SMS Group has completed the upgrade of Mukand Ltd.’s existing two-strand SMS Concast bloom caster at its Kalwa facility in Thane, Maharashtra. The modernization introduces a new 250 x 300 mm bloom section, helping Mukand expand its product range and strengthen production of stainless steel rebar and wire rods.

The upgraded bloom caster is expected to improve throughput, reduce maintenance-related downtime, and deliver better dimensional accuracy with consistent product quality. The caster, originally commissioned in 1984, has been part of Mukand’s steelmaking operations for over four decades. This upgrade marks an important step in enhancing efficiency and supporting India’s specialty steel manufacturing capabilities.
