On the east side of Tobishima Pier, the draft at R2 Berth will be deepened from 12 metres to 15 metres, alongside seismic retrofitting and other structural improvements.

New gantry cranes will also be installed at the berth. Separately, land behind W93 and W94 Berths will be developed to expand loading and unloading areas.

As part of efforts to build what the Authority describes as a high-standard, high-performance container logistics base, the NPA will exchange views with relevant parties on investment projects for facility development and improvement, to formulate development policies for the port’s next generation of container terminals.

The Authority also plans to hold discussions with private business operators to streamline port and harbour logistics formalities, and to gather information on new technologies and initiatives both in Japan and internationally, including AI systems designed to support terminal workers and Physical Internet concepts.

The plan states the Authority will assess the challenges facing such approaches alongside their potential benefits.

The NPA said it will continue sharing information and holding discussions with the Japanese government and private operators with the stated aim of raising productivity across the port’s container terminals.
