waterThe Dampier desalination project in the Pilbara will receive 22 per cent of the Western Australia’s $2.7 billion allocation for water projects in its 2026–27 Budget.
A $606 million injection will help double the plant’s capacity to eight gigalitres (GL) per year, with construction having commenced on both Stage 1 (4GL) and Stage 2 (4GL) of the project.
The Pilbara package also includes $11.8 million to upgrade the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme and $23.8 million to investigate future supply options for Port Hedland’s Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area.
It forms part of a broader $6.4 billion capital works program planned across Water Corporation, Aqwest – Bunbury Water and Busselton Water over the next four years.
A further $64.1 million will be directed towards existing and future water sources for the Integrated Water Supply Scheme, which provides drinking water to more than 2.5 million people.
The Budget also establishes a $52.9 million Regional Water Source Fund to support planning and investment in regional water supplies, alongside $9.4 million for priority drainage bridge works in the south west.
An additional $166.7 million over two years has been allocated for maintenance across the state’s water network to reduce leaks and bursts.
“Western Australia is undergoing a significant water transition as the climate continues to dry, and as outlined in our Made Possible by Water document, the Cook Labor Government’s sustained investments in desalination, recycling and groundwater replenishment are ensuring the state remains ahead of emerging pressures,” WA Water Minister Don Punch said.
“By investing in new water sources, desalination, and essential maintenance across WA, we’re future‑proofing our state by supporting workers, protecting communities and ensuring water security in a changing climate.”
