Road & BridgeVictoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project has now removed 92 congested and dangerous crossings, following the removal of the level crossing at Ferris Road in Melbourne’s West.
The removal of the Ferris Road level crossing has cleared the way for traffic to flow across the new Ferris Road bridge in Melton, which is situated over the old rail line.
The level crossing removal means the 16,000 vehicles that use the crossing each day will no longer be waiting 28 minutes at the boom gates in the morning peak.
It follows a three-week construction blitz, with crews working around the clock to finish building the road bridge and separated pedestrian and cycling path over the rail line.

This also comes as the new, modern and accessible Melton Station will open in September. Longer nine-car VLocity trains will be able to stop at Melton Station one year ahead of schedule – boosting capacity by 50 per cent on peak services, from next year.
The new transport hub will improve connections between trains, buses and parking, while a new station underpass will provide a new rail line crossing.
The new station has been future proofed for the planned electrification of the Melton Line, enabling Metro services to use two of the platforms in the future. These electric trains are set to be housed at the Cobblebank stabling yard, which is being built east of the station.
Melton is not yet fully level crossing free. Two more crossings are on track for removal this year at the Coburns and Exford roads.
The Victorian Government is aiming to remove 110 level crossings by 2032.
