Construction for the new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney International Airport line is well underway as the first tracks have been laid at Luddenham.

The first portion of track has been installed north of a new rail bridge set to carry metro services over the yet-to-be-constructed M12 motorway, with track laying currently taking place towards St. Marys.

In total, more than 6,400 tonnes of rail steel are set to be laid along the 23km line between St Marys and Bradfield by mid-2026, with the final track planned to span just under 107km of rail line with 76,285 sleepers.

With work on the track steadily underway, construction on the installation of six stations for the new line has also begun, with final design plans for each station now finalised.

Installed by a team of up to 60 workers; all rail steel utilised in the portion’s construction has come from South Australia, with each piece of steel having been welded together at a rail laydown yard in Luddenham South before being transported to a location along the alignment for full installation.

The new Western Sydney International Airport is set to open in 2026.
