The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have expanded funding for Ukrainian state railway UZ to strengthen the energy supply. The EU is supporting an EBRD loan of EUR 180 million signed in December 2024 with an investment grant of EUR 44 million under the Ukraine Investment Framework. This will enable UZ to finance the supply and installation of decentralised gas-fired generation capacity of up to 200 MW at selected locations in Ukraine. The aim is to mitigate power cuts resulting from ongoing attacks on the energy infrastructure and to secure supplies to households, companies and rail transport operations. A further EUR 3 million from the EU grant will go towards establishing a dedicated UZ Academy for training and the reintegration of veterans. Separately, the EBRD has provided a grant of EUR 10 million for short-term modernisation works at the stations in Kyiv and Lviv. The funding will be used for step-free access and energy-efficient lighting to improve disabled-accessible conditions and safety.
