includes a 300 MW wind farm. Total investment reached CNY 3.5 billion ($492.7 million).
Chinese module supplier Trinasolar delivered its Vertex N 700W+ TOPCon products for the solar facility.
“Trinasolar’s Vertex N 700W+ modules were selected for proven performance in various challenging desert environments worldwide, demonstrating high reliability and energy yield,” the company said in a statement. “They have undergone stringent reliability tests, including thermal cycling, mechanical stress sequence, and UV exposure tests, ensuring consistent performance under extreme conditions.”
The complex also integrates 100 MW/400 MWh of battery storage to help stabilize renewable output.

Dukhan 2 Gw Solar Project To Push Qatar Toward 2030 Renewable Energy TargetsQatarEnergy has awarded Samsung C&T Corp the contract to build the 2-gigawatt (GW) Dukhan solar power project, a move aimed at doubling Qatar’s solar energy capacity and supporting the country’s renewable energy targets for 2030.
The contract was signed by QatarEnergy and Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group at a ceremony in Doha, with attendance from government and corporate officials.
The Dukhan solar facility, located approximately 80 kilometres west of Doha, will be developed in two phases of 1,000 MW each. The plant will incorporate advanced solar tracker systems and inverters capable of operating efficiently in Qatar’s high-temperature conditions.
The first phase is expected to begin supplying electricity to the Kahramaa grid by the end of 2028, while the second phase is slated for completion by mid-2029. Upon completion, the project will contribute to QatarEnergy’s broader objective of achieving more than 4,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, highlighted the environmental benefits, stating, “The Dukhan solar power plant, along with the Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar projects, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4.7 million tonnes per year and meet up to 30% of Qatar’s peak electricity demand.”

India’S Power Capacity Hits 495 Gw With 25 Gw Solar Added By August 2025India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy sector as it works to balance rising energy demand with climate commitments. By August 2025, coal remained the largest source of electricity, contributing 43.75 percent of the country’s total installed power capacity. At the same time, renewable energy, led by solar and wind, is becoming an increasingly important part of India’s power mix and is growing at a remarkable pace.
In the first eight months of 2025, India added 25,265.41 MW of new solar capacity, reflecting the strong momentum in this segment. This growth has been supported by government measures such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers, which ensures that quality standards are maintained for solar modules and boosts local manufacturing. Under this framework, India achieved 123 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity by August 2025, a milestone that underlines the country’s effort to strengthen domestic production and cut down reliance on imports.
By the end of August 2025, renewable energy sources accounted for 38.85 percent of India’s total installed power capacity. Solar has been the largest contributor to this growth. The country’s installed solar capacity stood at 123.130 GW, representing 63.96 percent of the total renewable capacity. Solar now contributes 24.85 percent to the overall power mix, marking an annual increase of 44.06 percent compared to the previous year. This clearly shows how fast solar projects are being deployed across India.
India’s total installed power capacity reached 495 GW by August 2025, recording an annual growth of 9.94 percent. Despite the strong rise of renewables, coal-based power still provides nearly half of India’s electricity, highlighting the challenges of shifting fully toward clean energy. As more renewable capacity, which is variable in nature, is added to the system, issues such as grid stability and reliable supply remain critical for the power sector.
The growth of renewable energy is also delivering socio-economic benefits. Solar and wind projects are creating employment opportunities, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. These projects are helping local economies, improving electricity access, and driving development in remote areas, which is enhancing the overall quality of life for many communities.
Another important aspect is the strengthening of India’s energy security. By increasing renewable energy use, the country is reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, thereby limiting the impact of sudden swings in global fuel prices. At the same time, advances in energy storage and grid technology are making renewable power more reliable and easier to manage.
Global market changes are also creating opportunities for Indian solar manufacturers. The overall picture shows that while India faces challenges in fully moving away from coal, the steady expansion of renewables, especially solar, reflects the country’s commitment to building a cleaner, self-reliant, and secure energy system that also supports economic growth.

Saudi Arabia Seeks Bidders For 5.3 Gw Of Solar And Wind CapacityThe Saudi Power Procurement Company has issued a Request for Qualification (RFQ)Â for the seventh round of solar and wind projects under the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), which is overseen by the Saudi Ministry of Energy.
This round aims to add a total of 5.3Â GW of renewable energy capacity to the national grid. On the solar side, the projects include four photovoltaic independent power producers (IPPs), namely the 1.4Â GW Tabrjal project, the Mawqaq and Tathleeth projects (600Â MW each), and the 500Â MW South Al-Ula, located in the Al-Jouf, Hail, Aseer, and Madinah regions respectively. Additionally, two wind IPPs are planned in the Madinah region, with capacities of 1.3Â GW (Bilghah)Â and 900Â MW (Shagran).
These new projects align with Saudi Arabia’s broader NREP target of achieving 58.7 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030—including 40 GW of solar and 16 GW of wind. At the end of 2024, the country had installed over 91 GW of capacity, predominantly fossil fuel‑based, with only about 4.7 GW coming from renewable sources.

India’S Solar Power Surges Past 123 Gw, Driving Renewable Energy Growth In 2025India has made remarkable progress in renewable energy, with solar power emerging as the leading contributor. By the end of August 2025, the country had installed 123,130.13 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity, which makes up more than 63.96 percent of its total renewable energy portfolio, excluding large hydro projects. This growth has been supported by falling solar panel prices, technological improvements, strong policy measures, and greater awareness about clean energy.
Between January and August 2025, India added 25,265.41 megawatts of new solar capacity. In August alone, installations touched 4,113.59 megawatts, recording a 3.46 percent increase compared to July. Wind energy also continued to expand, with 541.1 megawatts added during the same month. These numbers highlight India’s determination to scale up clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Government policies have played a critical role in this transformation. The Production-Linked Incentive scheme has encouraged domestic solar manufacturing, while the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers policy has ensured better quality standards. Reintroduced on April 1, 2024, this policy requires government projects to use only certified solar modules. From June 1, 2026, the same requirement will apply to solar PV cells, ensuring improved reliability and efficiency across projects.
As of August 2025, India’s renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydro, stood at 192.517 GW. Solar and wind together contributed nearly 175.81 GW, or over 91.32 percent of this total. Ground-mounted solar remains the largest segment, with 93.90 GW installed, while rooftop solar has grown to 20.85 GW, gaining popularity among households, businesses, and industries. Rooftop systems are being adopted widely for cutting electricity bills and offering more energy independence. In addition, solar-wind hybrid projects have reached 3.26 GW, improving land use and transmission efficiency.
Off-grid solar systems are also making an impact, particularly in rural areas where they replace diesel generators and provide reliable energy access. These include solar lanterns, solar water pumps for agriculture, and local mini-grids. Their combined capacity has crossed 5.12 GW, reducing costs for rural users and cutting pollution.
However, challenges persist. Acquiring suitable land for large solar parks is increasingly difficult, and integrating higher volumes of solar power into the grid requires better transmission infrastructure and modern balancing technologies. Without these, fluctuations in supply could pose risks to stability.
Global developments are also shaping India’s solar journey. Recently, higher U.S. import duties on solar modules redirected many suppliers to India, boosting module availability and lowering costs. This shift has supported faster capacity growth, providing additional momentum for India’s renewable energy targets.
With rapid installations, supportive policies, and rising investments, India is consolidating its position as one of the world’s leading renewable energy markets. The strong push in solar and wind shows that the country is moving steadily toward its clean energy goals, even as it works to resolve land and grid integration challenges.

Rystad Energy Says Kuwait’S Renewable Capacity To Reach Just 3.3 Gw By 2030, Falling Short Of 15% Electricity TargetKuwait is facing growing challenges from extreme heat, aging power infrastructure, and frequent unplanned outages, prompting major investments to improve the country’s electricity grid. At present, renewable energy makes up less than 1% of Kuwait’s electricity generation. The government has set a target to increase that share to 15% by 2030, with natural gas serving as a key transitional fuel.
However, analysis by Rystad Energy suggests this goal may not be achievable within the planned timeline. Their projections indicate that Kuwait’s renewable capacity is likely to reach only 3.3 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, representing about 7% of power generation. A more realistic milestone would be 15% by 2035, when renewable capacity is expected to exceed 11 GW and account for around 20% of Kuwait’s electricity mix.
Kuwait currently has 21 GW of installed power capacity, but only about 17 GW is reliably available during the hottest months. Aging plants and planned maintenance reduce capacity at the time when it is most needed. With summer temperatures reaching as high as 50 degrees Celsius in recent years, demand for electricity peaked at 17.7 GW in July. The strain on the grid forced scheduled power cuts to begin two months earlier than the previous year, while unexpected outages added further pressure, resulting in shortages of more than 1.5 GW during peak demand in May.
Natural gas is expected to play a central role in Kuwait’s energy transition. Rystad Energy forecasts that gas-fired power generation will grow by 17%, reaching 77 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2030. To support this growth, gas production is projected to rise by 38%, while overall gas demand is expected to increase by 30% over the next five years. The increased demand will be met through a combination of expanded domestic production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
To secure supply, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) has signed a 15-year LNG sale and purchase agreement with QatarEnergy, providing up to 3 million tonnes per year of LNG. Additionally, Kuwait plans to build five new large-scale gas-fired power plants, adding 18 GW of capacity. This will raise the country’s total gas power capacity from the current 14 GW to more than 32 GW by 2035.
Nishant Kumar, Analyst, Renewables & Power Research, Rystad Energy, stated, “Blackouts in Kuwait have underscored the strain on the country’s power system, making imports unavoidable if such outages persist. As Kuwait modernizes and turns to renewables to address these challenges, high-profile events like the 2025 Iberian outage have raised questions about the reliability of renewable energy.
Still, it would be myopic to dismiss the capabilities of renewables outright. Kuwait has plans to invest heavily in solar PV, for instance, benefiting from a natural advantage of more than 3,300 hours of sunlight each year. This abundant sunlight supports PV output of 4.6 to 4.9 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per kilowatt-peak per day, helping to meet peak afternoon demand when electricity use is highest.”
A major objective of this strategy is to reduce Kuwait’s reliance on oil for power generation, which currently accounts for 40% of its energy use. By replacing oil with gas in the electricity mix, Kuwait can free up more crude oil for export, which remains the cornerstone of its economy and government revenues. Shifting toward gas will help secure export earnings, stabilize public finances, and meet growing domestic energy needs.
Kuwait’s annual gas demand is currently between 24 and 25 billion cubic meters (Bcm), with the power sector being the largest consumer. Approximately 40% of this demand is currently met through LNG imports, while about 35% comes from associated gas production. This dependence on associated gas ties supply to OPEC+ crude production levels, making it vulnerable to output cuts.
To reduce this risk, Kuwait has invested in non-associated gas development, including both onshore and offshore exploration. Significant progress has been made, with non-associated gas now providing nearly 600 million cubic feet per day—about 25% of total demand. All of this supply currently comes from the onshore Jurassic project located in northern Kuwait, which has become a critical part of the country’s energy strategy.

Statkraft Sells 1.5 Gw Of Renewables In India To Serentica RenewablesThe Norwegian energy company Statkraft has signed an agreement to sell part of its Indian renewable energy portfolio to India’s Serentica Renewables. The deal includes approximately 1.5 GWp of assets in the state of Rajasthan (northern India), comprising the recently commissioned 445 MWp Khidrat solar plant and a pipeline of solar and wind projects totalling around 1 GWp, currently at various development stages. The transaction is subject to standard conditions precedent and regulatory approvals. In 2024, Statkraft had announced plans to exit the Indian market to refocus its investments on Europe and South America.
Statkraft, active in India since 2004 through its joint venture SN Power, has developed a diversified renewable portfolio across hydro, solar, wind, and power trading. Meanwhile, Serentica Renewables, supported by US$650m from the US-based investment firm KKR, has reached 1 GW of capacity, combining solar, wind, and storage across several Indian states.

Centrica And X-Energy Plan 6 Gw Fleet Of Modular Reactors In The UkThe UK-based energy group Centrica and X-Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of the US advanced nuclear reactor technology group X-Energy Reactor Company, have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to deploy X-Energy’s Xe-100 Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs) in the United Kingdom. As a first step, the companies have identified EDF-Centrica’s Hartlepool site as the preferred location for the initial deployment of a planned UK fleet of up to 6 GW of Xe-100 reactors.
A potential deployment of twelve Xe-100 units at Hartlepool could deliver up to 960 MW of new nuclear capacity. The new facility would be built adjacent to the existing Hartlepool nuclear power station, which is currently scheduled to cease operations in 2028. The site is already designated for new nuclear development under the UK Government’s National Policy Statement, and the proposed power plant could also provide high-temperature heat to support nearby heavy industries.
Centrica will contribute initial capital for project development, with the aim of launching full-scale activities in 2026. Subject to regulatory approvals, the first electricity generation from the new reactors is expected by the mid-2030s.
