LG used its AHR Expo press breakfast fireside chat to outline key trends shaping the HVAC market in 2026, pointing to rising energy-efficiency demand, an expected retrofit boom tied to the refrigerant transition, and growing commercial opportunities in sectors such as data centers.

The discussion featured LG executives Steve Scarbrough, Doug Bougher, and Mark Ardire, moderated by Terry Frisenda and Phillip Kriegbaum, and served as a preview of LG’s new commercial and residential technologies launching this year.

LG noted that energy-efficient HVAC systems continue gaining traction as building owners seek stronger ROI, with HVAC accounting for nearly 40% of building energy use. Executives also pointed to the phase-down of R-410A and the adoption of A2L refrigerants as major drivers of retrofit activity heading into 2026.

Unitary and ductless solutions also remain a priority. LG introduced its new Multi-Position Gas Furnace, designed for commercial applications and dual-fuel system integration. Models will feature 96% and 80% AFUE ratings, supporting energy-efficient performance across a wider range of projects.

LG is also launching a new high-efficiency heat pump rooftop unit lineup, beginning with 7.5-, 10-, and 12.5-ton RT models, built to simplify replacement and installation work for contractors.

A major theme of the fireside chat was the evolving commercial landscape, particularly the explosive growth of data centers and AI-driven infrastructure requiring resilient cooling capacity.

LG leaders emphasized that advanced chiller technology will play a growing role in supporting these specialized environments, where heat loads are intense and uptime is critical.

Among the technologies highlighted:

LG Inverter Scroll Heat Pump Chiller, available in 20-, 30-, 40-, and 60-ton capacities for both comfort and process applications

LG Inverter Screw Chiller, designed for stable chilled water operation with lower refrigerant charge, microchannel condenser performance, and optional free cooling modes

The recently launched Multi V i VRF Solution, an all-electric VRF platform powered by on-device AI and low-GWP R-32 refrigerant for intelligent climate control across diverse commercial buildings

LG positioned these solutions as part of a broader push toward scalable, high-efficiency systems capable of meeting next-generation building demands.

Beyond technology, LG executives stressed that workforce readiness will be one of the most decisive factors in whether contractors can capitalize on coming demand.

As HVAC systems increasingly integrate smart controls and AI-driven optimization, technicians will need new competencies in diagnostics, connected platforms, and advanced installation practices.

Employment projections underscore the urgency: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates HVAC installer employment could reach nearly 460,000 jobs by 2034.

LG highlighted its investments in contractor education through multiple training academies focused on ductless, VRF, and controls systems. Current locations include:

Dallas;

Orange County, California;

Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey;

Alpharetta, Georgia; and

Chicago (coming soon).

Company leaders emphasized that recruitment, retention, and continuous development should be viewed not simply as operational needs, but as strategic investments necessary for long-term competitiveness.

Artificial intelligence was another recurring theme, with LG pointing to AI’s growing role in predictive maintenance, energy management, and real-time system optimization.

AI-enabled HVAC platforms can analyze operating data to detect issues before failures occur, reduce unexpected downtime, and extend equipment lifespan. At the contractor level, intelligent systems may also help streamline workforce challenges — from training support to KPI monitoring and service efficiency.

However, panelists acknowledged that integrating AI into legacy infrastructure presents hurdles, including platform compatibility, data security, and technician upskilling.

Looking ahead, LG positioned 2026 as a pivotal year for contractors and manufacturers navigating regulatory change, technology advancement, and new growth sectors across the HVAC industry.
