railwayThe latest edition of Rail Director Magazine has gone live, bringing readers a range of features on this month’s key theme, Train Operating Companies (TOCs).
At a time of “great change and considerable opportunity” for Britain’s TOCs, the May issue highlights their achievements, challenges, and future plans.
International rail is also entering a new phase of growth – and in this month’s cover story, Gwendoline Cazenave, Chief Executive Officer at Eurostar, discusses the journey ahead.
As Gwendoline puts it: “Demand has never been stronger. We’re seeing a real shift in how people want to travel, and that gives us huge confidence in the future of international rail.”
Last year, Virgin Trains was given the green light to compete with Eurostar, using the Temple Mills International Depot in London. Gwendoline also comments on this move in her article, which is available to read in full here.
The future looks similarly bright for Transport for Wales (TfW), which has been named the most improved operator in the UK for a third consecutive period. Marie Daly, Chief Operating Officer of TfW, reflects on this success in her article. She goes on to discuss the operator’s new tram trains, local T Network groups, and her work as Chair of Women in Rail.
The packed May issue of Rail Director Magazine also features a special section on Transport for London (TfL). In it, the Transport Commissioner Andy Lord outlines TfL’s new four-year business plan, and Director of Rail Trish Ashton discusses the popular Elizabeth line, now in its fourth year. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, meanwhile, writes about the importance of the railway, and reflects on its far-reaching impact.
Looking beyond operators, Nigel Wordsworth reports from the 2026 Young Rail Professionals (YRP) Annual Dinner and Awards. The Railway Industry Association has also released its Rail Industry Supplier Excellence Awards shortlist for 2026; find the full list here.
Editor Danny Longhorn said: “It’s a time of great change for TOCs, but also one of considerable opportunity. Organisations already operating under the Department for Transport Operator are beginning to see the benefits of closer collaboration, with improvements in customer numbers and train punctuality.
“The stories in May’s edition reflect the great work being delivered, and shine a light on the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
