Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted
conditional approval
to
Sembcorp Utilities
, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore's Sembcorp, and the Malaysian energy company
Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB)
to
import approximately
1 GW of renewable energy
from Sarawak (Malaysia) to Singapore (Sembcorp's press release, 17/10/2025).
SP PowerInterconnect
will support the project as a technical partner.
The electricity will be transmitted via
over 700 km of subsea cables
, marking
Singapore’s first large-scale, round-the-clock renewable power import project
, capable of delivering
baseload renewable energy
to the country. “Together with an earlier Conditional Approval to bring in 1.2 GW of renewable electricity from Vietnam, this brings us closer to achieving 2.2 GW of imports, contributing to Singapore’s
6 GW target by 2035
and advancing the development of a regional power grid”, said the Group Chief Executive Officer of
Sembcorp Industries
.
In addition, the consortium has signed a
preferred supplier agreement
with
Prysmian
, a leader in high-voltage submarine and underground cable systems. Final regulatory approvals and subsea cable installation are still pending. The project is expected to
commence operations
around 2035
, with the imported electricity sourced predominantly from
hydropower
in Sarawak.
