Northumbrian Water made the award without going out to tender on the basis that the complexities of the project, including a challenging site footprint, meant that the Nereda solution was the only treatment solution suitable. Haskoning own the intellectual property (IP), software, and process patents meaning they are the only ones who can provide the controller software (Aquasuite), deliver the process design validation, and the core internals of the solution. There are no alternative suppliers able to provide the same process technology.

The project is required at Brasside to upgrade the Sewage Pumping Station and Sewage Treatment Works in order to increase storage and treatment capacity alongside process improvements.

Earliest date the contract will be signed is 1 August 2026 and estimated start and end contract dates are 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2028, with a further possible extension to 31 July 2030.

Northumbrian Water will use framework partners to procure the civil and construction elements.

Northumbrian Water said additional contracts may be awarded directly to Haskoning for any ongoing support, modifications, and any additional projects requiring Nereda technology where no other suitable option is available or suitable.

The technology elements relate to process design, control philosophy, and performance optimisation. There is no alternative to that element of the solution. In addition, future modifications or upgrades to the core process are likely to require input from Haskoning to maintain performance compliance and protect the integrity of the system.
