The

Morristown and Erie Railway

(M&E) yesterday unveiled its commemorative locomotive to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States at the railroad’s headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey.

Originally built as Southern Railway MP15DC, the locomotive was renamed M&E 26 in honor of the anniversary year. During the winter of 1779-80, George Washington established his headquarters in Morristown, less than half a mile from M&E’s headquarters; No. 26 is marked with the phrases “Washington Headquarters” and “Crossroads of the Revolution” to mark Morristown’s role in U.S. history, M&E officials said in a press release.

M&E 26 will enter regular freight service across the railroad’s system while representing the railroad during America 250 celebrations throughout the year.

Meanwhile, Mendocino Railway’s California Western Railroad, known as the

Skunk Train

,

has debuted its own Locomotive 1776 to honor the nation’s anniversary and the railroad as a symbol of progress.

The locomotive, emblazoned with the United States flag and a bald eagle, will lead most trains from Fort Bragg. The design was inspired by notable past patriotic railroad displays, including the Freedom Train of 1948.

“Railroads have always played an important role in the American story,” said Robert Jason Pinoli, president and CEO of Mendocino Railway. “As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, Locomotive 1776 serves as a reminder of where we’ve been, how far we’ve come and the enduring spirit that continues to move our country forward.”
