TransPennine Express has completed a major biodiversity upgrade at Yarm Station, transforming underused railway land into thriving wildlife habitats while creating a greener, more welcoming environment for passengers and the local community.

The project has seen thousands of native bulbs planted across station embankments, alongside the creation of new wildflower meadows designed to support pollinators and other animals.

In addition, 70 metres of native hedgerow and 14 tree species have been introduced, boosting the biodiversity of the area.

Bird and bat boxes have been installed on trees across the station site, providing valuable foraging and breeding opportunities.

Existing woodland areas have also been carefully managed to allow ground flora to flourish, improving the overall health and diversity of the station’s natural environment.

Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead at TransPennine Express, said: “It’s fantastic to see the design plans come to life at Yarm Station, with all works now complete in time for plants to flourish and bloom during spring 2026.

“Not only do these biodiversity improvement projects benefit local wildlife, but they also improve the station environment for our customers and local communities by creating attractive green spaces that everyone can enjoy.”

The scheme is part of the train operator’s Good for Nature goal, which aims to improve biodiversity across its stations.
