The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is using National Apprentice Week to highlight the urgent need for more apprentice training, warning that workforce shortages are limiting Australia’s ability to meet housing demand. Shortages in critical residential construction roles, particularly carpentry, are continuing to restrict building capacity nationwide. ADVERTISEMENT “Workforce shortages remain one of the biggest constraints on increasing home building activity, with the nation needing an estimated 83,000 additional skilled workers across our key trades,” HIA executive director, future workforce Mike Hermon says. “Builders across the country are telling us the same thing, demand for housing is there, but access to skilled labour is holding projects back.” Recent survey data from HIA’s small business members reinforces the scale of the challenge. It indicated that the cost and access to skilled trades were both in the top five issues, placing pressure on builders. The survey also showe

Telecommunications services are a lifeline during emergencies, supporting mobile networks, internet access, financial transactions and the rapid dissemination of critical information from authorities. As recovery efforts begin in areas affected by floods or fires, there is a real risk of unscrupulous operators presenting themselves as cablers, particularly for home and small business installations. ADVERTISEMENT Telecommunications sparkies are required by law to be registered and to provide compliance certificates to clients after completing work. When visiting a client, make sure to show your registration and explain that it’s a legal requirement, helping them understand its importance for any future work. Using unqualified or unregistered sparkies can lead to unreliable services, potential safety hazards, future faults and legal consequences, so be aware for next time. CITT chief executive and TITAB Australia head of the ACMA-accredited cabler registry Dominic Schipano, has repeatedl

T&D World2 min readTuning in for the halftime show at Super Bowl LX, I was not expecting to see transformer explosions become part of the pyrotechnics, but a set piece during a performance by Puerto Rican recording artist Bad Bunny appeared to reference the island territory’s chronic power grid problems. As part of the show, dancers performing with Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known by the stage name Bad Bunny, dangled in mock line worker gear from four distribution lines, which sparked and appeared to “explode” with stage pyrotechnics during a musical crescendo. This part of the halftime show coincided with a song of Bad Bunny’s titled “El Apagón,” or “the power outage.” During this part of the show, the lights of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, dimmed temporarily. Customers in Puerto Rico experience about 27 hours of outage every year – and this is in a good year, with no hurricanes. This compares with two hours of outage for the mainland US, according to the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s

New Freedom of Information (FOI) data suggests NHS Trusts across England are stepping up investment in solar, energy efficiency and digital energy management, but a significant minority still lacks clear plans or consistent measurement to stay on track for net zero. The research, released by Schneider Electric, is based on FOI responses from 66 NHS Trusts in England. It finds that 21% of Trusts do not have a clear roadmap to meet NHS net zero targets – an improvement from 31% in 2024, but still a substantial gap for an estate facing rising energy costs and growing pressure to decarbonise. A similar proportion of Trusts (21%) said they are not measuring their carbon footprint, down from 29% in 2024. Schneider Electric also reported that 26% of Trusts remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels, with 90% of their energy coming from these sources. There are some bright spots, however. Nearly two thirds (64%) of Trusts reported adopting technology to monitor and optimise energy use, up from 4

T&D World3 min readFirstEnergy Pennsylvania Electric Company (FE PA), a FirstEnergy company, has filed a new Default Service Plan (DSP) with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PaPUC). The plan explains the role of FE PA to buy electricity beginning June 1, 2027, for customers who do not select an alternate supplier and adds new protections to help ensure customers do not overpay for electricity. Electricity generation supply makes up approximately 60% of a typical customer's bill in Pennsylvania, thus power purchasing methods are crucial in keeping overall costs manageable. "This plan introduces new safeguards to reduce the risk of unexpected rates and give customers greater clarity and stability,” said John Hawkins, President, FirstEnergy Pennsylvania. FE PA is expected to buy electricity on behalf of customers who do not choose an alternate supplier as it does not own any power plants. Under the new plan, FE PA will continue using a competitive auction to purchase the electricity at the lowest

T&D World2 min readTerna ’s planned removal of electricity poles in the municipality of Florence has begun with the demolition of a pylon in an area near the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital, as part of an initiation of a three-week initial stage of work to remove around 2 km of overhead power lines and a total of seven pylons. The effort is part of the broader plan to rationalize and modernize the electricity grid in Florence. The company plans to invest more than $53.05 million in the project, which will guarantee greater security, efficiency, and sustainability for the local electricity grid. At the end of the first cycle of demolitions, Terna has planned three further rationalization interventions to run from early 2026, involving the municipalities of Scandicci and Impruneta as well as the municipality of Florence. The second stage will help destroy another 12 km of overhead power lines and 61 pylons. At the end of the entire schedule of demolitions, of 14 km of overhead power lines and 68 pylons it wil

T&D World3 min readThe leaders of Xcel Energy Inc. expect to sign contracts with data-center operators for a total of 6 gigawatts of capacity between now and the end of next year. That figure is double their most recent estimate, which they gave last month. Speaking to analysts on Feb. 5 after Minneapolis-based Xcel reported fourth-quarter earnings of $567 million (up from $464 million in late 2024) on total revenues of nearly $3.6 billion, CFO Brian Van Abel said the company’s teams are working on “some really good opportunities” across Xcel’s eight-state footprint. But, he added, the geographic focus in the near term is likely to be on the Upper Midwest, where Xcel operates Northern States Power Co.-Minnesota and Northern States Power Co.-Wisconsin. “We expect to have these contracts signed by the end of 2027,” Van Abel said. “The construction cycle, a lot of those may come in kind of that ’29-type period. And then it’s really about energizing in 2030 and the early 2030s and about extending our capital

T&D World6 min readTransmission and distribution event DTECH kicked off this year in San Diego with the first keynote session on Monday evening of Feb. 2, featuring a welcome from Stephanie Kolodziej, Group Vice President, Energy, Clarion Events, and a lineup of utility executive remarks. Itron President and CEO Tom Dietrich served as the host for Scott Crider, SDG&E president; Mike Delaney, vice president of strategy and innovation at PG&E; and Richard Donaldson, senior vice president and chief information officer at Duke Energy. National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has partnered with Space Solar to investigate the potential of distributing electricity without wires, as part of a new innovation project examining whether wireless transmission could support the electricity network in the UK. The Wireless Power Transmission project will explore whether ground-based wireless technology could supplement overhead lines and underground cables, and whether it could play a role in improving network resilience and speeding up grid connections. NGED said the project will assess possible use cases including emergency response situations, such as storms, and improving service for customers in remote areas. It will also consider whether wireless transmission could help move energy from offshore renewables, and whether it could offer an alternative approach to power transfer in National Landscapes. The work comes as electricity demand is expected to rise significantly over the coming decades, with estimates suggestin

Following its recognition as Best Active Fire Safety Product at the Intersec Awards 2026, Hochiki Europe’s ACD multi sensor with CO is gaining momentum across the fire safety sector. The award-winning device is being adopted in live environments where accurate early detection, reduced false alarms and operational resilience are essential. The ACD multi sensor with CO combines smoke, heat and carbon monoxide sensing within a single intelligent detector. By assessing multiple indicators of combustion, it can provide faster, more reliable detection than traditional single- or dual-technology devices, while minimising unwanted activations caused by non-threatening conditions. This capability is increasingly important as buildings become more complex in design and use, with spaces that vary widely in layout and occupancy patterns. Built for flexibility, the sensor offers 24 EN-approved configurable operating modes, allowing system designers to tailor detection behaviour to specific risk pro

IONITY has opened a new high-power EV charging hub in Birmingham, which it describes as its most urban UK location to date. The site, on the A4540 in Aston, provides 12 ultra-rapid chargers offering up to 400 kW – and it’s all powered using renewable energy, ensuring a clean charging experience. While there aren’t many EVs that can top out at 400 kW, with just the Lotus Emeya and BMW iX3 capable of such feats, it theoretically means that those vehicles can charge from 10 to 80% in around 15 minutes. In real world conditions, especially in the cold winter, it’s unlikely that many will actually enjoy those speeds – but it should still be a welcome option for those looking for a rapid charger. That’s especially important as rapid chargers aren’t always selected for city centre locations. Instead, you’ll more commonly find destination chargers in urban locations, with rapid chargers typically selected for sites such as motorway service stations. So, why did IONITY choose to install its lat

T&D World2 min readWhen Winter Storm Fern knocked out power and caused damage throughout the Southwest, the Mid-Atlantic, and into the Northeast, line crews packed their bags, stocked their trucks, and hit the road. According to the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), more than 65,000 mutual assistance workers from 44 states responded to the storm. As of Jan. 31, EEI reported that power had been restored to more than 865,000 customers through around-the-clock restoration efforts. "Industry crews continue working through challenging conditions to restore power safely and as quickly as possible to every customer who is able to receive it," said EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney. "The massive mutual assistance mobilization, strong cross-industry coordination, and industry-government partnership have enabled this effective response, as have our companies' grid strengthening investments." Challenges, however, still remain. For example, lineworkers faced dangerously cold temperatures, treacherous roads and falli

T&D World4 min readAmid a genuine energy affordability crisis, U.S. utilities appear largely committed to business as usual. Consumer electric bills are rising faster than inflation during a period of widespread economic uncertainty , and energy costs were a ballot issue in last fall’s gubernatorial races. Meanwhile, surging demands for power and a more resilient grid are pushing the system toward expensive overbuild, with utilities seeking $31 billion in rate hikes in the past 12 months. Utilities should draw on decades of pilot programs on demand flexibility and grid enhancing technologies to help solve the affordability crisis. If they do, they’ll earn well-deserved credit — and if not, they will most certainly deserve the blame. Utilities are vital to scaling the AI industry, whose electricity needs are driving the sharp increase in U.S. demand forecasts. Governors want the expanded tax base that comes with data centers, but only if ratepayers are shielded from unnecessary spending. Similarly, the fe
