MUTP-3 includes major infrastructure upgrades such as:
MRVC Ltd., a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra, is implementing these works on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis between the Centre and the State.
Expanding Multi-Tracking Corridors:
Extensive multi-tracking work has already been sanctioned and initiated across major sections:
Similarly, on the CSMT–Panvel corridor, the 5th and 6th lines have been sanctioned between CSMT and Kurla, with work progressing between Kurla and Parel. Additional lines are already operational on the CSMT–Kurla–Vasai–Panvel stretch.
These developments are designed to reduce congestion, increase train frequency, and enhance punctuality across one of the world’s busiest suburban rail networks.
Boosting Capacity with Rolling Stock:
To further enhance capacity, 238 rakes of 12-car trains have been sanctioned under MUTP-3 and 3A at a cost of Rs. 19,293 crore. This expansion is expected to significantly increase passenger handling capability and reduce overcrowding during peak hours.
