The Madrid Metro will invest EUR 104 million in equipping the new stations included in the extension of Metro Line 11. The contract covers the installation of 29 elevators, 60 escalators, fire protection systems, overhead power lines, and other essential equipment for the first section of the network’s future diagonal axis.

The Madrid Regional Government will invest EUR 104 million in equipping the new metro stations included in the extension of Line 11, one of the most important development projects for the public transportation network in Spain’s capital.

The regional government has reviewed the proposal for awarding the contract, which is 15% lower than the initial tender budget of EUR 123 million.

The investment is managed by the Department of Housing, Transportation, and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid and aims to complete the necessary equipment for the first section of the future diagonal metro line, between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal.

The contract includes the installation of 29 elevators and 60 escalators in the new stations on Line 11.

The project also calls for the installation of a comprehensive fire protection system, the overhead catenary, and other equipment essential for the line’s operation.

Regional authorities note that these works require separate planning from the civil construction works due to the technical characteristics of the installations.

The Community of Madrid presents the reduction in the contract value compared to the initial budget as an optimization of public funds, without compromising the quality, safety, and functionality standards established for this strategic infrastructure.

At the same time, work continues on the first section of the Line 11 extension, between Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal.

This section will be 6.7 km long and is now more than 45% complete.

The future stations Comillas and Madrid Río are nearly 60% and 58% complete, respectively, while work also continues at the Atocha, Palos de la Frontera, and Conde de Casal connection points.

The section is scheduled to enter service in 2027, with the regional authorities maintaining this timeline.

Work recently reached a new technical milestone with the connection of the two excavation fronts between the future Comillas and Madrid Río stations.

The operation took place following the arrival of the Mayrit TBM and allowed for the completion of the tunnel linking the two points, passing under the M-30 urban highway to connect the two banks of the Manzanares River.

This stage is considered one of the most important since the start of construction and marks the halfway point of the project for the first section of the extension.

The Mayrit tunnel boring machine began its journey on March 26. So far, the machine has excavated 1,116 meters—equivalent to 21% of the planned route—and has installed 656 rings that form the tunnel’s permanent lining.

Manufactured in Germany and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the tunnel boring machine advances at an average rate of 15 meters per day, with occasional peaks of up to 30 meters per day.

The Extension of Line 11 is presented by Madrid authorities as the project that will transform this line into the major diagonal axis of the metro network.

The new infrastructure is expected to improve connections between neighborhoods and new urban developments, reduce travel times, and limit the number of transfers.

At the same time, the project should help relieve congestion on other crowded lines, particularly Line 6, known as the Circular, the most heavily used line in the Madrid network.

The authorities specifically mention the section of Line 6 between Plaza Elíptica and Avenida de América, where the extension of Line 11 is expected to relieve some of the existing pressure.

Work on this project began in November 2022, and the first section is scheduled for completion in 2027.
