Filtration + Separation
The units will be integrated into so-called Sun Wagons – solar-powered, mobile trailers designed to supply both water and energy in areas with damaged or non-existent infrastructure. The Sun Wagon concept has been developed through collaboration between several Danish companies, with Grundfos delivering the water treatment solution.
The project is managed by DanChurchAid and financed by the AP Møller Relief Foundation. The Sun Wagons are currently being tested in Mykolaiv, Ukraine.
The water treatment units have been engineered to operate under highly variable and uncertain conditions, where the quality and composition of untreated water sources cannot be guaranteed. According to Oleksandr Sadchykov, responsible for sales and service in Northern and Central Europe at Water Treatment Europe, flexibility was a key design requirement.
“In war-affected areas, the composition of untreated water is unknown. That’s why we have designed and built a solution that can deliver drinking water quality no matter which water source is available,” he explains.
To ensure rapid deployment, the units are mounted on frames that allow easy installation within the Sun Wagon trailers. The trailers are equipped with foldable solar panels, enabling straightforward transport and fast setup in the field.
Each Sun Wagon is capable of producing up to 20,000 kWh of renewable energy and treating up to 33,600 litres of water per day, helping to meet essential needs in emergency and recovery situations.
“This project is very special for us – and especially for me – because I am from Ukraine. It makes me proud and happy that we at Grundfos can support my fellow Ukrainians in the challenges they are facing right now,” says Sadchykov.
