Statkraft Applies For Licence For New Mår Hydropower Plant In Rjukan

Statkraft has submitted a licence application to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate for a new Mår power plant in Rjukan, boosting generation by just over 13% as part of its NOK 70 billion Norwegian hydropower upgrade plan.

Mår power plant was commissioned in 1948 and is approaching the end of its operational lifetime. Statkraft has concluded that the best utilisation of resources would be to build a new power plant approximately 1000 metres further into the mountain, and relocate the intake to the Kalhovd reservoir and the outlet to Tinnsjøen. This will increase the height of fall and enable more electricity to be produced more quickly during periods of high demand, helping to reduce price peaks.

(Oslo, 15 April 2026) Statkraft plans to invest up to NOK 67 billion in hydropower and wind power in Norway in the coming years. First in line for repowering of our existing wind farms is Hitra, where Statkraft is now applying for a licence for an updated version of the wind farm originally commissioned in 2004. In parallel with the licence application, a zoning plan proposal has been submitted to the municipality of Hitra.

The agreements provide a solid and predictable energy foundation for the smelter and help maintain both production and further development at the site.
