Inland Rail has lifted the new Broadford-Wandong Road bridge into place at Wandong, Victoria, marking an important milestone for the Beveridge to Albury (B2A) project.

The new, higher bridge has been installed to allow sufficient clearance for double-stacked freight trains on the line.

Prefabricated in Adelaide and assembled onsite, the bridge is made up of 41 main and cross girders and measures 35 metres long and 14.5 metres wide.

Weighing approximately 246 tonnes, the entire bridge was lifted into place by a 600-tonne mobile crawler crane.

When the bridge is open to traffic later this year, a new shared user path across it will provide a safer link for pedestrians accessing new community spaces and gardens.

There will be an improved Rail Street intersection with a new roundabout and wider lanes.

The existing Broadford-Wandong Road bridge will be demolished after the new bridge opens.

Russell Hamilton, Inland Rail Beveridge to Albury Project Director, said: “The installation of the bridge is an exciting milestone for the project.

“Once complete, it will provide a much safer crossing for pedestrians, with the shared user path separated from the traffic.

“We would like to thank the Wandong community for their ongoing patience and support while these important works are carried out.”
