Zambia: The government of Zambia has introduced an updated Rural Electrification Master Plan (REMP) aimed at delivering electricity access to all citizens by 2030. The plan was launched by Energy Minister Makozo Chikote at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
The revised plan sets out a clear path to expand power access, particularly in rural areas. It is expected to improve daily life, support small businesses, and strengthen services such as education and healthcare. The initiative also supports the country’s long-term development goals under Vision 2030, while aligning with global efforts to provide affordable and modern energy.
A key feature of the updated strategy is a move away from fragmented and poorly coordinated electrification projects. In the past, efforts were often carried out separately, leading to inefficiencies. The new approach focuses on better planning, coordination, and resource use to ensure long-term sustainability.
However, the government has highlighted the need for strong financial backing. Around $1.52 B will be required to fully implement the plan. To meet this goal, authorities are encouraging partnerships between public bodies, private investors, and international organisations to provide both funding and expertise.
Efforts are also being made to improve policies and regulations to attract more investment into the energy sector. Officials describe the plan as “bankable”, offering clear and reliable opportunities for investors.
The Rural Electrification Authority will prioritise “last mile” connections to reach remote communities. A digital platform, expected by 2026, will allow the public to track progress and monitor projects in real time.
