A magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28 has prompted safety inspections at regional steel facilities and disrupted transport networks across southern Kyushu.Osaka Steel confirmed that all employees at its West Japan Kumamoto plant in Uto are safe. Inspections of buildings, production equipment and steel inventories remain underway, with no fires or secondary incidents reported. The plant was already closed for scheduled summer maintenance, limiting the immediate impact on steel production.

The facility manufactures rebar, round bars and angles and is southern Kyushu’s only electric arc furnace-based steel plant. Another regional producer, Kyushu Maruichi Steel Tube, resumed normal operations after completing temporary inspections.

However, damaged expressways, railway disruptions and problems at Yatsushiro port could delay ferrous scrap deliveries and finished steel shipments. Emergency repairs have restored limited access, but regional logistics remain under pressure.Automotive production has also been affected, with Honda, Aisin and Toyota Motor Kyushu temporarily suspending some operations. Japan’s overall steel supply impact is expected to remain limited, although market conditions will depend on infrastructure recovery and Osaka Steel’s final inspection results
