SteelOutokumpu Stainless USA has selected Primetals Technologies to supply a 180-ton twin ladle furnace for its stainless steel plant in Calvert, Alabama. The installation will replace a ladle treatment stand commissioned in 2012.The upgrade is designed to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint, improve temperature control and provide greater operational flexibility. Electrical heating capacity added after the argon oxygen decarburisation converter will also support more efficient stainless steel processing.
Primetals Technologies will supply mechanical equipment, automated argon lancing, hydraulic systems, Level 1 automation and its Melt Expert electrode control system. The technology is expected to improve process stability and furnace productivity while lowering energy consumption.
Outokumpu’s Calvert facility can melt up to 100% stainless steel scrap through an electric arc furnace before further refining. The new twin ladle furnace will use the plant’s existing layout and foundation, supporting smoother integration and limiting major structural changes.Commissioning is scheduled for March 2028. The investment strengthens Outokumpu’s focus on efficient, lower-emission stainless steel production for infrastructure, mobility and household appliance applications.
