Systra Wins Major Design Contracts For Six Underground Stations In Patna Metro Rail Project

SYSTRA has secured new detailed design assignments for key underground sections of the Patna Metro Rail Project in Bihar. The contracts reinforce the company’s expanding footprint and long-term involvement in India’s urban transit sector. Meanwhile, PMRCL’s regular site inspections and review meetings are sustaining construction momentum and supporting timely project delivery.

Introduction:

SYSTRA has further strengthened its presence in India by winning new detailed design consultancy assignments for the Patna Metro Rail Project, a transformative urban infrastructure initiative in Bihar. The latest win builds on SYSTRA’s earlier work on simulation studies and detailed design consultancy, reaffirming the confidence of Indian authorities and partners in the company’s technical expertise.

Patna, home to nearly 2.5 million residents, is among India’s fastest-growing urban centres. The Patna Metro is envisioned as a sustainable, high-capacity transport system that will ease congestion, reduce emissions, and significantly improve daily mobility across the city.

Scope of the New Assignments:

Under the new contracts, SYSTRA will work for Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) on behalf of Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL). The assignments cover two critical underground packages of Line 1 (Red Line):

These underground stretches will connect Mithapur Ramp to Rukanpura Ramp through twin tunnels and six underground stations. SYSTRA’s responsibilities include the complete design of all six underground stations, their entry and exit structures, and associated facilities such as ancillary buildings.

The underground section is considered one of the most complex parts of the Patna Metro, given dense urban surroundings and the need for precise engineering. SYSTRA’s role is therefore central to ensuring safety, efficiency, and constructability.

Building on Previous Experience:

This latest mandate follows earlier simulation and design consultancy work carried out by SYSTRA’s Indian teams on the Patna Metro. The continuity of assignments highlights the firm’s growing role as a trusted partner in India’s metro expansion program and its deep understanding of local conditions, standards, and project requirements.

With extensive global experience in metro systems, SYSTRA brings international best practices while adapting solutions to Patna’s specific urban and geotechnical context.

Sustainability and Multimodal Integration:

A key objective of the Patna Metro is to provide a sustainable alternative to road-based transport. The Red Line will pass through the heart of the city, connecting densely populated neighbourhoods and enabling seamless integration with major transport hubs.

The metro will offer direct links to railway stations and the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT), encouraging multimodal travel and reducing dependence on private vehicles. This integration is expected to cut travel time, lower pollution levels, and enhance overall urban livability.

Project Monitoring and Institutional Oversight:

While SYSTRA’s design assignments form the core development, project implementation is being closely monitored by PMRCL. Shri Sandeep Kumar R. Pudkalkatti, Secretary of the Urban Development and Housing Department and Managing Director of PMRCL, has conducted multiple site inspections and review meetings.

He recently reviewed construction progress at key locations such as Mithapur, Jaganpura, and Ramkrishna Nagar, interacting with project teams and emphasizing adherence to timelines, safety, and quality standards. These visits underline the state’s commitment to disciplined execution.

Strengthening Coordination and Delivery:

In addition to site inspections, comprehensive review meetings chaired by the PMRCL Managing Director, along with officials and the DMRC team, have focused on construction, systems, and operational readiness. Clear directions have been issued to fast-track the remaining priority corridor stations and maintain strong coordination across all project verticals.

Such institutional oversight complements the technical work being delivered by consultants like SYSTRA, ensuring that planning, design, and execution remain aligned.

Conclusion:

SYSTRA’s new design assignments mark a significant milestone for the Patna Metro, reinforcing technical confidence and project continuity. Supported by active monitoring from PMRCL, the metro project is steadily advancing toward delivering a modern, sustainable, and integrated urban transport system for the people of Patna.
